anyone who believes that colms "inside" at 02:07 isnt amazing may has well put on a big inspectors hat and hunt him accross the years while swearing to the stars
@randalisbitch yeah i love how much colms is different to the others, he isn't the best of them but all of them just sound everything in, colm breaks it up more which i think shows the phantoms anger more and it has nothing to do with him being unable to sound notes in, just listen to him singing bring him home and how he sounds all that in and is able to hold notes for a very long time
I CAN'T stand hugh's acting both vocal and physical he just ANNOYS me soooo much same with colm and Peter Kerrie ..... Shame Earl got the lines mixed up ... He's usually decent during this section ...... And where is John cudia? Seriously .... He Gary Joj and ramin are my top favorites
JOJ is amazing. He'll always be the best, and I'm only about 30% sure that's actually Ramin. Ramin is usually more... yelly. He really likes to yell, but in a good way. lol. And Michael has a great voice, but for me, he just isn't expressive enough somehow. Sorry Crawford fans, he's amazing, but the new ones just keep improving what he started.
@Monkeyballmania Did you really just say that? You do realize that this guy is one of the most accomplished theater vocalists of our age? And you also realize that was recorded with early 90's equipment?
i'm sorry, no one can compare to Michael Crawford's voice, he IS the Phantom. he's got a nice hiss to his voice, and he doesn't over do it. my next runner up is Ramin, his voice sounds so powerful.
@tommyt4321 I agree with you so much. Wilkinson has potential but his inability to sustain music that is supposed to be legato or bound kills me. He's ruined both Phantom and Valjean for me on several occasions.
seeing as tis scene needs to be a powerful scene, Michael's voice doesn't suit it at all. I dont have any fear when i hear him, but ramin, gary and joj on the other hand are fantastic!
I'm not a huge fan of Michael Crawford, but I have to say his rendition of this is outstanding. I'm sorry to say this, too, but Gerard Butler kicks the crap out of the rest of these guys with his, "I am there inside"
In my opinion, Howard did the best at portraying what the moment is truly supposed to sound like. An epic and frightening moment for christine. he sounds actually perturbed to the point of anger. And Colm, what else can i say other than learn how to sustain a damn note. "I am there... inside" that is supposed to be sustained damn it. expression is one thing, but you wouldnt change a mozart opera just because of creative expression.
Ramin is my favorite Phantom ever. I love his voice, I think it's perfect. So he's obviously my number 1. My 2nd favorite would also be John Cudia, but since he's not on this list, it'd have to be JOJ.
I liked Crawford and JOJ and Panero and Lockyer did great i thought :) i liked Peter Karrie's emotion but id have to say Hugh McGillan is my favorite.
UGHHHH But I also hear Leila *shudder* I Love me some JoJ. I think him and Ramin have to be tied in second place for me, where Colm is my first. (I've always loved Colm as the phantom!!) I HATE EARL CARPENTER UGHHHHH.
Michael Crawford all the way. He has always been the best. There is no comparison to his artistry as the Phantom. He is the epitome of the role. How can anyone top the greatest portrayal.
Michael is the Gold Standard for this role. The rest are all good in their own way. With such talent available, it was so wrong to put a garage-band "vocalist" like Gerard Butler in the movie. Put his interpretation on the list and we have a worst Phantom.
My fav phantoms are 1micheal crawford 2john owen jones 3ramin krimloo 4david shanonn London ones best i mean no offence by saying this just my preference
I like Gary and Beth together better. they're like the best pair. I love him. but gary mauer is not the best phantom. that would be 1. MICHAEL CRAWFORD 2. Gary Mauer 3. John Cudia 4. John-Owen Jones 5. Ramin Karimloo. you have too agree, maybe not their placings but they are the top 5 best!
@stitchgrl777 I couldn't agree more. No one's voice booms quite like Hugh's. I distinctly remember seeing him on broadway and his entrance literally made me jump back in my seat with chills! I love Howard's rendition also (and most all of these amazing actors, to be honest), but if I had to pick one phantom for this particular scene, it'd be Hugh :)
You're missing Thomas James O'Leary from bway's POTO in 1998. I can post that, and it will def be the best freaken "Insolent Boy" you've ever heard in your entire life.
Michael was and shall remain the best, with JOJ close behind. After that... Hugh? Yes, I think so. I also quite liked Peter Karrie's "I am there inside!"
I'm disappointed John Cudia isn't here though, he's wonderful. And I'm not too crazy about Colm Wilkinson o_O
Love Colm in general but not his Phantom....I also ffeel that Gary is very good but he has some poor recordings out there of him.
I just have to say John because his voice is like....like life has passed away and all that's left is me and the end of the universe swimming in his notes...He's just too sexy <3
Michael Crawford definately! His voice really is heavenly (and yet seductive like people say).Second place,I say Howard McGillan (whom showed a more angrier like Phantom.)I saw him on April 15 and he was amazing, but not as amazing as Michael!

I would put Michael Crawford at #1 because he totally seduces you with every word. After that probably JOJ and #3 I'm still trying to make up my mind(maybe Earl Carpenter). Least favorites, because I just feel like there to stiff, can't understand them or not mysterious enough, would be Colm, Ramin, Gary, Howard and Peter Karrie. I feel like those guys would make me flee where with Michael I would be seduced by his voice and want to know where it was coming from and feel a hypnotic pull to it.
Michael Crawford - hands down! The music just rolls off his tongue and he has such emotion with every word. Just perfect.

Howard Mcgillin's voice is incredibly rich in person, this recording does not do him justice. 1. I guess Michael Crawford cuz he is the bar you set to compare other phantoms.
2.Howard McGillin.. but listen to him in Swan Princess 3 Because I love her and you'll be like woah!
3.JOJ and Ramin Karimloo.. very similar, but very good
But Peter Lockyer is the best singer and he is in my top 4, I just can't place him!

My top 5 out of these:
JOJ: He's probably the best Phantom I have ever heard. I used to think Ramin was the best until I heard John. 10/10
Ramin: He sounds like a younger John Owen Jones. 10/10
Michael Crawford: He's definitely not as good JOJ, but he does sound pretty good. He also get's points for being the original Phantom. 8/10
Peter Lockyer: This was my first time hearing him. He was pretty good. 7/10
Colm Wilkinson: He's pretty good, but his accent's too thick. Stick to Les Mis. 6/10
