I do think the family overreacted to her a bit in this scene, but when you already have predetermined negative feelings towards someone, one little think can set you off. This was the case with her. They thought she was uptight and rigid to begin with.
@nickcarterroxs Hi there. Im from Chile, so my english is far from perfect. Could you please explain me this line? I've just seen the movie and I get lost in this particular line. I know it's irrelevant, but I would like to get it. I can tell they are jocking to each other, but in which way? "Can you dig it" part specially... thanks
For most of the movie, I did feel that the family were being way too hard on her, but this was the one scene where I was on their side. Maybe she really didn't mean to come off that way and couldn't articulate her opinion better, but the "normal child" comment was out of line.
I think the family was so upset not really because Meridith asked the question but because she couldn't take the social cues or even outright statements that they didn't want to talk about it. I also think that Thad wouldn't have cared what Meridith thought of him - he seemed upset because he probably wondered if his family really thought he was normal or if they were just being nice.
I thought this scene was so good at showing how the words of others could misunderstood depending on how you got along with a person. Meredith (Parker) simply says " I don't understand why you would want your child to face all the prejudice in the world as a homosexual. Why would you wish that upon your child?" Which is true. Why would you? But because they don't like her they instantly jump down her throat and IGNORE her exact point and just hear the insults. :/
And what if she has said: "you should never wish for a black child, because there is a lot of racism". It's the same thing she says. I do think she went too far and was just ignorant. Great scene btw.
What a delightful peice of shit. The scene that really ruined the movie for me. i'm so glad they posted this scene. This really shows just how judgemental and nasty the characters here.
I've asked a lot of gay friends about this scene and they said they never felt offended, but they DID feel like the Stone's were baiting Meredith on purpose just to tell her off.

There are certain subjects that are off limits when meeting the in-laws. This is a perfect example of why.
