This is one of my favorites on the album. I know The Rip Tide is departing from the foreign influences, and I think this song is the one that best captures the spirit of old Beirut without relying on a specific style besides "American indie pop"
Do you know that feeling where you know that you're experiencing something amazing and totally different from what everyone else can see? ...yeah, that's what this band is for me.
@sukini3 , @hulagir93 Don't get me wrong, Beirut are bloody awesome, and there is nobody else producing music quite like this, but there are other great musicians out there for whom comparisons with Beirut's talent aren't exactly outlandish. Think of Chopin, Andrew Bird, James Vincent McMorrow, Ammoncontact, Nick Drake, Sufjan Stevens, Joanna Newsom, Four Tet, Atmosphere...
I'm not saying loving these songs is in any way wrong; just keep your mind and ears open.
@InsomniacGoose This is all opinion so don't get too wigged out. Some people may think Beirut's talent compared to those artists you, quite personally, like is indeed "outlandish". It's hypocritical to criticize someone who's saying their opinion when it's all opinion and you're most certainly stating yours.
@arthenis1 I think you're confusing the critique of the person's statement with personal criticism. It's hardly hypocritical to bring another person's method (or "opinion" as you say) into question as long as it remains a critique of that alone and not their personal life (a.k.a ad hominem).
Why would people put their opinions on a public forum if they have no intention of receiving a reply? There seems to be no reason why posts shouldn't include thoughtful critique.
@InsomniacGoose Keep in mind that while Beirut is a band, all the music is written by Zach Condon, the lead singer. If cloning were a possibility he could play every instrument himself. Andrew Bird, Nick Dranke, etc. are all good musicians; however, they are not as overall diverse as Zach, which is why I think he is the "most talented" musician of our generation. Also keep in mind hes only 25 and been doing this since he was 16.
@agnosticzebra Check out Roy Wood's album Boulders, where he DOES pretty much play every instrument himself, and he wrote it all as well. Writing all the music yourself, for a band, is nothing that unique (well more so now in this generation, but still). He makes great music, but it's not hard to find comparable talent.
Portus Cale (Latin for Port of Cale) was the old name of an ancient town and port in current day Portugal. And Portugal is named after it, the ancient name of Porto.
it is almost comical when my friends ever try to compare his art to ANYONE ELSES I don't understand how they could ever believe I would ever agree that anyone could be better...have they heard these songs?
This is how love feels.. Oh.

@InsomniacGoose fair fair i did get a little carried away i see your point but it is different to a point where comparison is difficult.
