@DonBringer That exhaust plume consists of water vapor and dirt kicked up by the thrust. That's it. The most environmentally harmful thing the shuttle produces is noise. Furthermore, NASA's contributions to the study of the Earth and it's climate are so great, greater than any other single agency in the world, that it more than compensates for the relatively small amount pollution they might create, so show some fucking respect.
@ProgHead777 exactly, cows farting creates more global climate problems then nasa, and cows are good for nothing, they could be replaced for any other form of meat with no problem, but nasa, they are doing some of the most important things humanity has ever done
@101andrewj Well cows don't cause a climate problem it is humans who demand cows that cause that problem. Search and check out the movie on youtube called
"Earthlings - Full length documentary (multi-subtitles)"
@sohcsarewicked humans demand crack cocaine too, but the government doesnt allow it... why not do the same with beef... do you know the environmental problems industrial cattle farming in the USA is causing.
@101andrewj Did you watch the movie I quoted? Please check it out and post back. That would never happen with beef when 1/2 your usa politician have some type of ties to ranching. That is why in usa you are inhumanely killing off wild horses to populate their land with cattle and there are no cruelty laws when it comes to the sport of rodeo. Did you know 35 animals died in ONE rodeo event (horses/bulls/calves) but you wouldn't hear it on the news because gov is in the pocket of ranchers.
@Textrybal You are right. I was mistaken. Still, it's not as bad as it looks. The exhaust is quite corrosive and you wouldn't want to go breathing in lungfuls of it but if you look at the apparently healthy condition of the plants and wildlife around the launch pad, it's not exactly agent orange, either. The bulk of the plume seen during an actual shuttle launch is water vapor, though.
Your comments about water vapor exhaust are valid but only for liquid rocket motors.... The motor used in this test is a solid rocket motor (ammonium perchlorate).... Also the exhaust you talk of from the shuttle launch is coming from the burning solid motors... Other than the flame, the exhaust from liquid motors is not visible.
Yes, the exhaust from solid motors is bad for the air however it still does not compare to what 100 cars put out in a month so who gives a shit
@TheKazable Why would the exhaust gasses from the rockets be bad for the air? My guess is that the amm.perchlorate will decompose into water, oxygen?, ammonia and hydrochloric acid, The last 2 will combine to from ammoniumchloride which will go into the soil/ocean where the ammonium will be beneficial for plants and the chloride will combine with iron oxide (rust) to form ferrichloride, which is stable.
@TheKazable Technically, water vapor exhaust is only from liquid LOX/LH2 rockets. There are other kinds of liquid rockets, RP-1/LOX, LOX/Alcohol, MMH/N204 just to name a few. RP-1/LOX would put out same as cars, RP-1 is basically just kerosene. But not nearly as much as a few Semis would over the course of a month.
@Neutrinoghost well in theory this test already changed the rotational period of earth. But if you wanted to notice the change (say, make the day a few minutes longer/shorter) you would need literally millions if not billions of these things. Think about the forces of volcanoes, or add up all the wind resistance of mountains or skyscrapers or the sloshing of tides... these forces are many millions of times greater than anything man has been capable of making so far.
Good point. I always wondered about the effects that humans could have on the Earths orbital and rotational motion. All the Nukes that were tested, and the rocket tests, all the bombs drops in war, I know volcanoes and meteor impact are much more powerful, but I wondered if we could make a tiny difference that would become noticable over time.
just the sound makes me respect the power this thing has.
