  • aaaaand controller WOAHP!

  • WOW! is like you get to play the games on a CD!!!

  • best review so far!

  • @KokoroNoSama Hey thanks for that!

  • @MegaWhackManV One of them may work, pretty sure the Genny 1 adapter works technically and often on Ebay that is the adapter a CDX might come with BUT I DO NOT RECOMMEND IT! It may run it but it is NOT the proper spec, there is a reason the rating is different, prolong use may risk damage to the CDX so much better to get the proper CDX adapter OR compatible power adapter. Often people will say "OH I RUN IT JUST FINE WITH XXX XXX ADAPTER" well that is ignorance and can result in later damage.

  • @MaximumRD So, just to drive the point home, a "SEGA" adapter is not necessarily the "right" adapter.

  • is the intro from xenon 2?

  • @Thomasgraversen Yes it is a remixed version b Gibbs from XenonII Megablast.

  • @MaximumRD it's very good! ive played alot of that game on the master system :)

  • Oh god, not one of those big box plugs!

  • How did you ever get that to look so good on an HDTV-or is that an HDTV??

  • @dave4shmups I am not sure of the specifics, it was where I worked over night and I noticed it had composite inputs.

  • Cool review

  • The system's box touted its "portable CD player" capability... like HELL I'd use my CDX as a portable CD player!

  • @DrLove0378 Yeah even back in the day I would not have considered that lol.

  • ur such as dork lol godd video tho

  • Nice job on the video! I like how you went into detail on the system before actually playing it. This video answered all my questions about this system. Now, off to find/buy one.

  • I prefer form of CDX. Very just suitable size.

  • final fight CD music is simpy awesome!

  • A 32X does work with it. I had a CDX with a 32X in the past.

  • @mclockwork777 I know I mentioned it in one of my comments.

  • Comment removed

  • @haxor758 Er...... I agree but I think you just replied to the wrong person?

  • @MaximumRD naw man you cool lol i did reply to wrong guy :/

  • hey Bud do u know what a D-skin is? I d-skin is a piece of plastic that protects your cds, video games and ,usic cd's and dvd's. if u ask me if a D-skin works on a sega CD it does, i've tested it on my sega cd's Kolerik

  • @KolerikRocks Yep I remember them but I never felt compelled to buy them.

  • Maximum how scratched r your Sega cd's, my r scratched that's y i'm using then, tell me Could i hook up a 32X to my model 1 sega genesis, and i have a model 2 sega cd system

  • @KolerikRocks I have backups for all my Sega CD's so it is not an issue but in general they are in pretty good shape. The 32x can hook up to a model 1 or 2 Genesis the trick is making sure you get a 32x with all the proper cables that originally came with it, the model 1 requires an extra peice as well as a extra cable that adapts the original 32x to fit the model 1. often on Ebay this extra cable is missing, see my video "Unboxing Super Mega SEGA goodness! Finally got it!" for details.

  • Awesome. I don't think I seen this video until now. Strange eh? I found it randomly while watching something else. Great I love the little CDX. I have the JVC XEYE but I would mind having one of these too!

  • backup eh'? =)

  • IVE BEEN ON THE HUNT FOR THIS SYSTEM FOR YEARS AND I CAME ACROSS ONE IN PRESTINE CONDITIONS FOR 120.00 BUCKS ON A GOING OUT OF BUSINESS STORE AND SHIT I LET IT GO CAUSE OF MY STUPID DAMN RENT MONEY. I WANT TWO, ONE FOR ME AND ONE FOR EXPERIMENTS. I WANNA MAKE IT PLAY DVDS AND SOMEHOW ATTACH A SCREEN TO IT.

  • @knightforce01 well a screen may be doable, making it play DVD? Well that I would like to see as it would require a completely new laser assembly and circuit board etc, you would have to basically recreate it from scratch. Good luck though I would love to be proven wrong..

  • @MaximumRD You sound like the guy from the apple ads. "...and I'm a PC"

Where did you get the rock version of megablast? love that tune.

  • @richardmaudsley77 It is a remix by the awesome GIBS. Search for user on here called gibs2b.

  • @MaximumRD Thanks man.

  • nice tv. How much are sega cdx's these days

  • @pdoddy12 Well unless your lucky enough to find at a lawn sale or thrift shop then who knows? Like most things on Ebay they are worth whatever someone is willing to pay, all these things depend on condition, what is included etc, right now a quick check on Ebay is a bare unit, no cords or plugs for $75, bad idea not to get with the original adapter, then there is a complete in box asking $300, it just depends.

  • you just mentioned james rolfe and peter griffin in one video.

    awesome! :D

  • the cdx becomes only handy if you have limmited room and use it as a porteble cd player.

now if a companny can design a color lcd screeen wich fit,s on it,it will bring justice to also play on the go.

  • i want one of those, can someone tell me where to get one cheap since i dont have enough money to buy it on ebay

  • @TheGeekplayer Not likely unless you are lucky enough to find at a thrift store or garage sale.

  • @MaximumRD ah well thanks anyways

  • My friend gave me one of these for washing his dishes...he got it for $10 at a rummage sale. Damn.

  • What's Noway?

  • @TheRaker55 What are you referring to exactly?

  • @MaximumRD When you sticked that game on top of the Sonic & Knuckles game.

  • @TheRaker55 Ah, I was reading what the screen said, NO WAY! just the message you get when you stick any cartridge on top that is not another SONIC cartridge.

    That is all.

  • could you play it on the batter's or not?

  • @coolguy2kill No, the batteries are not enough voltage to play the games, the batteries are basically to allow you to carry it around as a portable CD player AND NOTHING ELSE. This is probably just as well since it does not even last very long to play CD's I am sure outputting Audio/Video and processing games would kill the batteries really fast.

  • wow that is so cool. I own the 6 button IR Remote controllers for 2 players and a sega genesis model 2. have about 21 games for it. plan on getting a sega cd for it.

  • MF DOOM

  • I remember my cousin had this.I thought it was soo cool.Well anyway it ended up getting broke so he used the dc laser for his PS1 when it went out.

  • 9:32, Blue Sphere!!! It seems you know nothing about S&K.

Putting Sonic 2 on top allows you to play as Knuckles in Sonic 2.

Putting Sonic 3 on top allows you to play though Sonic 3 with Knuckles, allows you to play Sonic 3 and S&K as one contiguous game, unlocks 2 more save slots, and allows you to save when playing S&K levels.

Putting Sonic 1 on top allows you to play all of the special levels in S&K (and strangely sonic 3)

Putting anything else on allows you to play a few random special level

  • @I freely admitted to know nothing, I cannot be bothered to research these things to death, to busy with life. Thanks for all your info, it is appreciated!

  • @MaximumRD lol, You're quite welcome, I don't particularly blame you for not knowing much about this cart.

On a side note, the reason I left the "s" on the end of level at the end of my last comment was that I had just hit the character limit.

  • I need an AV cable for one of these

  • Save your money, you're gonna need to get the Aiwa Mega CD and the Pioneer LaserActive too.

  • i think you stick sonic the hedgehog 3 on top of sonic and knuckles to get the complete version and then you start off at angel island and after a couple levels you go to mushroom hill and you get to play as sonic knuckles and tails

  • Play a 32X for a llllllong time on the CDX system, and you will have problems. Don't do it to find out!

  • See now you have me curious lol!

  • I think that there are certain parts that are too close to each other with a CDX/32X combo that overheat or potentially cause damage. This isn't confirmed (I should have said that). It's basically just a possibility. There are a few SEGA CD games that used to play in my CDX since I used the 32X in it for a few years, now those discs won't play for some reason. Don't know if its related.

  • @MaximumRD He is right about the 32x messing up the CDX... ask me how I know. Sucks!

  • @nym56789 Interesting, well I will keep that in mind, IF I ever pick one up I will use only with my original Genesis. Thanks for the tip.

  • @MaximumRD Really? I know you have to use a spacer to connect the 32X to the CDX (different from the spacer used to connect 32X to Genesis Model 2) but I haven't heard of issues.

  • @TheUltraDude I am not claiming issues, other people seem to be......

  • best console ever made

  • @djdeivyh NEC turbo duo is the best console ever made. and don't you forget it.

  • i got my cdx for free from a friend in ca, he saw that i liked my nes system and at that time i was trying to buy a sega genesis. so he sent me it for free and i mailed him cookies lol. and because of this damn cdx i have about 60 games (selling around 20 of them) and i have 2 extra model 1 genesis systems

  • this console looks fantastic, gonna be surfin ebay now

  • This is how Sega genesis was and shoulda been! if they made more of theese instead of the separate 32x and cd systems it would done a whole lot better!

  • I used to have a CDX, but I sold it a few years ago. Sonic CD was a great game.

  • Surprisingly I found a Sega CDX for ten bucks at a flea market! Seriously!

One prob though is the AV Out cord which I lack. This is a strange one because it has that wierd pin combo which is unlike the standard S-Video cables you get.

Where on earth can I find those special AV Out Cords that fit for a Sega CDX? I doubt stores like Bes Buy sell them; I checked. Radio Shack maybe?

  • Excellent find! Congrats. Nope they are not standard AV or Svideo, specific to CDX, is Ebay an option? If not are you handy with re-wiring or splicing cables? You might find online the right pinout to make a cable, lastly maybe hit up specific Sega forums or a classic gaming forum like digital Press to post help to either buy/locate/make a cable............

  • have you tried ebay....I am not sure but you need a genesis 2 cable for this....please double check just in case

  • @shenloken2 I'm jealous of you man

  • @shenloken2 Genesis model 2 / 32X cables will work just fine.

  • @shenloken2 Did you get this sorted out? Any Genesis 2/3 AV cables will do

  • @c0ldb33r Yep I got proper cables thanks.

  • @shenloken2 There is a store at the glen burnie mall in maryland that has plenty of them.

  • @enslavedandcondemned A.) I don't live in Maryland and B.) How much do they charge for them?

  • @shenloken2 Wanna i replaced mine like 7 bucks I think and they are all over ebay as well.

  • @shenloken2 I think the one for a Genesis 2 will work. They sell "reproduction" cables on eBay -- make sure you get the one which has both the left and right audio cords. I don't know if there's any available with the S-video plug on it -- I just bought the composite cable.

  • @shenloken2 I got 1 and some1 offerd me 450$ XD

  • @shenloken2 try amazon

  • Porque los norteamericanos cuando hacen videos de consolas son tan bruscos y brutos para tratar la consola?

  • LOL! I take care and even clean and repair my consoles, this is a sturdy little system, and just for the record friend, I am CANADIAN not AMERICAN! Thanks.

  • If I seem a little rough on the console remember I am doing the best I can with one hand as I hold my camera with the other, I do it for my subscribers!

  • With one hand.....cant believe it. well done mate!!!

  • Is the 32X compatible?

  • Despite some rumors, YES it is compatible........

Just GOOGLE : 32X compatible cdx

You will find lots of proof.............

  • Splendid... I happen to have a 32X laying around somewhere. Finally the setup I have dreamed of :D

  • Yes The cdx is compatible

  • This thing sits on ebay all the time for $200 or more. Whats sad is no one will pay more than $40 when they throw it up with no reserve

  • I thought it ran at v. 2.51?

  • Nope, 9.5V DC adapter..............

  • I mean the bios.

  • v2.21 is what came up, maybe a later revision of the hardware?

  • I guess the earlier ones run v. 2.21

  • I just won one of these on ebay tonight. I'm super excited to get this bad boy. My Sega console collection is nearing completion slowly but surely!

Do you use this as your main Genesis/SCD?

  • I don't get much time to play in general so both this and my standard Genesis model 1 are packed away right now. I don't have any other sega cd though so this is definitely my main unit for both........

  • You gotta love favorite-ing your own videos, huh? =P

  • LOL! Honestly I was just curious to see if I could........

  • It would be even better, if you could rate your own videos. =P

Then I would rate a video I post 5 stars, and block the ratings, so it shows up everywhere as a 5* video. =P

  • I just won one of these but the seller didn't say if it came with the original power supply (MK-4122). Is it true that using other power supplies, like the one for Genesis 2/32x will damage the CDX? The original MK-4122 power supply is nearly impossible to find.

  • There is a thread on that at the Classic/gaming Digital press forums. Basicly other PSU will power it BUT it is not the same specification. It can in the long run cause an issue. Hopefully you got the right one BUT I got tired of trying to find the right one so I got this great alternative that works as well The Sima SUP-60 Universal AC Power Adapter 3.3V to 9.5V DC Output search on Ebay I got it very cheap and the last setting is exactly what you need. I feel better using this, hope that helps!

  • I have tried hydrogen peroxide to clean contacts. I would think that it's cheaper than CLR... It works really well for me. Nice vid!

  • dude sweet video!

  • Thanks!

  • hey bro I just got one of these and IM having some problems

  • What issues are you having?

  • cool video, ive just checked on ebay for one today(11th sept 2009) and it costs £200 / US $400 . Very expensive but collectable.

  • I want to make an RGB AV cable for a newer U.S. spec television. I'm aware of the SCART cable from europe, but it has a funky plug that has no place on a U.S. TV.

I have ordered the stereo Genesis 2 AV cable which has all the pins, as opposed the the standard, which only has two. Three of them are for RGB output. Would it be possible to tap into those pins and get a better video output?

  • That sounds awesome and good luck to you. Unfortunately I HAVE NO IDEA lol! I have no skill in such projects, but I suggest to you people that would, post your idea on Classic Gaming (Digital Press) forums or possible Ben Heck forums, Atariage (ALL KINDS OF EXPERTS THERE NOT JUST ATARI!) or Sega16DOTcom you are sure to find knowledgeable people..................

  • I love how they pushed the "portable CD player" aspect as a selling point. Like HELL I'm gonna take this thing on the go, where it can get lost or broken. It was $399 new, and is still very expensive in the secondhand market (mine cost over $100 used.)

  • Putting Sonic 3 and Sonic 2 into the Sonic and Knuckles game allows you to play as Knuckles in those games.

  • Cool.

  • I would only use this system with a 32x.

  • This machine is called the Multi-Mega in Europe.

None of these MD-MCD combo units (wondermega/x-eye) were released in Australia.

  • Saludos!

Yo tengo el Mega Cdx pero no tengo ningun juego en cd... me puedes ayudar para grabar los juegos?

  • Thank you for your reply. Sadly, I have no idea what you are saying............

    STAY AWESOME!

  • From what I can understand Dreamcastecuador said the following:

I have a Mega CDX but I do not have any games on cd, could you help me burn games on cd?

  • LOL! I appreciate the translation!

Well I think I will let that one slide, I don't provide that kind of info in general so I don't think I would attempt to translate the details. I find it funny, that kind of knowledge is so widely available online.

  • My 32X and CDX work well together. Saves a lot of space.

  • I've really wanted one of these for a while now. It'd clear up a lot of room on my rack. Someday!

  • I bought one of these consoles for £15 from a game shop called GAMESTATION

  • I recently rehooked my Genesis w/ 32X up to my HD TV (also an LG, small world) and it looks and sounds beautiful. There's a used game chain down where I used to live that has a ton of systems (Atari, Colecovision, Intellivision, Virtual Boys, etc.) and they've got Sega CDs and Game Gears, both of which I'd like to get some day. Unfortunately the Sega CD's $99, which doesn't quite feel worth it... I got my 32X and Knuckles Chaotix for 30 bucks at Toys'R'Us in 97 when 16 bit systems were dying out

  • while not my favorite system as a system itself, i like my cdx physically.

its just so stetically beautiful and elegant.

  • Agreed!

  • I have one, and it's in great condition, i got it from ebay.

  • Waaahhh - I want to have one, too :-D

  • Yes one of my favorites for sure. Unfortunately not the proper power supply, just a standard Sega Genesis one which does work but it is not the exact same specifications so I hope one day to track down the true CDX supply or at least completely compatible.........

  • yeah, would be better I guess :-)

Hmmm, now that I saw this, I need to go and find one... Its your foult ;-)

  • Ha Ha! I accept full responsibility!

  • Perfect, so I am going to send you my bankwire right now... hehehe

  • Excellent video, thank you for posting this!!

I had an X'EYE, they are bigger then the Genesis Model 1. I saw a CDX at a used game store today, and they are quite compact.

BTW, the picture looks excellent on your HDTV! I had heard that older consoles don't look as good on HDTV's.

  • Well unfortunately that is not MY tv, it was on the site I was looking after, a perk if you will lol!

  • Nice vid.

I was one of the losers to buy the original Sega CD unit for $300 back in '93. Still got it.

     What was I thinking??!!

    Sega pwned me.

  • Hey I would LOVE to have the original Sega CD I had back in the day, front loading unit but NOT the typical one you usually see listed, I am SURE the first version looked different and definitely cooler.....

  • Yeah, the first model was cooler with the retractable CD tray and it's green and red lights display, but it started freezing up on me after awhile of playing in it's later years., so I ended up going out and getting the model 2 version with the Tom Cat Alley pack-in game.

  • I have one of these in perfect condition. It really was, and still is an amazing machine. Not only that but it just LOOKS really good, beautiful even. I still play it and have incredible amounts of fun. I even used to use it as a portable cd player..and yes it eats batteries, but it does last a few hours, more than enough back then. Great review and it's sad that this system is so unknown! Most people just look at me funny when I talk about it.

  • I love it, sadly I do not have proper power supply, it works but is basic Genesis model, this happens a lot with used CDX systems, I want to get a proper or at least completely compatible power supply....

  • Yeah the actual CDX Adapter is really rare to find, I was lucky to have 1 with my system, but the insane part is that the power supply weighed MORE than the system itself and it came in an insane 1.5Amp!!!

  • Thanks for doing this, I never realized I hadn't actually seen one of these before.

Wow, only one adapter for the whole setup? Blasphemy!

  • sega multi mega such a great combination of mega drive and mega cd something they should have done from the start except the battery slot is only used for listening to cds wont let you play games

  • Well they probably figured you'd only be mobile listening to CD's, to run it for games you would be stationary and plug it in, also the video output and start and stop disk accessing would of required more batteries and still run down faster.....

  • i have the segacd x for ebay some av cable won;t work for white and yellow i don't have red on it

  • I envy you man, I have been trying to get my hands on one of these since 2006 and still have not seen 1 so that I can buy it!

  • Well thanks! There are some on Ebay.

If you search with these keywords there are a few listings:

    sega cdx, cdx

Sure most are way over priced but there are a few down the list that seem like possibilities?

  • I should have updated this but I think ya saw it already that I got a Sega CDX :) Mine costed me $90USD

  • I like your videos but dude, buy yourself a tripod or something for your camera. All that bouncing around is giving me a headache! :)

  • I know, I know. It's defintely on my list. I DO try to be as steady as I can in the meantime, I will try to prop the camera in the future until I get t tripod. On a good note, in the meantime I am trying to upload the 2nd part of my Colecovision USB cart review, there is shakiness at the beginning bit after that it's all captured gameplay. I know what you mean, it doesn't help this cheap HD camera has no motion stabilization, hell some of the guys I watch is like watching from a roller coaster..

  • You're really building up a nice collection, maximumrd! Impressive stuff.

  • Thanks! yeah slowly but surely (don't call me shirely) I love getting new systems and sharing, lots more to come!

  • Press A+B+C to get a Blue Spheres level (Blue Spheres is the Sonic 3/S&K minigame) with S&K plus any Genesis cart. It reads something off the cart to determine the stage, so any specific Genesis game will always send you to the same level.

Put in Sonic 1 and press A+B+C to access the full Blue Spheres game, with every possible Blue Spheres level (millions of them!) and password save to access any specific one. :)

This won't work with combo carts - Sega 6-Pak, etc. Just stand-alone Sonic 1.

  • Cool, thanks!

  • yes! Need to know if a 32x works with this. One of my burning questions. Bummer they didn't build the 32x in. I guess then it would be a Neptune, eh?

  • I think you can use the 32X as long as you can plug in the video cord to the back of it. I have seen it done before, so it is definitely possible, just not sure if it requires special or custom-made cables.

There's a video on here somewhere of a guy who made his own Neptune by shoving the guts of a 32X inside a model 2 Genesis. Great stuff.

  • I don't think it requires anything special actually. Sega claimed it was incompatible, some issue with sheilding but that has been proven false. Yes I saw that custom Neptune, it was awesome, I wish I had such modding skillz I would do all that stuff!

  • You need a tripod Rob...or maybe a table or something.

  • Yeah I know, it's definitely on the list for sure, other priorities right now though. Still, my steadyness has improved a lot and I have seen far worse, especially with all these low cost HD pocket cames like mine that do not have motion stabilization built in.......

  • I just meant that if you set the camera down you can play the game easier with two hands!

  • True enough but it was kind of an odd setup there and I was a little rushed, thanks though!

  • Holy $#@%, I must have this!

  • another reason why it's not called a CDX here is because Datel brought out a cart which let you play import games on a Mega CD and that was also called the CDX (so Datel had the Euro copyright to the name).

  • Nice video and game choice with Final Fight CD. It's a great port to the arcade and much better then the original Genesis version.

  • Yes a great Sega CD game!

  • I would love to get a CDX, and definitely rig a screen for it! I think I have seen the GCN screen used for it..?

Can you backup your backups?? I'd try it. Must protect originals!

  • Most modern burning programs can duplicate originals or backups just using their own "Disc Duplicate" or "Make image/Burn image" functions for all cd based systems prior to the PLAYSTATION. Issues arise by using bad or improper media (IE: DON'T use re-writable) There are exceptions and work arounds, let's just say the info is "out there" you know.....for those who want to protect their originals....yeeeaaahhhhh........

  • LOL

  • wow I have only seen this once in person

  • Cool yeah that is why I like to choose the alternative or lesser known versions of hardware........

  • I think the CDX was not appricieted. 32x + genesis + CD = Mega Genesis (MegaDrive) combo! Nice review MaximumRD! If I recall correctly you don't have the Magnavox Oddysey 2?

    "...to protect the original..."

    *quickly shuts the lid*

    "Yeah, hehe."
