Awesome! I don't know how these things really work, but at the corners it would be nice if the turn was not so much a 90 degree angle--it would be more realistic--but yours is the best one I've seen--totally awesome!
How many ghosts does your axeworthy support? what type of motor? how many RPMs? how many pulley's? do you have a line tensioner anywhere? does it work in the rain? love your work, so many questions.....
@mmargevicius I"m only using one ghost. The motor is a 3/4 hp variable speed with PLC speed controller. The RPMs are adjustable and will be different for every application. I have somewhat of a line tensioner the mounting bolt hole play is enough to tighten the line after it is installed. I tied the line while it was off the pulleys and then wedged it onto the pulleys with a screwdriver. It is very, very tight and has to be this way or else the ghost will come off the pulley.
@NCCadyFamily do you cover the motor from rain? can it work in the rain? if it does rain, do you leave the ghost out in the rain? how high are the pulleys from the ground? what are the distances between pulley's? i started my axeworthy over the weekend and am trying to figure all this stuff out... thanks!
NCCady . . . This is by far the BEST Axworthy ghost I've seen on the web. I am building one this year. I consider your ghost to be the holy grail of Axworthy Ghosts. If mine turns out a fraction as bad-ass as yours is, I will be happy. I am going to use a Razor Scooter motor on a power supply to give it some balls. What are you using for pully wheels?
@cadge31 Thanks! I'm using UHMW machined pulleys with a 6006 series bearing. The drive pulley is a UHMW pulley mounted on a hub attached to the motor.
@NCCadyFamily I want mine to fly around the yard in a loop with pullys attached to multiple trees. Is there any reason why you only have 3 turning points? Did you try to do more at first, and then downsize it? The reason I'm asking is because it looks like you have the perfect formula for the Axworthy Ghost.
I tried the axworthy last year with a sewing machine motor with a regulator. Mine kept jumping off the pulleys. I would really appreciate it if you could show up close your system as Halloween is getting close and you have one of the best rigs I've seen on youtube. Also how to you hook the ghost to the rig line. Ive tried metal hooks, twist wire, and fishing swivels? My line is heavy duty black twisted fishline that someone recommended. Thanks again Karen
@karen936 and others: The trick is keeping enough tension on the line. I used 250 lb test "spider wire" from Cabellas and the line is so tight, I have to use a screwdriver to force it on to the final pulley. The line can't stretch. Then I can adjust the tension even more. The pulleys are deep grooved with a 45 degree "V" groove. The pulleys are also all in line with each other on the "incoming" side to prevent the weight of the ghost from pulling itself of the pulley. (continued)
**(continued)** @karen936 and others: I just knotted the ghost to the main drive line using the same spider wire. It is knotted in two places to keep him straight. One at the back of his neck and one in the middle of his back. As I drag the stuff out for this year, I'll try and take some close ups of how I attached him. It is pretty simple really.
It's getting close to Halloween again! Thanks for all the comments!
Unfortunately, the big tree I used to mount one of the pulleys on fell down during a storm a month ago. I'm looking for suggestions on what to do! It is the big tree that has the high mounted pulley.
There really is nothing to the ghost part as some of you have inquired about. It is one of those purchased ghosts from Party City. I bent up a wire hanger in the back of the ghost to keep him straight. I'll send pics
Thanks for the comments! I am just now seeing them. The entire Ghost was actually purchased from Party City. I'll post picures.
I used a second string attached to the middle of his back to keep him facing in the same direction.
It is driven by a .75hp (I think) motor attached to a machined plastic UHMW pulley. I used 200 or 250 lb test "spiderwire" fishing line from Cabellas. All the pulley brackets are welded steel.
I'll post some detailed pictures soon! Good luck on your display!
Awsome job. I too do a big Halloween yard See youtube" Gralish'sgraveyard" I would love to learn how you made this, How it goes around pullys etc. If you can share it with me , Thank you. Write ewokman1956@yahoo.com
Great job! I'm going to build one for this years display, and i definately like this set up better than the usual styrofoam balls and gauze you see everywhere.
Just a few questions though-
What did you use to make the arms, how do you keep it facing forward, and like clybdav asked, what are you using for a motor?
You should post a behind the scenes video so we can see how you did it!
This is really cool looking.Well done

Nice, what are you using to drive it? My Axworthy setup will carry a heavy ghost as well, but I had to downsize to keep them out of the kids reach!
clybdav 2 years ago
@clybdav I'm using a 3/4 HP with a speed controller. Check out the pics in the description, too. I've updated them. Thanks!
