Post Office - iffy. It could easily be replaced or converted into a private company - not saying it should - but there are allot of non Gov. mail compaines Federal Express, UPS, etc.

Police offer a public service, which is usually funded @ the community/state level.

Teachers - not Gov.

Construction - not Gov. (and usually short contracts - nothing long term)

Firefighters - again a public service @ the community/state level.

EG There are cities with only volunteer firefighters, etc

Also, teachers, if they teach at public schools, are being funded, and usually at the community/state level. Government job. The Post Office is most obviously run by the government. Yes, all of these things could be privately run, but they are not. They are run by the government.

Let's assume the government spending in the stimulus will lead only to short term contract jobs. Those jobs have the potentional to create permanent jobs. How? Damn near every small business job makes use of government created and paid for infrastructure. Whether it's the roads, electricity grid, airports, or broadband lines. If we spend money WISELY on infrastructure we vastly increase the number of long term jobs that can be created.
