The prophet had servants (slaves) whom he commanded. However his servants (slaves) were treated with respect. He had treated them equally and rewarded them for their doings. He gave them proper grounds to sleep on and food to eat, he did not harm them in any way unlike the slave trade.

Of course, we cannot compare "Slavery" of the ancient world to the colonial period of Euroean history, but clearly Islam does allow slavery.
