  • @jcmegabyte always my pleasure....

  • fantastic thank you for uploading this video

  • My pleasure - I'm glad you enjoyed the show! :-)

  • Very nice!

  • Thanks for checking these out! =)

  • can someone tell me how they make a video like this because i relly want to know how to do it?

  • The night time lapses are made by taking many (300-2500 ) long exposure (8-32 second) images over several hours, sometimes all night long. The trails are made with a proprietary compositing technique I designed, using my own software and methods. Similar effects can be made using the "Stack" effect in photoshop and others. Once I have all the images, I make them into a time lapse video. There are several freeware apps like Photolapse that can to do it. :-)

  • Fantastic!

  • Thanks so much! :-)

  • So awesome. A definite play-list and favorite add. Wow

  • Thanks a bunch for the view and kind words - glad you enjoyed the show! =)

  • who came here cuz of miku...?

  • when doing the star trails with an object in the foreground should i focus the foreground objects in the camera lense and not worry about the stars. I think i have been going wrong by focusing in on the stars and this is making the tree or other foreground object end up quite blury

  • When shooting really wide angle scenes, like the night sky, most everything in frame should be in focus, unless the nearby objects (trees) are REALLY close. Make sure you're zoomed-out all the way, and try to back away from foreground objects to see if you can get more of the scene in focus. If not, you will have to choose which things in the scene are your main objective, and give them the focus. Do experiment a bit though - sometimes you can get really cool and unexpected effects :-)

  • Somehow I expected the MIB theme to play during the beginning. Nice.

  • That would be a fitting theme! Cheers =)

  • awesome, i love to see the sky at night and the stars, it's awesome! ^_^

  • Thanks so much for checking it out! :-)

  • I love watching the sky at night. This is very awesome!

  • I'm glad you liked this one - thanks for the view and nice comment! :-)

  • Tripping balls @_@

  • you fast talker

  • I don't understad a thing of what your'e talking about, but i loooooooove it ,it will be my Dream's World,Fantastic :thanks a lot

  • Well I'm glad you're enjoying the show! Thanks for the kind words =)

  • Do you use DSLR or hybrid?

And how do you get the batery to last?

I've been experimenting with a D2x but when i was coming to about 400 hundred 25/sec exposures the battery started running low.

Another thing is that the shutter will go to hell after about 100K exposures so thats why Im wondering if you use hybrid.

  • I'm using external power supplies for both of my time lapse cameras when doing all-night shooting. The batteries (new AA NiMH 2700mAh) will only last 5-6 hours at best. Both are hybrid Digital Still Cameras (DSC) wiith no mirrors. My oldest is a Canon S5 with 1.1 million frames shot, and the other is a Canon SX-10 with over 500k frames already. I have been holding off getting a DSLR mostly because of the low shutter life ratings... I could shoot 100k frames in 6 months or less! :-O

  • @jcmegabyte yes ther shutter thing is what I am worried about myself. So thats why Im looking into hybrids. I got lots of good optics for Nikon and I realy want to use those for timelaps photo so I hope the release a mirror less camera soon.

  • I can definitely recommend the Canon "S" series cameras, as resonably priced, very durable, and produce decent results. The big advantange the freeware CHDK firmware hack which greatly expands the cameras' capabilities, including programmable intervalometer and motion detection scripts. I think the SX-30 is the most recent model (I have an S5 and SX-10). The lower-end Canon Powershot models which are supported by CHDK might work well for time lapse too.

  • @jcmegabyte Thats pretty nice. I work as a camera salesman but I have very little experience with video. Canon S are pretty good indeed. I know that Canon are preparing a no shutter dslr but god knows when they'll release it. Thanks for good info mate hopefully I'll get around and try some time lapse myself.

  • The technology and converging of photography and video are interesting - and mirrorless DLSRs would be a great improvement in durability. High sensitivity/ISO and high speed (frame rates) are another cool avenue, and I'm watching Casio to see what they come out with next. In the meantime, I'm looking into the Canon D5Mk2, perhaps a kit of bundle with lenses, intervalometer, power supply, etc. so if you know of any good deals from reliable suppliers, do let me know!

  • This video reminds me of how small we really are compared to the endless depths of the universe. And how lucky we are to live on this paradise island in the cosmic ocean that we call Earth.

Well done. Haven't seen a video that makes me feel this way before. :)

  • Thanks for the great comment! Upon viewing my first "starspin" timelapse in motion I, too, was surprised at the perspective it gave me. I was hooked from that point! :-)

  • Brilliant!

    so many hours editing!!! Congrats!

  • It was indeed a lot of work but well worth it! Thanks so much for watching and commenting =)

  • Magic! I think it's very beautiful!

  • I'm happy you enjoyed the show - thanks so much for watching! :-)

  • Another amazing video. Am I mistaken or is this your music as well?

  • Thanks so much Teresa :-) Yes, I write all my own music as well, under the artist name "Technician". I'm happy you're enjoying the show!

  • is this real? However, i think its beautifull.

  • All the video you see is made from real time-lapse/long-exposure images of the sky, taken with a Canon digital still camera. The trails are made by adding the images together using a compositing technique I've developed. There are no computer-generated "fake" animations. :-)

  • @jcmegabyte Great work! But how do you generate hte movement? It seems almost impossible to me to get the trails and the smooth movement as timelapse... just can't figure out how...

  • The time lapse method is exactly the same for day and night, except that night frames are exposed for 8 - 32 seconds vs. 1/80 - 1/500th sec for daytime. A camera on a tripod shoots 1000 - 2000 images overnight, which I assemble into video at 30fps, for nice smooth movement. For star trails, I run each frame through my compositing process first, which basically adds adjacent frames together, before assembling them into video. It's a long, work-intensive process to make these sequences. =)

  • Very nice!

  • Thanks! =)

  • wow!!

  • Thanks so much for visiting! :-)

  • @jcmegabyte Which scenes did you use the Canon SX10 is?

  • The results I get from the SX10 and the S5 are nearly identical, so It's pretty hard for me to tell them apart. For certain, all the older scenes with the 4:3 aspect (black bars on the sides) are from the S5. All the 16:9 (full HD frame) sequences could be from either camera, depending on which one was handy at the time! :-)

  • fantastique.....!!! j'aime....le rêveur

  • Thanks so much for watching! :-)

  • I love the work you do, it was once what I wanted to do as a career choice (photography) but going back to reality it wasn't the best suited choice for me currently. However, watching these videos makes me remember why I wanted to be a photographer, specifialising in sky photographs :) On the other hand, I would love to take this on as a hobby, would you be able to suggest a good, cheap ammateur camera that isn't too hard to use? Thanks.

  • Thanks for the great comment! Making any real money in photography pretty hard for most of us, but it's defintiely cool as a hobby! As you learn and get better, it could eventually turn into a career, but either way, you win if you do it because you enjoy it! :-) I use a Canon S5 and SX10 (about $400, but no longer made). I think the SX20 is the latest model in this series. Definitely pick a camera with full auto and full manual capability. AA batteries and SDHC cards are a plus, too :-)

  • @jcmegabyte Thanks for replying so quickly! Ah yes, money-wise I heard it's quite tough which was one of the reasons why I'm not advancing with Photography as a career. Although I am hoping for a similar job (I'm still in school but hey, adults all around us are asking what we want to do when we're older 24/7) hoping to do some graphic-like work, I enjoy Photo-manipulation as well as photography raw. I guess in your opinion Canon is a better brand than Nikon? Many of my friends use Nikon you see

  • I've always done better at things I enjoy doing, and a number of my hobbies have turned into successful jobs, but beware - turning something you enjoy into work can ruin it. I've abandoned a number of hobbies because of that.

I have little experience with Nikon, so I can't tell you if either is better. I chose Canon models because of design features which are convenient, flexible and cost-effective for my specific needs. Definitely do a lot of research before you buy. :-)

  • @jcmegabyte Heh, suppose that's the trouble, got to choose something you enjoy but not something that'll stress and not off-putting. Camera wise, I've got plenty of time, actually going to ask my parents to get me one for my birthday! Which is a couple of months away. I'm torn between asking for a camera or a tablet though since mine stopped working and I desperately need another one! Anyhow, thank you very much for the great work and your advice :D

  • wgere do u go to get these scenes

  • I do all the photography and compositing myself. I also write the music. Commercial versions of these clips are available on my webiste (the stock footage section at JCMDI) and for non profit purposes you can use these clips in your own YouTube vids (details in my channel info) :-)

  • this is insane i know how mcuh work this took

one sec watching is maybe 10 pictures you took(depens how long the exposure was :D)

    i really respekt that video!

really good work thos vids are killers for the shutter by dslr´s :D

and sorry for my creapy english :D

    grettings from Portugal!

  • You're right, this really was a ton of work :-) Fortunately I'm not using DSLRs for these sequences - I would wear out the shutters in a few months at the rate I shoot! My Canon S5 has 1.1 million frames on it, and my SX10 has over 500k already. The playback is 30fps, so each second is 30 frames, representing about 4 - 10 minutes of realtime, depending on the exposure time per frame (usually 10 - 30 seconds) Thanks for watching and commenting - your english is just fine! :-)

  • man I hate your vids....the make me jealous. Nice work!

  • Thanks so much! I've worked hard to gather all these images and invent new methods to show them so It's great to hear when my work is being enjoyed :-) Cheers!

  • Fantastic video, stunning beauty!

  • Thanks so much for watching and the great comment! =)

  • Wow, this is absolutely stunning! You've captured quite a bit of marvelous scenery here. It is quite mesmerizing...this is getting a thumbs up and going in my favorites. Thank you so much for making these videos and sharing them with us...they're very relaxing. Keep up the good work!

  • Thanks so much for the great comment! I'm really glad to hear you're enjoying the show! :-)

  • I love this!

I have just started making star trails and this has really inspired me! *****

  • Cool - I'll look forward to your video! :-)

  • @jcmegabyte By the way, what program did you use to get that amazing effect? I would really like to try it on mine!

    Thank you!

  • It's actually a set of about 5 different apps working together, some of which I wrote myself. I spent months developing it and I'm not quite ready to release it to the public yet - sort of a trade secret ;-)

Some apps (maybe Sony Vegas, etc.) might do something similar with an effect called "video echo". It's not as clean as mine, but much easier to apply. My method involves processing individual frames. Very time/effort consuming especially when thousands of frames are involved.

  • @jcmegabyte Wow, that is amazing! Well, all your work paid off with this amazing video! Keep up the great work!!

  • Thanks for these, its good to observe as to not miss anything.

  • Glad you enjoyed - thanks for visiting! :-)

  • Thankyou! =)

  • Everytime I see these night time shots I keep thinking how awesome this would look projected on a 360 degree planetarium dome. Beautiful video and the music matches it perfectly.

  • That WOULD be cool! I wish I had the cameras and projection equipment to make something like that. Maybe a fish-eye lens would work... Hmmmm - I'll have to look int o that! :-)

  • My God! this is... this is... there are just no words for this...

    Loved it...

  • Thanks so much! So glad you enjoyed :-)

  • quante volte confondiamo una un corpo luminoso con un satellite o altro troppe cose oramai in cielo....

  • Indeed! Thanks for watching! :-)

  • In Dolores Cannon's Book Pages 266 +267, "The Convoluted Universe" Revised book 2. Read how something called the "Total Sound Resonance" is going to shortly be brought to us through artistic creations, of sight and sound, I do believe this is a taste of what is going to come to awaken the masses. (I am so Home sick for our true HOME the Heaven's.) Thank you for this precursor to this event coming shortly. Peace and Love. Nancy AWESOME :-)

  • Thanks so much, Nancy! :-)

  • Absolutely inspiring! I want to do this!!! Hat's off to you, friend!

  • It took me months to develop this "trade secret" compositing technique :-) Thanks so much for watching and the kind words!

  • months!? Wow. I remember spending time like that of things too. what's your favorite video editing program? I am a huge advocate of sony vegas.

  • I do pretty much all of my editing/rendering in Windows Movie Maker(v6). Of all the programs I've used and/or demo'd, it's got the most user-friendly, low hassle interface I've found yet. The new WMM is out but I don't like the interface nearly as much as the old one.

I do wish it had a few more features like multiple audio tracks for music and narration, chromakey, and split/mulitple screen capability but for the most part it does pretty much all i need, and the price is good too! :-)

  • I am amazed!!! Awesome!!!!

  • Thanks so much for watching and the nice comment! :-)

  • superb mix !

  • Thanks for checking it out and the vid response :-)

  • koolz

  • Thanks!

  • very beautifull i like

  • So glad you enjoyed this one - thanks for watching and the nice comment! =)

  • So beautiful!!! I love this video. Thank you for posting^^♪

  • Thanks so much for the great comment! :-)

  • Wow, you're becoming ver talented in different aspects of nature! Have you ever tried to plant a flower, then film it growing? Then Time lapse it? I've always thought it was so cool. Anyway, astromony is indeed an interest point for me! Sometimes on cold nights I'll get dressed and go out with my binoculars and look at the stars, trying to find constellations and planets. I've always thought that in winter you can see the stars much, much clearer. And I loved the music! Great, no, AWESOME VIDEO!

  • Thanks so much for the super nice comment! I haven't done the time lapse seed/plant growing thing yet, but it's something I've pondered. There are already lots of those out there, too.

It does seem to be the case that freezing-cold nights offer the best stargazing, and why is it that meteor showers always have to be at the hardest times to watch them - 2am to 5am? Sheesh - who schedules these things anyway! XD

  • AMAZING i never seen anything like it before THANK YOU for posting such beautiful video ,

  • My pleasure - so glad you enjoyed! :-)

  • ::)) Wow...absolutely fabulous vdo/music ... n so so relaxing...great job as always 5*/5* Thanks ::))

    ~ Star*

  • Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed :-)

  • That was the most peaceful 4 minutes of my busy day :)

I was checking out some other time lapse videos and stumbled across your work. You've got some great videos! I've worked on several time lapse videos of various construction projects in Austin, TX that you might enjoy watching on my channel, since you seem like a fan of them! Great stuff again, can't wait to sit down and watch some more. Cheers, Jose

  • Thanks for the great comment! Yup - I'm definitely a T/L fan... I'll check it out :-)

  • ***** + ***** like a dreamland , ciao !!!

  • Wouldn't it be cool if the sky could really look like this in real life! What great entertainment it would be :-) Thanks for watching and the nice comment!

  • awesome stuff!

  • Thanks so much! :-)

  • beauty

  • Thanks for watching! :-)

  • so relaxing!

  • Thanks so much for checking it out! :-)

  • Just amazing!

  • Glad you enjoyed - thanks for watching! :-D

  • SAME CAMERA!!:)

Can you tell me the exposure and etc?:)

  • A lot of different setting were used, depending on the clip and conditions at the time. The aperture is always fully opened, and the time lapse shots of the sky are taken with shutter speeds anywhere from 8 to 60 seconds, and ISO settings usually between 400 and 1600). I usually use CHDK (available for both the S5 and SX-10) for intervalometer and extended settings, when needed.

The trails come from a compositing technique I've developed. :-)

  • AWESOME!!:)

  • May all the stars in the nights sky; that you so freely share with me and the world, be yours to ride on for eternity.

    ~ Melania

  • Thanks so much for the kind words! =)

  • let me take the time to give you credit on making this video now it is apart of my life and it has change(maybe not so much but still there is a change). You have expanded my mind on thinking how our world spins and the beauty it has when there is notihing to see but lights in the sky, but like everything else it must take time. thank you i feel better typing this message nothing but good things in your life.

  • Thanks so much for taking the time to writie this great comment! Before I developed this compositing technique, I had never really visualized the movement of the stars over time or the interesting perspective it gives of our point of view from the surface of this spinning ball! It's great when I get to experiment and create new and artistic things, and get to learn from them as well.

Cheers and happy new year to you! :-)

  • so so kewl. (:

  • Thanks so much for watching! :-)

  • Thanks so much for watching this and the nice comment! :-)

I know what you mean about the city messing-up the view of the night sky... I'm just north of Los Angeles in a "small" city of only 300,000 people so the skies are only so-so for meteor showers. Even so, I was able to see quite a few. Unfortunately, my cameras are just sensitive enough to record only the brightest ones. but there are a few in my vids :-)

  • Wow, I could only dream about having video like this to go along with the original song Stargazer I posted last week.... I got all my video from NASA/NOAA. Found your video tonight as a "related video". Your work is beyond very impressive. Thanks for the efforts!

  • Thanks for the kind words! :-) I do allow free use of my footage for non-commercial, non-profit use, such a YouTube videos. Just snag the clips from my JCMDIStockFootage channel and enjoy. Happy holidays and new year! :-)

  • I must say, you're an artist. Thank you for sharing!

  • Thanks so much for the view and kind words! Happy holidays :-)

  • I don"t know what to say...This is awesome..Keep up the good work!!

  • So glad you enjoyed! Thanks so much for the view and great comment =)

  • Wow! Didn't have time to comment when I first watched it last night. Love the music, also.

  • Thanks for the nice comment, and on my music, too. :-)

  • Amazing!!!

    I like it!

  • Thanks so much for watching! :-)

  • It's really awesome,thanks alot:)

  • Glad you enjoyed - thanks for visiting! :-)

  • I LOVE pictures of space, so this is amazing!!! Magical! Can you enter movie contests with this? Defintely something to watch over & over.

  • I really enjoy watching and making these sort of things, too. =) There probably are contest-like movie expos and such but it seems like just posting on the internet is one of the best ways of getting stuff like this "out there" :-)

  • I really enjoyed this, it looks wonderful! It must have been a lot of work, but it was definitely worth it :-)

  • Indeed it was - several months to shoot the time lapse footage and then a couple of weeks to process (composite) all the images into the final video. Glad you liked it and thanks for watching/commenting! :-)

  • awesome 6/5^^

  • Thanks for view, comment and stars! =)

  • Great Vid !!!!!!!!!

  • Thanks for watching! :-)

  • simply amazing bro

  • Thanks for checking it out! =)

  • I've always wanted to watch the stars like this. Or perhaps see the moon in all it's colorful glory. Too bad I live near LA.

  • I shot all of these not too far from L.A., too (Santa Clarita). There is a LOT of light pollution here but on really clear nights, especially when the Santa Ana winds are active, night sky watching can be surprisingly decent. Nothing like going to the middle of the desert, though!. :-)

  • I like this!! very creative! and i'm still exploring your channel :)

  • Glad you liked this one - thanks for visiting :-) Lots to see and discover on my family of channels - enjoy!

  • Wow!!!

    wunder Universum :-)

  • Thanks so much for watching! :-)

  • freaky cool

  • It would definitely freak some people out to look up and see the sky doing this! Thanks for watching :-)

  • This seriously gave me goosebumps, it's so good. The music fits awesomely with the clips you used. Faved and five stars. ^w^

  • very nice video i never have seen something like that

  • I hadn't seen this done before either, and it's been something I've been trying to develop for quite some time now. Thanks for watching! :-)
