  • 730 donkeys asses liked this stupid video

  • 20 donkey's watched this video

  • i need to get some rest but I CANT STOP LISTENING.

  • Quick and jaunty little tune with a great beat, I really like it and it's funny too. This song will brighten your day if you listen to it no doubt.

  • I have the same necklace that Alan doyle is wearing but to be honest i don't know what it represents.

  • @matthewosmond1984 in the age of sail but before the ships used steam to propel the ship they had "steam donkeys" watt steam engines used to lift load pull drop and shift cargo that used to be moved by hand.thus ridin' on a donkey,i.e sitting at the controls of a watt steam engine and feeding wood or coal into the fire bin to produce the steam that run the engine

  • this song reminds me of south australia especially when they mention cape horn

  • my friend's dad is in this band

  • @keppoch123 which member is your friends dad.

  • @matthewosmond1984 i think drummer

  • @matthewosmond1984 im pretty sure he's the drummer

  • @TheMaskedDonut -- first lines--"were ye ever in Quebec, loading timber on the deck" . This is an authentic shanty. Work on board included stowing cargo, not just hauling on sheets. Stowing timber, screwing cotton, etc. was hard physical labour. You were lucky if you had a steam donkey to assist.

  • @shantyman101 most don't even know what a donkey is ...lol other then the animal that is . cheers

  • I love it!

  • Did they just seriously sing a song about riding a donkey? Yes they did, and it was awesome!

  • @TheMaskedDonut no, they didn't. look at the comment below yours.

  • a "donkey" is or was a piece of logging equipment used to move logs

  • @robmar If you are an American, you are more likely to have German heritage. Of course, you will probably always have a little Irish. My ancestors had the one trip across the tracks....

  • @BaronVonHawkeye depends what area of the states your from, some areas are high UK decent, others theres french and mennonite and all the otherites who made an exodus from germany, and then theres average joe germans and hispanics in other areas

  • Love this song and Great Big Sea in general :D

  • God bless the Britss

  • @pb1813 They are Canadian lol but it doesnt matter either way... if you are from north america you have European decent so if you are a white american, most likely british / scottish/irish herritage. :)

  • @Robmar420 I am Canadian to I prefer Britian

  • Lol

  • makes me proud to be a newfoundlander

  • I've really gotten to love this song! A great opener for a Great Big Sea concert. How many people know what the "donkey" actually is?

  • I have never seen them live, in fact the cd I bought was clearence... I would of paid full price! I just love it!

  • @mmpastmaster I seen them back when I was 17 years old in a small town in Ontario.. It was one of the best nights, some friends who love the music and a massive crowd singing along... Doobies were being passed and good times were had by all.

  • The guy with the long hair looks like Curtis Joseph

  • @ImTheVip Ha, never noticed, but Alan Doyle totally does. +)

  • I've only ever seen this band once. I was about 8 years old, maybe a bit younger, at the Festival of Friends in the Hammer. I was standing on a chair so I could see, and my mother damn near knocked me out of it, we were having so much fun bopping around. I want so badly to see these guys again. New life goal: See GBS in Newfoundland.

  • I have seen them in concert 6 times now. I absolutely love this band. Only cd I was not fancy of was the fortunes favour. The song Donkey riding actually mentions the city I live in Miramichi. I also seen them live on parliament hill with my 2 daughters when prince william and his new bride Kate were there. That was incredible. They rock!!!!

  • 1:01 Brendan Fraser

  • Who in this bunch has that sexy low voice?

  • @mtrenchfan Darrell Power, the one on the far left with the glasses. Try listening to a live rendition of "General Taylor" and you can really hear his excellent bass line

  • What. The. Hell?

  • Playing this in a concert band. People actually bop when they play. Epic song ;D

  • donkey is the crane loader on the harbour isn't it?

  • @redmudpei yes, the term "donkey" in a maritime context usually referred to a "steam donkey", an early form of engine that powered the winches that loaded cargo onto the ships. However i believe it could also refer to the bilge pumps on the ship itself.

  • @redrabbit2350 sexiest -famuous- bodhran player :3 I know another sexy bodhran player.

  • @graddy49 It's not about the animal :/ It's about the type of engine on the boats.

  • thumbs up if this is the only great big sea song you ever need to hear!!

  • @kibaie: I saw them in concert last night and you're totally right, it's impossible to stay seated and not sing along!

  • THEY LOVE IT!!! LMAOOOOO

  • I can't place the name of the tune played on the violin at the beginning of the song for the life of me!

    Help me out, guys?

  • @mashmusic11235 It's actually called Donkey Riding

  • @mashmusic11235 come on eileen

  • I always wish I was there when I hear the crowd going bonkers because a good song is coming on.

  • Donkeys are steam engines and they were also used in the mining and logging industries as well as shipping. They were definitely iron "beasts of burden" and the men were glad for them but they could also be dangerous as can all machinery. As a Canadian I am so proud of this group - they sing the songs of the people - I hope they never change their outlook.

  • it was in my brain, had to youtub it,ill be singing this in supermarket.that should embarass my kool daughter ha ha..

  • Impossible not to like these guys at first sight!

  • I always sing this song biking, lol @ donkeys

  • lol donkey

  • its not the orangial but its k i guess

  • yeaahh Miramichi represent

going to see GBS again in Feb..cant wait!!!!

  • In a completely random song, the highest voted comments are highly educated.

  • @Bouncyheart Hardly random- GBS is known for their covers of traditional sea shanties as well as their originals. Donkey Riding was a song for loading and unloading cargo from ships, because they used a kind of winch called a Donkey Engine.

  • whos ur best guy

  • Donkey riding...a small boat used to manipulate logs in the water on the East coast. Hence the "Donkey" RIDIING. Great video.

  • YAY FOR MIRAMICHI, MY HOME TOWN!!!!!

  • What is the instrument that the bassist is using to make the snaps?

  • @DJWidget They're called bones.

  • My mom made me listen to this stuff as a kid now that im over here in South Korea my room mate thinks im crazy for listening to this !

  • god, this is why I'm proud to be canadian.

  • Oh how I wish I were Canadian

  • @torichio It's a good time man. If you ever want to feel like you have a family despite not being blood related to someone, come stay a year or so in Newfoundland.

  • @Kholdstarezero that is so true!! i stayed a year in newfoundland and i still talk to my familiy over there a lot and as soon as i have enough money for the plane ticket i will go and visit them. i miss my second home!! hi to all newfies from germany :)

  • America..you can keep Justin Bieber. Just leave our Great Big Sea alone! :)

  • @HLJokerRP

You can keep them both Canada!!

  • defiantly Canada's best!

  • I remember at this forest museum in my town, there was this video of a logging town back in the 1900's and this tune was playing along with it while my dad was adding humorous commentary to the video for my amusement when i was a little kid. Good Times!

  • I've been teaching my african grey parrot to sing this - so far, all I've gotten is a head bob ;)

  • I like heiland laddie better.

    same tune, different words

  • one of my fav bands

  • I have a tap dance to this song this yearr :)

  • I saw them when they came to the Philadelphia Folk Festival and they were AWESOME!!

  • I would love to learn how to play the bodhran, my mom plays the pipes but she says I don't have the hands for it, so I've always wanted to pick up a drum!

  • this band HAS to be one of the best live acts of all time! i've seen them live so many times when i was a little kid, seeing them live again this summer, can't wait!

  • Really random, but it goes with the nautical theme. a "Donkey d***" is any large metal stick onboard a ship. ie, a large pipe wrench, whenbeing used, is called one, the handle of a big crank is also called this. so "donkey riding" +"donkey d***"=......i think you get the picture

  • lol the name of this had to be a planned joke

  • @Karozy nope

donkeys are actually really dangerous automobiles that killed many people

  • @agenda88s8 That's interesting and I did not know that, but I was referring to the bands name in conjunction to the song title. Which when read together is somewhat humorous for those who have an overdeveloped knowledge of innuendo and slang which would ill serve much of higher society. Frankly though, I do not hold myself accountable for everything I've been exposed to. lol

  • sooooo beautiful!!!!!!

  • 'Donkey Riding' is a sea chantey that would be sunk for those seamen who worked the capstan to raise or lower the anchor. It was a bit slower than this version!

  • Actually, originally it was a tune called Bonnie Hieland Laddie, which usually omitted the third part of the verse. I learned the tune very slightly different as well. If you want I can try to find you a link.

  • @stat1791 its mostly about jesus if you listen to the lyrics closely, jesus went into jeruselum on an ass( donkey) and then you hear the king of kings, again jesus, jesus was known as king of kings

  • Not in this case, mate. None of the lyrics are religious, they're sea-faring. Which I suppose many would consider religion... More likely what they're referring to are the donkey engines, little drag-arounds that can supply power for jobs around the ship. Menial tasks that have to be done, and a pain in the ass to do them.

The lyrics are constantly changing, depending on what locations you're at and what you want to say; if you've heard a religious version, I wouldn't be much surprised!

  • @austindal No, it has nothing to do with Jesus or donkeys.

"Donkey riding" is what they called it when 3 or 4 sailors would turn a big crank on the deck that was used to hoist cargo. Last I checked, Quebec, Cape Horn, Fortune Bay and London are nowhere near Jerusalem.

  • when i was in the merchant marines i knew a guy who would sing this when i ask him were i came from he said it was a old sailing song i wonder if that is true

  • Just a awesome song and band...

  • Is this on DVD?

  • I'm playing this in my senior band o.o'

    Different version though

  • wow, i remember learning this song in grade 4 music class. oh how i miss those songs.

  • they should grab two empty shells of coconut and start bangin' 'em together.

  • No, that would be a horse.

  • @superstardum you shouldn't be so picky, good sir. hooves are hooves. ;-)

  • I love new rock but I was raised on GBS and ACDC and I think everyone should at least listen to where great music originated.

  • You mean classical music, right?
