Crete was part of the Ottoman empire with a sizeably muslim population; Greece encouraged a rebellion, started a war and lost it...but still got Crete in the peace settlement because of the pressure exerted by the western European countries but still had to pay reparations. Greeks tried to ethnically cleanse Cyprus and annex it (like Crete) but nobody backed Greece up this time because times they are a changing- to quote the song
