@drex48239 nope, that would defeat the purpose of this set. When I play a double headed kit I prefer no porting of the head I think it really kills the sound. but to each is their own.
awesome kit, i built the same thing years ago before all the rage, didnt come out nearly as nice as yours but sounded decent, great job and playin too!
Thanks, I've been building sets for about 10 years now. My main focus is on the supper portable stuff. I've been gigging for about 15 years and having a huge set losses its novelty after awhile. Its nice to build a set that has the same sound as a larger one. I know its not the same as a 24x 18 bass drum but hey the whole thing fits int he cab of my truck in one case hw included
First of all: kudos to you for building your own kit. Definitely makes you appreciate your art when you craft your instrument yourself. Snare sounds sick. Personally, I think you should wood hoop the toms as well. I really do think those toms need bottom heads. Hard to hear over YouTube if I just disagree with your tuning or you just need bottom heads. As for your kick: Make it wayyyy smaller. I'm talking 12" height. It'll match the tightness of your snare. Check out Steve Jordan's small kick.
Its a set I built myself actually. Its 8 ply shells 18x 12 14x7 and 10x5. If your interested I could build one for you too for about the cost of the manu kit. I recently went into business building custom sets search danbriechle in ebay if you want to see a beautiful kit in tamo ash I have up now
This KIT perfectly demonstrates why you need to have Bottom heads!!!
This config gives you mainly the Top head sound with out the thickness and depth of a dual headed drum! I dig the look of the kit but the snare sounds like a Cowbell...hahaha ....but nice playin anyway!
To each is his own. Some people like bass drums that are 24 x 26 some people like snare drums that are 150 ply some people like vintage kits some people like acrylic shells some people like buckets and trash cans some people like to only carry one drum case to the show instead of ten
the point is what ever makes you happy wont always make some else happy
@candidcomment drums don't NEED to have resonant heads to sound good, listen to a lot of the recordings to come out of Hollywood that Hal Blaine played on. he had a MONSTER kit that had custom made spun fiberglass concert toms, and they sound great on those recordings.
LOVE the snare!!!! What is it?? For my personal taste I could stand to here the kick and toms tuned up a bit. :) Maybe even a resonant head on your kick too! Sound great man!
I have MAXTONE TRAVELLER kit, very similar like PEARL TRAVELLER KIT.10x4,14x4 and 20x8.They are single headed.I had problem with sound. They sounds BLAUM,BLAUM. I need 5 years to find heads, and they sounds good now.On toms-POWERSTROKE REMO clear,on BASS-PINSTRIPE COATED with REMO MUFL.All drums are medium tune.
Hey man. I want to get some wood hoops for my toms and possibly bass and snare. Do you know any good sites/shops or anything? (Shops in the UK. Not bothered about the sites)

Which Hipgig kit is this? I can only find the Rick Marotta & Manu Katche sets & yours looks simpler and nicer! The maple finish is also great.
