Once again I am going to put out the hypothesis that Tobe Hooper may have been hired to direct this film, but it was actually Steven Spielberg who completed directing it. Google it.
Spielberg's all over it:
- 1:50 Slight track to right as station wagon backs up hard and slams car
- 2:00 The classic Spielberg Dolly shot on "What's happening... what's happening???" (Dead giveaway)
@iwantoldschool I'm unaware of Hooper walking away from it, but I read somewhere that Spielberg constantly took over for quite a few scenes. Hooper didn't like it, but it was Spielberg's money and he wrote the story/screenplay and felt some ownership over the project. Spielberg wanted to direct it in the first place but didn't at the behest of Universal execs who were concerned he not wander his attention away from completing E.T. At least that's how I always thought it went down.
@hell5309 Just the fact that the corpses were there in the first place. The Graveyard was desecrated when they moved the cemetery but left the bodies behind. Nobody knew the bodies were there to begin with.
@titanicfinatic Okay, that might warrant a few frightened screams, and perhaps some revulsion. But these people were acting like a horde of zombies was coming down the street, already. Once they realized the bodies were immobile, they should have calmed down.
@hell5309 i don't think you would be so calm in their situation... tbh, i would be at least freaked out viewing the fact that the coffins got to the surface in an unexplainable matter... i mean, what pushed the coffins in the first place out of the ground!?
@hell5309 you're still trying to act cool and all but i think it would be shocking enough only to acknowledge the fact that underneath your house, ACTUALLY, underneath your whole neighbourhood lies an entire cemetery...
Maybe because bodies aren't supposed to just pop out of the ground? And maybe because this family has already had a tree try and eat their son, their daughter sucked into a netherworld, a big gigantic demon head pop out of their kid's closet door, the same closet door turn into a gigantic throat and try and suck them into the same netherworld, a clown come alive and try and strangle their son, and oh...
@DrArchivist Have you not considered that compared to all that, inanimate corpses coming out of the ground at random would seem pretty tame, and therefore not worthy of panic?
Actually, I think it's more like, you've experienced a non-stop barrage of weirdness and horror, and you know that something bad is going to come from all of this. So scream, run, and get the hell out of here now.
You know, in my experience, people that usually like to talk about how tough and cool they would be under extreme stress are usually the first to freak out and have a meltrdown when shit really does hit the fan. .
I believe it was H.P Lovecraft that said the oldest and strongest emotion in mankind was fear, and the greatest fear is fear of the unknown.
And the unknown is preceisly what the people are experiencing in this movie. If you actually saw a house wigging out and corpses popping up out of the ground, I think most of us would be just as terrified as the people in this movie are.
@hell5309 stop acting all cool and mighty dude... even in normal poltergeist situations( furniture floating, dishes flying, etc. -hope you get the idea) people would freak the hell out. people who have no emotions such as fear are mental or crazy so better think twice before saying such things 'cuz instead of proving yourself as a badass, you'll more likely end up humiliated or laughed at. and btw, its natural to get at least a little panicked, its what makes us human.
@hell5309 actually, i'm surprised the family didn't need any therapy after what they've gone through. what just happened in this whole movie would be the ultimate trauma even for the most badass.
@11MasterBlade I'm going to say this once, and this applies to ALL future responders:
Fear is not the same as panic.
The wife's reaction (which included calling for help) would have made sense had the corpses been reanimated or had her life been somehow in danger. But even after the initial shock, unless everyone there had a phobia of skeletons, people would have realized the corpses were harmless and stopped screaming their heads off.
@hell5309 so you're saying they should've remained at the house after all which happened!? think about what you're saying dude: their daughter was sucked in the netherworld, their son was almost strangled to death by a toy clown, not to mention the whole other poltergeist episodes which are to say at the very least "disturbing". and i'm not replying to you only to say random shit but let's face it that your question is out of place.
@hell5309 its funny 'cuz you're the one who says shit even my little brother can understand and you ask useless shit even him can understand( he's 10 years old) and yet again you get offensive. get a life.
@TheWitchOvAgnesi its only a movie anyway, its not like it could happen in real life. he's got a point when he says that panic is not the same as fear but still his question is worthless...
also at 2:56 the coffins and the bodies instantly disappeared compared to 2:38 before the house imploded... i'm not trolling, anyway this movie was made 30 years ago and it still has some of the greatest horror effects ever even if you compare it to nowadays horror movies like "drag me to hell" or "friday 13th"... any reply would be welcomed...
@11MasterBlade I thought that funny when I first saw the movie...a woman hits the windshield but a man is seen on the ground. I played and froze it like 10 times and it looks like two caskets side by side coming though the door with the one closest to the camera farther out..making the other not visible...the woman looks like she's being tossed from farther back.
@CairnTerrier69 it could be that both the woman and the man were buried together 'cuz i don't see any other casket except the one which obviously came through the garage door. or another possibility would be the woman's body which was thrown with great power from inside the garage though you can obviously see that her body's not thrown from behind but like from the casket while the man's body clings to the surface.
James Karen: the ultimate bad guy. First he kicks everyone out of Walnut Grove in Little House On The Prairie, then he builds houses on top of a cemetery in Poltergeist.
I love how Steven tells Dana to get in the car and she STANDS THERE SCREAMING FOR SEVERAL MORE SECONDS. Also, while this is happening, Robbie is telling Steven to drive away and Diane is telling STEVEN to hurry. Way to look after your firstborn, guys.
@sweetness902101209 Actually they did and in the second one they are fighting them for the money, but the insurance company keeps saying something like, the house is somewhere just not there lol.
@Chevypower265 now where would the house move? that's stupid... steven should've told the insurance company that the house exploded instead of "imploding"... or he should've said that the house was destroyed in a fire... its a lot more believable story...
Your family is continuously attacked by lots of vengeful and violent spirits and demons, then the fucking house swallowed your daughter and your wife had to go save her to the land of the dead. What do you do?
Leave the place, good. But first you wait another day to try and see if you all get fucking killed.
Damn it, it's so stupid, if they could pay a motel the night the house imploded into hell, they could have paid it earlier that morning, couldn't they?
It's interesting how the supernatural entity is not an isolated incident, meaning the whole development knows and now believes in supernatural beings.
@2:03 some bruise she has on her neck; it's either a hickey or her deranged boyfriend at that time did that to her. I agree that she had some scream in this moment. *shudders*
hey uhh not sure if anyone else has ever noticed this but in one scene you see a casket knock over a vw then as the house is shooting the fireball or whatever that is....where the over turned bug should be is a truck.....
Ol girl is just standing there screaming bloody murder and the boy is all "drive away, daddy, just drive away" yeah I would just leave her there screaming since she seems content to do so.Taa taa sis...lol
If it's any consolation, Christopher Nolan loves doing his films with practical VFX rather than computer VFX. Guess how much of the VFX in The Dark Knight and Inception is and isn't computer generated.
"You son of a bitch! You moved the cemetery, but you left the bodies, didn't ya!? You son of a bitch, you left the bodies and you only moved the headstones! You-only-moved-the-headstones! Why!? Why!?!"
You know when you see a house at night with all the lights off and the TV on inside. You get the Poltergeist effect through the windows. Walk up to that house and scream "WHAT'S HAPPENING!?"
@66Metallicaman66 The real reason he done it is because it would've cost a fortune to move the bodies and he wanted to get out as cheap as possible and make as much money as he could, plus he had no respect at all for the dead. And since we seen he done it there we know he would've done it at the other Cemetery too.
@KMNKeyboardVault Only the little girl and the older sister died young in abnormal ways. Zelda Rubinstein (the medium), died this year of Old age. Also Julian Beck from the second part, but he was already dying from cancer before starting the movie, hence his creepy appareance. The rest of the main cast is alive and well. The fact that eventually, more people involved in the movie will die it's related to the fact that the movie was made almost 30 years ago. -That's- the true story.
This is the special not so edition because the colour balance is light-years off the target for DVD and bluray LOL
You should buy the region1 DVD first edition because its free from the lousy sickening colouring who ever did it, needs to be shot on sight! I did a short video showing the special edition and first edition that makes the bluray fit for a dustbin!
If you not all the (blue) which casts a (green all over the bright scene images) this is common issue now plugging consumer video products its obviously some twat-man who is colour blinded and can’t distinguish the true colour values and the director approves of it LOL I’d say they haven’t viewed the 35 or 70mm print projected first to make notes, they just rush the whole thing because there impatient greed fuckers who want our money for botched up transfer.
Probably one of the most amazing and scariest motion pictures I have ever seen. You don't need ax-murderers and screaming co-eds to make a scary movie, just a really eerie atmosphere and top-notch (non-CGI) special effects.
Greatest supernatural movie ever made ; no matter how today's movies of the same kind are full of CGI, in my opinion they never managed to reproduce the eerie atmosphere of Poltergeist.
This movie has a very convincing effect to it, largely because of the use of older special effects that are largely no longer being used in favour of computers. The use of older film technology also gives it quite an effect of it looking old, even though in a way 1982 wasn't that long ago. I would love to see the use of older special effects techniques and older film stock but I honestly don't know where or if anything along those lines is being done that way any more by anyone :(
@AlexDraco The miniature was constructed to break up quickly, and on cue. Concealed cables built into the model were attached to the furniture and window frames, and when pulled would draw them toward a large black funnel, where a powerful vacuum would ingest all the resulting debris. For added measure, Edlund and machinist Gene Whiteman were armed with pump action shotguns to blast the model into tiny bits.
The model was poised on top of the funnel, pointing up - with the camera on a scaffold above it, looking down. The 35mm camera ran at 360 frames per second, so that when shown at the proper speed, each second of real time would be slowed down to 15 seconds on the screen.
Often, after effects work on a show is over, some key models from the film are presented to the director and producer. But all that was left of the "Poltergeist" house model was a pile of debris. None the less, it was all carefully scooped out of the funnel and off the studio floor, encased in a plastic box, and sent to Spielberg.
@AlexDraco this is one of my favorite horror classic's along with The Thing and Alien's.
today's movie are kinda boring, they try too hard to scare you or they dont put enough effort into it.
SlientHill was the only recent movie to scare me, i alway's knew about the game's. but after seeing the movie i sorta hesitate to play them, and yet i play DeadSpace for fun.

@hilanderproduction Just like George Lutz did in the original AmityVille Horror. Yet.....The dog was axed by George in the remake. Why ????

If it's any consolation, Christopher Nolan loves doing his films with practical VFX rather than computer VFX. Guess how much of the VFX in The Dark Knight and Inception is and isn't computer generated.

You know when you see a house at night with all the lights off and the TV on inside. You get the Poltergeist effect through the windows. Walk up to that house and scream "WHAT'S HAPPENING!?"

Spielberg is great director.

It was SMART for that guy to build over the cemetery and just only move the headstones!
66Metallicaman66 1 year ago
@66Metallicaman66 The real reason he done it is because it would've cost a fortune to move the bodies and he wanted to get out as cheap as possible and make as much money as he could, plus he had no respect at all for the dead. And since we seen he done it there we know he would've done it at the other Cemetery too.
Chevypower265 1 year ago
@Chevypower265 Oh well. Let him be the cheap one when he has the money, XD

89Animeknight 1 year ago
@KMNKeyboardVault Only the little girl and the older sister died young in abnormal ways. Zelda Rubinstein (the medium), died this year of Old age. Also Julian Beck from the second part, but he was already dying from cancer before starting the movie, hence his creepy appareance. The rest of the main cast is alive and well. The fact that eventually, more people involved in the movie will die it's related to the fact that the movie was made almost 30 years ago. -That's- the true story.

@KMNKeyboardVault
What are you talking about? The mother A.K.A Jo Beth Williams is alive and well. The son is also alive.

EmpireLS56KW 1 year ago
If you not all the (blue) which casts a (green all over the bright scene images) this is common issue now plugging consumer video products its obviously some twat-man who is colour blinded and can’t distinguish the true colour values and the director approves of it LOL I’d say they haven’t viewed the 35 or 70mm print projected first to make notes, they just rush the whole thing because there impatient greed fuckers who want our money for botched up transfer.

Damn, and in a matter of 3 minutes, the property value of the whole neighborhood plummeted. Free fall.

Probably one of the most amazing and scariest motion pictures I have ever seen. You don't need ax-murderers and screaming co-eds to make a scary movie, just a really eerie atmosphere and top-notch (non-CGI) special effects.

LumPeyCusTerEd 2 years ago
Greatest supernatural movie ever made ; no matter how today's movies of the same kind are full of CGI, in my opinion they never managed to reproduce the eerie atmosphere of Poltergeist.
AlexDraco 2 years ago 29
This movie has a very convincing effect to it, largely because of the use of older special effects that are largely no longer being used in favour of computers. The use of older film technology also gives it quite an effect of it looking old, even though in a way 1982 wasn't that long ago. I would love to see the use of older special effects techniques and older film stock but I honestly don't know where or if anything along those lines is being done that way any more by anyone :(
DredWolfster 2 years ago 22
@DredWolfster Same here but the crew that made this movie went through A LOT of work for the special effects and now computers make it easier.

@AlexDraco The miniature was constructed to break up quickly, and on cue. Concealed cables built into the model were attached to the furniture and window frames, and when pulled would draw them toward a large black funnel, where a powerful vacuum would ingest all the resulting debris. For added measure, Edlund and machinist Gene Whiteman were armed with pump action shotguns to blast the model into tiny bits.
hardluckboogie 1 year ago 2
The model was poised on top of the funnel, pointing up - with the camera on a scaffold above it, looking down. The 35mm camera ran at 360 frames per second, so that when shown at the proper speed, each second of real time would be slowed down to 15 seconds on the screen.
hardluckboogie 1 year ago
Often, after effects work on a show is over, some key models from the film are presented to the director and producer. But all that was left of the "Poltergeist" house model was a pile of debris. None the less, it was all carefully scooped out of the funnel and off the studio floor, encased in a plastic box, and sent to Spielberg.
hardluckboogie 1 year ago
@AlexDraco this is one of my favorite horror classic's along with The Thing and Alien's.
today's movie are kinda boring, they try too hard to scare you or they dont put enough effort into it.
SlientHill was the only recent movie to scare me, i alway's knew about the game's. but after seeing the movie i sorta hesitate to play them, and yet i play DeadSpace for fun.
