on christmas week im going to steves pets and im either getting a parakeet (i already have a female parakeet) i want to get a boy (i dont care what the bird gender is ill still love them) then again i really want a cockateel but i only have 100 dallors witch bird should get?
This whole series was very informative, thank you! I'll be getting a hand-fed parakeet soon and your information and calm handling of the birds is invaluable to see and hear.
thats kind of a really bad cage number 1 its too small and it only has on tiny perch and when the parakeet is on the perch the poor Cocktail is trying to climb to get on but he cant and he has to sit on the food cup
i'm pretty sure these cages are a bit small. are they temporary? and i suggest a 30x18x18 cage. i found several on amazon for only 40 dollars. great video by the way!
@keetrolli3 If the bird will be out of the cage and playing with you a lot, I really don't worry about the size of the cage other than to have adequate room to spread wings and move around. If it will be in the cage all the time, then get the biggest cage you can afford. By the way, wide cages are much better than tall.
@animalexchange1 it is different for me though because i have chosen not to clip my birds' wings so they need some room to fly in their cage. same goes with any winged bird.
This is my opinion, but I think bird wing trimming is cruel. Birds' natural part is to fly around and enjoy being a bird, and someone comes along and "grounds" them! Birds in the wild and in captivity need to fly around. It's more natural for them. Yes, you can prevent your birdy form escaping and stuff, but how about closing doors and windows? You should take precautions as a bird owner, NOT ground your poor bird.
@MultiGodzilla2010 If you are a US resident, It is illegal for you to keep any native bird species so I suggest you redirect your attention to a parakeet , cockatiel or other permitted birds.
I reccomend against pairing budgies and cockatiels....I rescued a budgie/cockatiel combo, and the budgie had chewed off the first three joints on the poor tiel's feet! Budgies are much more....um, we'll say "intense"...than cockatiels. Tiels should only be kept with other tiels.
Of course, the previous owners should have been more vigilant as well.
Hello I am 14 and your videos have helped me care for my pets and helped me get what you need I have budgies (4) and 2 cockatiels and you have helped me find better ways to help my pets health like kicking the old dyed seeds for natural undyed seeds. You should make a video on hissing cockroach care and ferret
that cage is too small. I dont know if thats a permentant cage for them or just for now. But he could not spread his wings! Anyways, I have a parakeet that is in the middle of being trained. It still bites which hurts sooo badd. But i think tomorrow i mightt being going to petco to get another bird. I dont know if i should get another parakeet or a cockatiel. Bc i would like a bit larger bird.
@animalexchange1 my mom wouldnt let me get a cockatiel and there were plenty there, i have 2 parakeets now a the one picks of the other. my mom doesn't really care about them so she just gets whatever is cheaper.....
I absolutely love these videos! My first two parakeets died when they were 10 years old. I still miss them even after 8 years. The one I have now, Perky (Perkington Neelix) Is a handful but I love him to bits. He's six (going on 35) These videos are very informative and I love the calm and gentle nature you have. Perky and I thank you for all your help and thanks for the videos!!
@skaterdude15awful Around here up to $50 dollars.. =/ What my brother says but he and I am going to get mine from my grandmother for free since she breeds her's.. :) Depends on where you get them.
@skaterdude15awful Conures are very pretty! :) As I said depends on where you get them.. I always try to look for a breeder first anyhow.. You're lucky because we have no petco without driving a long ways. ;)
@skaterdude15awful I want a blue parakeet to be cage mates with my cockatiel if my mom will let me, and I know they sell them at Petsmart, and there are ten stores a hours away from my house I believe, I've never been to one so I'm cautious about getting one.. I saw conures on their website and they are never under
$100 and can be $500 or maybe more.. so it does depend! Lol.
@freewilly2jesse Cage size is determined both by the type of bird and how long it will be in the cage. If you have a pet budgie that is with you whenever you are home,I don't mind a small cade but if you have two little zebra finches that will be in the cage all the time, bigger is better.
I have a question. I bought a beautiful parrotlet yesterday. He's a blue male. He isn't tamed. I was wondering if you have any tips on taming him? He's adjusted pretty well. He's allowed me to hand feed him and he's perched on my finger for a quick moment, but he still nips.
Also, what treats are good for them. I saw someone feeding theirs egg whites so i did the same and he loves it. I just want to make sure it's healthy for him.

dogshot0410 7 months ago
@dogshot0410 Please look at the Animal Exchange trimming video and read the comments. I think that will help you realize how important trimming is.
animalexchange1 5 months ago
@dogshot0410 Looking at the big picture, you're actually 'splitting hairs' when you ask whether or not it's 'nice' to trim a bird's wings.
"So that once again this parakeet won't be able to fly".. so basically it can't survive in the wild anymore. Enjoy your little cage bird.
PS the taxidermy parakeet in the background is hilarious

@fh1564838 It's best to let them get acquainted on neutral territory first and then put them in a cage big enough for a cockatiel.
