To his friends early on, he was "Fritz." (Heck, I choose that myself over Frederick Russell if I was simply looking to get accepted by the other kids in the neighborhood.)
A delightful "game,' thanks to Ahmad's devilish streak and Gary's willingness (and ear) to play along. (Gary always tended to enjoy be the guy in charge and having complete control, making his attempt to accommodate Ahmad (real name: Fritz Jones) all the more rare. Music is exactly this: it's about "play."
I might not have understood the concept, but I got the impression that gary was supposed to fill in all the brakes. But really the whole piece has such an addicting groove !.
Awesome performance. I love the way that Jamal and Burton trade "comping" duties without so much as a look. True musical ESP by real heavyweight jazz masters. I have wondered for years what this Burton-Jamal collaboration was like and I see it is amazing & swings hard.
No Doubt, I am the writer of this song "ONE {AHAD}" I have been blessed work on a lot of music and in my opinion he the most profound artist of all p.s. I am looking for the original 20 century l.p. - SIGIDI
Always great to see the interaction among the group, Jamal's trio has aways been very cohesive, flexible, can stop on a dime when needed and keep on charging as the moment hits them. This has been one of my favorites over the years as Burton had to fit himself in with the group and he sounds as if he had been playing with them for years instead of just sitting in with the for that performance. the video is well worth viewing even if the first brief portion is missing. NICE!
Anytime...I had the LP many years ago...I checked on the spelling and it is definitely Sabu Adeyola on bass and Payton Crossley on drums. Always wondered what Jamal was saying during the tune, he was introducing the members of the group.
Certian parts of this song (example 2:45) remind me of an MMW song: "End of the world party". If you go to amazon and hear the 30 sample, you'll hear the similarity. Its so cool. I wish MMW could go back in time and play that part of the song along with them. Anyway, Love the sweet sounds.
on which recording can i find this beauty called "one" or is just a live version? i think i know an jamal track called one but without the great vibes.
I have this recording: Ahmad Jamal/Gary Burton in Concert, 1981...its from the 1981 MIDEM music industry convention in Cannes, France..."Personal Choice Records" uhmmm PC-51004 if that helps at all
There are several versions of the audio CD at Amazon with various names, all of them containing the words 'In Concert', but I'm not sure which one would be the best.
Did you mean the video? If so, what's the name or call number?

Who are the bass and drums?
mikebass14 4 years ago
Peyton Crossley is the drummer, I think and Sabu Adeyola the bassist..pardon the mis-spellings, I'll look it up and correct it if I can.

Ahmad Jamal is funky brova #1. He plays it like it is. No foolin' 'round, ohhhh yes. Seriously headlocked by tight jazz music.

Is that Yurol Israel on kit?...Gary is such a master of the vibes.

That's Payton Crossley playing drums. He played with Jamal for about five years in the late 70's and early 80's. I got this video recorded in France.
