  • well they say that cat stevens was copied by satch and then satch was copied by coldplay however the only two that sound exactly the same pretty much are satch and coldplays. cat stevens version sounds alot different than the other two

  • Coldplay... Great performers but let's be honest. They rip off songs worse than Zepplin who basically ripped off their entire first album.

Must be some british tradition of 'honor'

  • They're not even kind of alike. You wanna put a stop to all music sounding the same? Find that fucking drum machine that's being used by every piece of R'n'B 'music' currently infesting the charts and cut the fucking plug off it.

  • its the LAST PART OF COLDPLAYS SONG!! HAHA NOT THE BEGINNING! .. its identically the same... no one can say he didnt steal it .. Foreigner Suite is an EPIC!

  • bullshit

  • two notes are the same big deal....

  • the two songs don't really sound anything like. only by a long stretch of the imagination are they similar. :/

  • @superclaydude Cat steven's song sounds more like If i could fly than viva la vida does to either...

  • Can you seperate and re-post both songs complete so I can enjoy both songs individually. They are both great songs.

  • siamo nel 2011....è normale che con tutte le canzoni che si sono create fino ad oggi ce ne sia qualcuno di simile...è impossibile pensare ad armonie infinite...lol

  • I can hear a couple of similarities between Viva La Vida and Satriani's song - they should give him a credit, but this? There is no real similarity. If this goes any further, next time there will be a case of an artist claiming someone has used the same set of notes (not melody) that he/she used previously.

  • no

  • THIS BAND COPYING EVERTHING AND EVERYBODY

  • Yusuf Islam's music is better than Coldplay

  • The two songs sound nothing alike. . .

  • @MrXCalibur54 lol that is what I was thinking, but perhaps I just don't have musically trained ears or something haha

  • @MrXCalibur54 yes they do ... your listening to the wrong parts ... its mainly that the lyrics from coldplay match the pitch of the piano note

  • Yusuf Islam isn't suing he doesn't care about the money it's the principal. Now The Stones should be the ones who should be ashamed for ruining Bitter Sweet Symphony.

  • are you kidding me? Cat stevens needs to go back and cry to his mom. along with joe satriani. it pisses me off so much when artists are just in it for the money and cant be happy that another band likes a certain beat that they used. and Cat stevens was really reaching for it here. he actually is more of a dick than satriani because at least theres some similarity

  • No real similarity.

  • Well... those are nothing alike. Thanks.

  • cat stevens didnt sue! he never even said they copied. he just sound it sounded the same

  • Coldplay is made in China in fakes factory.

  • Cat Stenvens' song reminds me of some other song..Ibo-lele?

  • but you can't copyright chord changes or rhythms. otherwise look at all the jazz tunes that would have been caught in litigation. you can only copyright melody, and that's what this case 'tween satch and CP went down to. was the melody the same? The beatles would have been S.O.L. had anyone been able to sue based on the chord changes they used, but they used unique melodies. I hope that makes sense

  • Nahhh!

  • cat stevens needs to shut up. Joe satirani has every right though

  • @GearsOfWar12 you dont know what u say... please wacht this video =G57CgtX-BsI they are the originals ENANITOS VERDES fuck Satriani fuck Coldplay

  • @GearsOfWar12 cat stevens is way better, you should give him a try

  • @GearsOfWar12 cat stevens didnt even sue or anything he just said it sounded the same. he did not take action,i dont know about joe satirani...did he try to sue? i dont even know who he is lol

  • @loveablemeggy joe did, because well... it was practically the same exact song. look up If I could fly by joe satriani. same exact tempo and everything

  • @GearsOfWar12 yeah i do agree with you there. i looked it up and wow very similar. but someone on the wall said the money he got he gave it away to charity or something so that was nice of him :)

  • @loveablemeggy yea he is a good guy :)

  • @GearsOfWar12 yeah sorry if i was a tad dramatic. i love cat stevens, thats why lol.

  • @loveablemeggy it's all good. my ignorance kicked it, because I'm not a fan :3

  • @GearsOfWar12 and that is okay :) i can be so pushy haha :D

  • Respond to this video... in*

  • similar? kind of. the same? of course not. thousands of artists use the same chord progressions and even similar melody lines, it's western music, there's not too many millions of options. and besides, why isn't satriani being accused of ripping off cat stevens then? the whole thing is so stupid, and i find it rather crazily suspicious that there is only a big deal about coldplay's biggest, most money-making song. people are stupid

  • @TyTyMcBerg Cat Stevens said he doesn't want to sue Satriani. Not to mention Coldplay has been accused of ripping off several other songs. They are band of plagiarists, they don't deserve the fame they have

  • Cat Stevens is far more talented.

  • I'm guessing Cat's back smoking a lot of pot again. You'd have to be pretty high to see even a vague similarity between the two songs. Not even close!

  • @draesonh They are simply not in the same key... but the main melody is obviously similar !

  • Comment removed

  • @draesonh cat stevens/yusuf islam is a better artist though. so i think the cold play lovers are the ones who are on drugs, but thats just my opinion lol

  • Steven Demetre Georgio, Cat Steven, and now Yusuf Islam??? Get it together man!! I dont believe anything out of your mouth anymore!!!!

  • @teppie3000 for one thing he chose cat stevens for a stage name,he didnt legally change it until he changed his faith and dropped his music career for almost 20 years and then he started playing again for charity works and has won many awards for being a activist for world peace. sorry im a cat stevens lover :)

  • Cat Stevens is a joke for flat out saying they stole from him. Sorry but he's not the means and ends to all music because he's been in it longer than them. If the tracks sound similar, big deal. With all the music released from day 1 there is bound to be similar sounds.

  • @Range341 He never did say he stole the song, he just said they sounded similair when he commented about Satriani suing Coldplay. He didn't sue them either

  • @Range341 he didnt sue or get mad he just made a comment about it. that joe satriani guy actually sued cold play

  • I dont understand how like 5 people can claim one song ripped off their song. If they truly did rip off cat stevens, wouldnt that mean joe satrianis song plagiarized cat stevens? There had to have been an original, in which case, all the other plagiarisms are irrelevant.

  • @TN1Ox XSatriani song is a copy from an argentina band called "Enanitos verdes"...

  • they dont sound anything like each other

  • It's not the progression that matters, it's the melody of the song (which seems to get cut quickly the first time through). But I think Cat Stevens has a case here. The melody is the same. Coldplay better settle if they know what's good for them. As for people complaining about musician upholding their copyrights - clearly that's not what you do for a living, but tell you what, why don't you let me profit off your ideas and not pay you. Cool? Cool.

  • @gfink2 well cat stevens didnt even sue or said they copied,he just said it sounded the same. that joe satriani sued cold play though. it just tells you who is the better man...

  • the only reson they do that is because no one can come up with they're own stuff anymore

  • This Video Should Be Called "Cat Steven VS A-Ha : Take On Me."

  • @DavidEbenedict Yeah but nobody gives a shit about A-Ha anymore, so whatever :-)

  • The songs sound exactly the same.

  • shut up... cat stevens' song is older than satriani's... you should listen to good music for a change!

  • why does coldplay have to steal everything

  • i was humming that shit before i even heard ether of them, who do i got to sue to get $500,000,000. all musicians want is money these days

  • I think that in modern days is to easy to make musics that are like old ones (why plagiarize Joe Satriani AND Cat Steavens?just think about it)

  • "This does not mean coldplay is not a brilliant bad" Who the **** said they were a brilliant band? That's a statement. Please do not mistake your opinion for fact. they have said themselves they plagiarize, as seen in another claim of Coldplay copying someone on this same song.

  • next up: Coldplay vs My mom

  • COULD YOU ALL STOP FUCKING AROUND ITS A BASCI SCALE.

  • wtf they dont sound nearly close enough

  • This does not mean coldplay is not a brilliant bad, it just means they know where genius can be found. And they have plenty of genius that will be copied as well!

  • Give me a brea,k why do u think disney movies, along with all the renditions of every 80s' horror flick is remade, because one time genius can always sell to the next generation. This logic extends to the reason the philosopher santayana stated those who don't know history r condemned to repeat it, when a stimuls from any medium is profitable or influential, the new generation, usually not exposed because of some sad lethargy or lack of aptitude, responds the same way the prior generation did.

  • Since "Foreigner's Suite" is far and away the first I'd say Cat's the one that's been robbed.

  • sounds more like Bad Romance by Lady Gaga

  • Cat Stevens, Joe Satriani, Mario. Who did Coldplay not steal this song from?

  • Thats right! Even the guitar is the same!

  • COLD PLAY SUCKS

  • When did Cat Stevens take on the eerie appearance of an Amish Richie Havens?

  • Coldplay isnt mainstream. even if it has Billions of fans world wide this doesnt make Coldplay's music mainstream. Also if I have to compare all songs ever recorded since 1920 i'd be able to "have artists" sue eachother.

You try to come up with a tune and not think of another tune.

I agree i see similarities here with This muslim but hey. Joe Satriani released his first yes? He should sue them first :)

  • @MichaelSLify "Coldplay isnt mainstream. even if it has Billions of fans world wide this doesnt make Coldplay's music mainstream." Thanks for dropping that dud on us. Coldplay is indeed mainstream because, as noted in other comments, their music is simple, easily accessible, emotionally watered down, and safe. Is it for me? Fuck no. Is it for my coworker who buys awful new CDs (what a fuckin' shitty format) every week and thinks "War Pigs" is an Ozzy Osbourne song? Yes.

  • lol XD this is getting ridiculous. That sounded NOTHING, and I repeat NOTHING like Viva la Vida. Fuck you Cat Stevens, whoever the fuck you are. Nobody.

  • @CoN0R115 It doesn't sound like a copy, but nothing? Come on.

  • he gives a shit, Coldplays is soooooooo much better than Cat's and Joe's!!!

But Joe's was better than Cat's. Coldplay is amazing<333

  • @CarleyCastro Well then, it's ok, you can steal it if you make a better version of it. I guess everyone forgot that part of the law.

  • @kevinskogg lol good point

  • THEY ALL DA SAME!!! THERE SO MANY!!! AHHHHHHHH!!!

  • joe satriani was first

so now 2 people stole satrianis song..

  • @XxTorrentWolfxX

Cat Stevens was first .. then Satriani ..

  • I think Joe Satriani has a better argument than Cat Stevens.

  • Marty Balin - Hearts

    Cadillacs & Dinosaurs Staff Roll

  • he's suing over a common chord progression and a 4 note sequence. Didn't satriani already fail at this?

  • Hahaha nice one.

(just to confirm: this was a satirical joke, wasn't it?)

  • Cat Stevens song is better than both Satriani and Coldplay

  • great now yusuf islam stole from satriani, too?

  • Bad comparison.. its the voice of that guy from coldplay that is exactly the same melody as the piano piece of cat stevens.. not the melody of the song from coldplay.. just the melody from the vocals..

  • nah cold play is innocent on this one.

  • Next up: Joe Satriani vs Cat Stevens.

  • @LOL4TehWinz

let's just say Cat and Coldplay are good and stach is pretty much a boring, generic guitar player with no soul

  • @THFCWeHateArsenal I'd agree the fact that a washed up guitar player with no meaning anymore decided to have one last blowout by sueing a really big band of the present day jsut shows how pathetic he is, especially when he copied melodies and such off other artists. Like come on, get over it.

  • @THFCWeHateArsenal You can call him boring, but no soul? Have you seen him play live? He doesn't stand there like a fucking fool. He puts his gut into that shit.

  • Most of rock music in general is based off of chord progressions that have been used by thousands of artists over and over. In my opinion you have to look at the songs entire composition. The chord progression is basically the same but the songs sound nothing like eachother when heard next to eachother. A lot of popular artists today only use G, C, D, E, A, Am, F to write their songs but compose around simple rythmic progressions by adding other instruments. That said, Coldplay sucks.

  • @LOL4TehWinz doubt it.

  • @Shaftsus Its a joke man.....

  • @LOL4TehWinz damn i don't get it : (

  • bit of a stretch. Satriani's version is too close though

  • Como se les ocurre que se van a parecer estas canciones,

la de Cat, Enanitos verdes, Satriani y Coldplay se parecen sólo en unos acordes, porque no se dedican a otra cosa mejor....

  • No. I don't like coldplay but at least he doesn't sound like elevator music.

  • @GhostOfAE Youre an asshole

  • @CurtisHalfHalf Haha, just voicing my opinion. To my ears, it really does sound like elevator music. If you can't deal with that then that's your problem.

  • @GhostOfAE Youre nothing but an elevator son of a bitch...the next time you ride an elevator make sure and press the H button, that means it'll take you right to HELL...good luck to you, you bastard..

  • @CurtisHalfHalf You just showed me that all you're looking for is a fight, and you won't get one from me. Have a nice day.

  • @GhostOfAE This "CurtisHalfHalf" fella's a bit of a dick... ¬_¬

  • @CurtisHalfHalf "Helipad"

  • @GhostOfAE Lol I agree. Just remove vocals and some complex parts and there you go.

  • I don't think this holds as much weight as Satriani's claims. The first riff from "If I Could Fly" is definitely ripped off.

  • ok does like everyone who plays music copy this damn melody

When you realise Chris Martin not only nicks music : essentially this was from Cat Stevens who based it on the sounds of Jethro Tull, when you see 'Jethro Tull flute solo you realise Chris Martin has nicked Ian Andersons identiy, not only his music style, but his jacket and his hair and the way he throws himself around the stage.. Chris has modeled himself on Ian Anderson from Jethro Tull. Nuff said..

  • nope sorry,

I really love cat steven's music, he is so sweet. But the song is very very different...

It's not the same with the case of satriani, both songs are pretty similar!!

i do like the three of them. my mom loves cat stevens in her childhood, and the same did i. when i was a teenager i love coldplay songs, and some of them now too. and my brother show me satriani... and i like him very much, so you see, I'm very objetive!

  • troll

  • Lacking of talent they turn towards copyright. Can you imagine a court case "The Estate of Mr Thomas Thallis vs. Ralph Vaughan Williams"?

  • @TheFactoryOfLight Neither Satriani nor Stevens lack talent.

  • this one not copied either like off of joe satriani this is stupid because playing that plagirism card its stupid and its not working so stop saying its copied its not

  • So many songs spring to mind after hearing this one. This plagiarism thing has gone too far. People are just looking to take money from those more successful than them. It's wrong.

  • Cat Stevens sounds a bit like Bad Romance by Lady Gaga - well, the other way!

  • holy crap ! listen to the last time Cat Steven music is played in this video . It sounded so much like Bad Romance from Lady GaGa, the piano part !

  • o wow the basic melody is similar they still turned it into a completely different song joe sataroni has the same melody enimetos verdes does too that beat is popular 4 songs only one made it big big deal cold plays version was just better than the others

  • same progression only...I cannot believe how people like to claim a progression as their own. the songs are completely different. Lame musicians who try to claim Viva la Vida is like their song. Even Satch is full of crap

  • who would want to copy this crap any ways its just a popular melody so actually i don't c why to sue????

  • Why would anybody WANT to copy Cat Stevens ????

  • @bahashawa1 What d u think? Cat Stevens was the bigger folk music and guitar music.

Respect who created a kind of music. Coldplay???

  • fuck ur mom u uploader!! doesnt make sense!

  • hey, I love Cat Stevens and Coldplay. So what if Coldplay found inspiration in Stevens wonderful song "Foreigner Suite"... who cares, it's beautiful music!

  • @sarauss who cares is the artist

  • Fail!

  • honestly if nobody "copied" peoples music, then there would be such little music in the entire world

  • @Tomko401 yeah cus not everyone are douchebags like coldplay

  • Haha oh cummon he had a album coming out at the time. Of course he's going to hop on this band wagon.. Anyway, Cat Stevens didn't even sue. Logically one could say he knew it wasn't the same but wanted the press.

  • how so stupid

    everybody copy everybody

while there sueing each other were

downloading there songs for free lol

  • no lo se ... la musica contemporanea es muy parecida ... la musica a cambiado mucho a lo largo del tiempo ...

  • lol there's no way you can sue for that...I'm saying this even though I resent Coldplay for stealing Satriani's song...

  • Yeah, been a while since I studied Muzik ! but.... um....

yeah.... well.... now that I start to listen... Ok. Definitely feel the connection.

Cat has an a more ornamented version of melodic progression due to his skilled musical capabilities. Cold Play have a basic rhythm style that they have adhered too.

OK. VARIED, BUT VERY, VERY SIMILAR.

Advisable not to copy another artists core pattern.

  • Ok boys, chill... I agree that there is an ENORMOUS resemblance but guys,... Cant Coldplay be inspired by Cat?

Ok, it seems that they love been inspired (Satriani, Emanitos verdes, Frances Limon,...and maybe more - -' ) but their songs are good. And Im not a coldplay fan anyway. I think they took the best of these songs to TRY to do better songs for us(and money :P) I disagree calling them stolers.

  • COPY CATS!!!!!!

  • Coldplay are a young, modern, exploding, futuristic, upbeat band.

Cool Cat is a Musical Genius of Originality, Powerful Lyrics, with a versatility in playing all musical instruments and producing Timeless Tunes.

Arpeggios in Sad lisa and Morning Has Broken

show musical diversity , imagination and high creativity.

  • "if the ripped version turns out better than the original, then the original should be replaced by the ripped version and the original writer should have to pay a penalty to the new writer"

    - chris martin

  • whats fascinating about all these claims of plagiarism is that the modern "versions" of these copied songs are usually stripped down. this makes me wonder why mainstream music had become some minimalistic... is the general public getting dumber, can we not bother with a more technical piece of music. For example in 1977 you had "Hotel California" at number 1 of the billboard charts... I believe Black eyed peas had "I got a feeling" topped the charts in 2010, WTF?

  • @StStu yeah humanity gets dumber and dumber

  • @StStu yeah... in the past everything was so great and everything new is shit...

does e.g. "a horse with no name" mean anything to you? "On 19 January 1972 it peaked at #1 in the US for 3 weeks"

  • se parece igual que con la de satriani pero PUTA toquen juntos y van a ganar mas plata que con peleas weonas

  • there are similarities

not enough to call it plagiarism

as much as i like cat steven and hate coldplay

  • what?? where´s the symilarities??

  • @dogmiagy

You're kidding right? Don't respond, that was a rhetorical question. What I don't get is people like you that do not have any clue about Music. I'm not claiming I'm the best but at least I can hear it. Try listening to it again and again. You might want also want to compare these to Enanitos Verdes and Frances Limon or Joe Satriani.

  • NO SIMILAIRITY

  • @TheSLSAMG you kidding dude? just in a different key, using differnt intervals the music theory behind it is practically exactly the same

  • I dont think Satriani should have sued..... all of the original songs have already been written haha i mean listen to most of the music from the last 10 years, and compare it to the music from 20 to 30 years ago, the new stuff is trash because all of the good music has already been written

  • @fucia11 I agree with you. There's nothing else to be written. But I will try to make the change, create something new and make some succes. Remember my words, someday I'll be great!

  • That doesn't sound similar to me. Joe Satriani's does.

  • Here's a demonstration I do in my copyright class. Pull up the videos of Coldplay, Satriani (2004), Enenitas Verdes song 'Frances Limon' (2002), Marty Balin's song 'Hearts' (#8 on Billboard charts in 1981), and finally Cat Stevens' 20 minutes of noodling from 1973. There's certainly enough material to discuss similarity and access here.

Copyright is likely headed for another major revision in the next few years.

  • joe's is more legit... :P

  • nah.

  • nah.

  • nah..

  • Are there similarities? Yes. Would it hold up in court? No. Copyright law requires that you prove substantial similarity. This fails in my opinion. The second criteria is access. Did Coldplay have access to the Cat Stevens song? The section of similarity happens about 16 minutes into the Cat Stevens song. Not many 20 minute songs make it to radio. The Cat Stevens song is from 1973. Chris Martin wasn't even alive until 1977 so unless his parents were avid Cat Stevens fans I remain unconvinced.

  • @audacitymedia

The last part of your statement was incorrect. It doesn't matter if he was alive during the Cat Stevens song or not. Lots of people have been influenced by old artists and songs. Also, he could have heard it somewhere (bar, friends house, etc) and forgot about it.

This really doesn't have enough similarities as the Joe Satriani song. Sure the chords are the same but if its being compared to Joe's song in terms of similarity, his song is more similar to Viva la Vida.

  • @Randope121

I don't know that incorrect is true. Just because a song is in existence does not necessarily mean that you have had access to it. The courts would need to determine if access had occurred. This is how George Harrison lost the 'He's So Fine/My Sweet Lord' case. In that case the court deemed that Harrison had unintentionally infringed based on the two criteria. So my second point is merely an opinion, not a statement of fact.

  • @audacitymedia

YES. Just because a song is in existence doesn't necessarily mean that you have had access to it. But you could have access to it right? You last statement sounds like, "If his parents are not Cat Stevens fans it impossible he could've heard it." Just a little fix to your statement.

BTW, Youtube sucks for their character limiter

  • His guitar is burning?

  • As a writer we say there are only 9 plots in the world. We switch the elements of those plots to form our stories, but there are only nine. In music, there are only a certain number of chords. The progression may sound similar, but it's not the same song. Sorry, Cat. Close, but no.

  • I just dont hear it......sorry....and Im a die hard Cat Stevens fan....

  • Yeah the only similarity is the chord progression. So many songs use this chord progression it's not even worth comparing all of them.

  • Blatantly copying off someone is one thing, but been inspired by other music is another. Cat should be pleased someone is trying to be original when we have so many cover versions out there.

  • LOL SERIOUSLY... this sounds nothing alike... people need to get a life!!! it just shows how pathetic and envious they are of other artists

  • why doesnt cat stevens and satriani fight it out and leave coldplay the fuck alone..

  • How about...

Coldplay vs. Smashing Pumpkins? (Listen to "Disarm" and then "Viva la Vida")

  • wow

people are really envy of Coldplay's success with Viva La Vida. lol. pathetic.

  • You've got to be kidding me, it sounds NOTHING like it... lol

  • Cat Stevens FTW Coldplay sucks monkeyfuck

  • idem idem

  • To be honest, its probably a similar chord progression more than anything else.
