Oddly this video helps me get back to a beret made of mercerized thread which I started many decades ago (but still want it done for my daughter). It is supposed to have a huge lacy flower on top and chains webbing to fill the rest to the thin rim. Beret lays flat like a pancake, opening rim of 23", diam. when flat about 12", looks a bit french.., slightly starched would be good. Can you help me? Thanks, Teresa, for reading me.
Hi, Teresa! I have JUST discovered your tutorials and I cannot begin telling you how much I like them! Nice, slow, lots of repetitions, it is almost like drilling it into our heads. But I am writing you this note to tell you that you pronounced the name "Bruges" correctly (more or less like 'brew-dges'). It is a town in Belgium, about an hour or so by train away from Antwerp, famous for the lacework that the ladies do. I made notes of lots of your tips, they are awesome!
Teresa, I bought a pull over sweater (knitted by cotton- in shell stitch pattern) in a charity organization. But the top of the sweater is too loose and wide (round shape). I want to crochet a lace edge to the top of the sweater (don't want to be too sexy). Do you have a pattern for the edging ??
I like the way you hold your lead thread. I hope I can master that instead of the way I was taught. It seems very beneficial to holding the working piece in many types of crochet.
very nice I am looking to make a round rose and turn it into a 42 in round table cloth any ideas how and where I can find this pattern here in my town it does not have anything but it does not have many craft books.
I love the look of this. All your videos have been wonderful so far. I am only just starting but one day would like to design and make things like this...but what do you make it with? Is it thread? very fine or special type of yarn? And what sizes of hook would you recommend for finer doily work?
@redfoxyk Thank you. I use crochet cotton/thread to make the doily. The common sizes are 10, 20 and 30. You can use steel crochet hooks ranging in sizes from 0-12. These numbers are not the same as the numbers on the aluminum hooks.
i made a pattern doily with and experienced level pattern with this bruges style of crochet. it has to be the most challenging thing i have ever made.
I just had a question on how you attached each piece. The lacy work in between each piece. I am in the process of making a lacy doily but don't know how to fill in the big spaces with the lacy look. If you could help me it would be soooo appreciated. Thank you! and keep up the WONDERFUL work!
The lace that you have on the left hand side that looks like a circle with the spiral design in it, can you please show me or tell me how you did it? My boyfriend wants me to make a blanket with that as the design. Is there anyway you could teach me. Please?
Thank you for posting this Teresa!! One question: Can you show how to or explain how you did the decrease or the "curve in the opposite direction" as you called it? Thanx!
It is really easy to do. You chain 3, and then put your hook through the previous loops. I will use 6 as the example. Once you have ran your hook through the 6 loops, pull your thread through, chain 3 and continue on with your double crochet. You are doing half of your chain 6, picking up the loops you want to join, finish your chain 6.
Thank you. It is hard to know because I am not around people speaking crochet terminology so I have a hard time with some of the language that may have come from another country.
Bruges Lace can be used anywhere that you would like to use it. I saw a doily last week made completely of Bruges Lace, nothing else. It was very elegant. I was actually going to add more to my piece after I added the Bruges Lace but then I realized that I was almost out of my drab(stained) thread so I decided that was where I will end it. I am still working on it, slowly.
I used chain 6 to get up to my next row. In some of the curved places on my example, I did a chain 3, then a double crochet in the joining motif, Chain 3, then continue on with my bruges lace edging. You control what direction you want your lace piece to go. With the doily that I have finished at the start of the video, there are circles with that one. The bookmarker is a curvy S shape.
I was wondering if you could make a clip tutorial from the begining/start with this style..I would like to learn how to make either curtains or a table cloth and I think this style of crocheting would be perfect for either curtains or table cloths..
With common stitches and shapes like a circle or Bruges lace, the chances are really great that someone else has already created it hundreds or thousands of years ago. You can actually create a unique pattern using Bruges Lace that no one else has created. I have seen some doily's that are really interesing.
I don't have a video on the people. It is supposed to be an adult holding the hand of a child but my adult is squished right now. It should not be so squished (Hopefully) once I get it starched and shaped. My thought process for the people came from watching the Summer Olympics and the clipart abstract people they used for each event. I decided to make some abstract crochet people.
I have to say that this piece is fabulous!!! I have such a hard time being creative with crochet.. I stick so rigidly to the pattern! Why can't I be more creative and do some freeform? I really want to! You are amazing!
Thank you. When I was first learning, I had a tendency to go "by the book." Once you understand the basics, anything goes. Just a few days ago I saw a woman who made crochet purses in the shape of steaks. I have also seen crochet cupcakes. Think outside the box. It is very rewarding to create something that is one of a kind.
You are so right. I used to rigidly stick to the patterns too, but now I seldom pick up my pattern books anymore and just "do my own thing". Thanks for the video. You're are a crochet master!!!
I just added a very unique butterfly to my crochet blog tonight. You might like it. I didn't create it until after I started edging my freeform piece. I may find a way to get this butterfly (in thread) on it. I will be adding a flower to my blog tomorrow. I put a lot of patterns on my crochet blog that are not posted here on Youtube.
Thank you. Yes, I just made each motif and then added an extra edging of a chain or picot to each individual piece so they can be easily added to each other.
Your talent makes me cry in awe and amazement. Your talent is incredible and you use it beautifully.

whats the size of your crochet needle
ilovemusicakasaby 5 months ago
@ilovemusicakasaby I would have been using around a size 5-7 steel crochet hook. This is a different sizing then the aluminum hooks.

Hi Teresa....I don't like the number 6 so with that being said can I substitute it with 7 for this pattern?
FELIZEVEE 9 months ago
@FELIZEVEE You can use 5 or 7.
tjw1963 9 months ago
Your pronunciation is correct. It means Brussels in Belgium. There is a funny movie with Colin Ferrrell and Dennis Gleason called "In Bruges" judy

Do you have to startin the middle with a pattern and then use the Bruges lace as an edging?..
How can I infuse the Bruges lace to any pattern?..
