I really love Rich's solo in this tune he has that choppy style that is so recognizable... he was not a player with blazing speed but he always phrased his solos extremely well.
This was the last great Kansas track. Vinyl Confessions was the end of a great era. Crossfire is one of my Top 10 favorite Kansas tracks despite the lack thereof in the Steve Walsh department.
Excellent band,i love their songs Play the game tonight, Chasing Shadows. Together with old Asia(albums Asia and Alpha) my favourite progressive, melodic rock bands
The writing on Vinyl Confessions and Drastic Measures were very good. John Elefante was an excellent replacement for Walsh. There were many interviews for a keyboardist when Walsh had his hissyfit. The band chose Elefante. He does a great job on vocals especially on Dust In the Wind and Carry On Wayward Son. Kerry did a lot of songwriting with the band from it's early days. He eventually went of to form a band called AD. Elefante ended up writing and producing Petra amongst other bands.
By this time Livgren,Ehart and Hope were solid Born Again Christians and Elefante was a logical choice musically and theologically to replace Walsh.I wonder if Williams and Steinhart uncomfortable?
Pan, walsh almost left when he didn't like the song selection on the live album but it was during the recording sessions for this album that he walked off and said he can't sing those lyrics. The band decided to call a meeting to discuss the matter and walsh didn't show just left a message that he was leaving..
It's understandable; if you listen to the lyrics, they are about becoming "born-again," and if you aren't a born-again Christian, you might not feel comfortable singing the lyrics. Livgren felt uncomfortable playing "Dust in the Wind" after he became born-again because of the nihilistic lyrics.
Walsh left because of the born-again Christian lyric content. Kansas had already given in to Walsh's demands for more of his own songs on Monolith and AudioVisions, and Walsh wrote some pretty weak material on those albums, both of which didn't sell as well as POKR.
what are you talking about?! His stuff on Monolith was great! AV wasn't great, but Monolith is a completely different story... Away From You is fantastic...
Steve quit the band while recording POKR because they weren't as receptive to his writing. It actually made for a GREAT recording of Dust in the Wind because he recorded that song just as he quit, so he was probably feeling really sad/somber.
Look at the # of tunes he wrote for Monolith and Audio Visions; Away from You and Angels Have Fallen are Okay, but not as good as anything Livgren wrote. Perhaps those albums didn't sell as well b/c Livgren ran out of hits.
This is a great song. Check out the odd timing in the middle. It's so subtle that it's great. Plus the violin section in the middle is like another world. Elefante is great on this song in particular.
John Elefante was very good replacement for Walsh. They don't sound exactly identical, but there qualities in Elefante's voice that are very Walsh-like.
Ever heard the source videotape of this live version? It's in stereo; Rich's guitar is in one channel and Kerry's guitar is in the other. And it doesn't help that this site doesn't offer very good sound reproduction. I like this version much better than the studio version.
