Life of a Volunteer Firefighter

i am a 18 year old volunteer from louisiana and i would just like to everyone else who is one.that we are a close brotherhood and i would just like to say thank y'all .

I have been a volunteer firefighter for a year and 3 months today i have loved every bit of it and it helped me get over my fear of heights when i had to look over a 35ft bluff at the fire below and when people say yall are my heroes I say the only firefighters that are heroes are the ones that died while on duty like on 9/11 at the World Trade Center

im a junior and i get to go on any kind of call we get wheather its a working structure car wreck hazmat or even car fires.

I am a junior FF and even though I can't go on calls for another 3 years, it is the most fun I've ever had. I love this job and I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world!!

that is exactly how i feel if your doin it for the money your doin it for the wrong reason. i have been one for three years and i love the feeling it gives you to help people out with whatever emergency they have.

not all volunteer dept need EMT. We don't . another agency runs medical. All we do is fire.

@heatwave2012 New Bern (eastern) NC. Its the norm here. Some FD's have medical capabilities but they are separate entities, you don't have to do that part if you don't want to. Our local hospital handles the medical for the county and two other surrounding counties. My own dept has a first responder unit, but I'm not part of it. They respond but the hospital transports. One county runs one EMT unit completely separate for the whole county, while there are 14 FD's in the county.

@tugboat1995 yea im from janesville wisconsin and around here most FD's have an ambulance and most of the paramedics are also firefighters so the do what they are assigned that day

No I'm Egyptian Live in Egypt and wanna to be a fireman in US to gain experience and have a job that I love.

so is this any way to volunteer or work in US fire service or civil defense by Immigration or Work visa?

you could move here to a place with a volunteer fd NOT A BIG CITY and most if not all paid depts require you to be a us citizen

Depends how old you are. Best is and (what im doing is) Im in highschool, and in a fire cadet program so once i graduate i dont need to go in the fire core. But once i graduate this year i will either join the military as a firefighter for the airforce, then after 4 years become a volunteer and get a degree in fire science. Or once i graduate, skip the military and just go straight into volunteering and getting my degree. Those are all really good things that will help alot.

ok well first of all you want to get your EMT, that stands for emergency medical technition, than you want to get involved with a local fire dept. than while your doing that go to paramedic school than a fire academy, than when your 21 you volunteer on an ambulance for 6 months and than your ready to apply for fire jobs. the main thing you want is all your medic schooling cause firefighters go on a lot of medic calls and you want to get as much training in like a reserve program, good luck!!!

@ACDCman1727 here is a HINT: they call it volunteer firefighting for a reason. im a volunteer ff in eastern ky and i dont get paid (but then again i dont do it for money). thats the problem we have out here nowadays.... nobody wants to volunteer because they wont get paid for it. i got 20 vff in my department BUT it is the same 6 people who show up for every call (me and 5 others). the other 14 just show up if it makes them look good (parades, fundraisers, community gettogethers, etc....).

@coolman14150 we have full time paid firefighters 9 on at a time but there are still alot of room for the vollys.... but the vol. dont really do anything sad to say but its true so i go to the paid guys alot. But they look down on vol. but some of them are alright
