It is fascinating to look at the pictures and see how Elton has changed over the years. In some he is devilishly handsome, and in others he looks a right wally. As ever, the most important thing is the quality of his music and in that respect he is a true master, and rightfully sits among the best composers and performers of all times.
the basques became the etruscans in italy(the etruscans founded rome n schooled romans all the romans knew) also the ancient egyptians n the ancient british...n we are still around in the basque country..yet up til recently no one knew who the basques were...we freakin settled europe ffs....all of this is a well kept secret...but its comin out baby....it sure is.....ill see to it
Why has there only been 800,00 hits of this song? It is Elton John's best as far as I am concerned. Everyone who likes this song needs to play it daily. Let's get it over a million hits!!! Very well put together ShesaFrozenFire!
@4:06 I bet someone can answer this question for me.. what other artist/song is that riff from? It's nearly note-for-note with another classic-rock song that's stuck on the tip of my tongue. I know it's probably an Elton original but who borrowed it?
This is the first time I've listened to this song. Ive listened to the Dream Theater cover since i was about 14 (now 21) but now realise what a great song this is and I've never really listened to Elton john either, I've been missing out.
The piano work in this song is amazing as is the piano work on the studio version of "Tonight" I've been a fan of EJ since 1969, and he is as amazing today (The Union ) as he was 41 years ago.
@amylynn1986amy Yep... when I saw Dr. Zhivago for the first I almost fell on the floor when I heard it. The howling wind. the bell tolling, the exact song! It was clearly taken form the movie, I wonder why this had never been acknowledged...
@saumier1 Now, don't be unkind... apparently 50 people got distracted when their asses called requesting their heads back!!! LOL!!! This song rocks!!! Thank you, "ShesAFrozenFire", for posting it!!! : )
This was always going to be my funeral song since the age of 7, pretty morbid but yea never afraid of the death been thru sooo many. BEST ALBUM EVER, one of mine to take on a desert Island.
I do want this played at my Memorial. EJ and bernie are an awesome team. I love his work with Princess Diana, her charities and his. God knows who his angels on earth are all we have to do is look and listen.
Elton John is a musical genius! He's not a lyricist, though and that's why Bernie Taupin writes the lyrics. This song is really the best piece he ever wrote--hands down!
I was cool with Elton up until he started attacking religion. I know faith groups have had a hard time staying out of politics and respecting individual freedom, but give it a rest, man. You're rich, famous, everyone loves you and you've got equal rights now. Take a chill pill.
If this song was not on the album, I would not have bought it, at least 5 times. And I still have not got it . All of my girlfriends ripped me off. They knew this would hurt the most. So now i just go 2 u tube and sing along without them. I win!!
This video... EJ ...He was the first lady Gaga. Awsome song. Q: 1- Did EJ write the music as well as lyrics to this song? Q: 2- who is the girl at 8:14? Anyone.
@Rowdyrecords55 And let's not forget the opening synthesizer lines. This is from wikipedia "The grandiose introduction to "Funeral For A Friend" was performed on A.R.P. synthesizer by the album's engineer, David Hentschel, who Elton recalled, overdubbed track after track of music and synthetic atmospheric effects until the mini-opus was complete."
@sqm38 Maybe after Golden Slumbers, I've wanted that played at my funeral for as long as I've grasped the concept of death! I'm going to a funeral for a friend tomorrow and this seemed like an appropriate song to give a listen to.
@HommbreGiaca Haha I respectfully disagree. Haha I love Dream Theater... But they all overdid it like it was pie left in the oven too long. haha You're wrong.

How can anyone be sad listening to this song! It is so full of positive energy and how can it not put a smile on your face! From 7:54 to 8:27 is an absolute masterpiece!

I was at his concert in Youngstown Ohio. The room was buzzing and we were waiting for the man himself. The lights dimmed and the opening synthesizer played. He walked out on stage and the place shook with our screams. It was my first concert and it will always be my favorite. People can say Elvis is the king of rock and Michael Jackson is the king of Pop, but Elton John is the King Of Kings.
I love this song. Although I believe it is referring to death of a love affair and the pain it caused, I still think it fits for the loss of anything close to you.
Elton was playing the piano at age 3. At the age of 11 he won a junior scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music. According to one of his instructors, Jonh promptly played back like a "gramophone record", a four-page piece by Handel that he heard for the first time.
In 1976 at the age of 16 I had to mourn in silence the death of my first lover who died along with 27 other students on a bus crash in central Cuba. The bastard Castros dismissed the accident because it involved a military jeep with high ranking officials. There was nothing to bury, they all burned beyond recognition. This song became my anthem, my hold to life, my hope. To know of such pain when one is that young leaves an indelible scar. They all went too soon but they are all angels now...
this song is a wonderful piece of music and it should be played on the airwaves like a national anthem,,l would put it up there with the very best,,another classic composition by elton john and bernie taupin,
"I was playin rock'n roll and you were just a fan, but my music couldn't hold you, so i split the band, Love lie's bleeding in my hand"..................Magic!
@dualpoletech bless your heart..I contribute this to my lost love too..he died in a car crash and we had nothing to bury since he and the truck burned in the fire. my heart goes out to you.
@dualpoletech so sorry to hear about your loss my friend. I am going through a very painful emotional upheaval right now and the words to thisawesome song ring so true to me.
@dualpoletech..Not much to say except WOW... this is my favorite Anthem to my friend Kerry who died in a bad accident also(truck)when we were 14. She ditched school after lunch that day and the next thing we all knew is she was gone..., and like you said with the angels.
@dualpoletech You dear soul, how my heart goes out to you.You have endured a loss such as I have ever known. I can't even begin to try to understand your loss,or so say I understand. I don't. I will tell you that my heart and prayers are with you. I don't know how long it has been since this heinous event occurred I pray the pain has has eased. some, although I can't be sure a recovery from that would ever happen. My hope for you is strong. Peace
You know, normally I hate life stories that people put on Youtube.... but I must admit, that is one pretty dang interesting story. I don't want to risk offending you, even if it happened 36 years ago, but I must give you props for writing a worthwhile comment on videos that are normally so filled with schmaltz.
@dualpoletech If only there were a way this comment could be gotten to Taupin and Elton themselves. Music is an art and beauty that has changed lives and saved lives. My hat is off to them for creating such a powerful piece of work and to you for having such great respect for music. Yes, angels they are. I'm sorry you had to live through such a terrible tragedy.
I wonder if anybody realizes that this song has nothing to do with a funeral?
It is the death of a relationship. Would sound pretty awkward at some-ones burial.

1973. The year of the release, and the year I turned 18, and began losing touch with EJ's music.
I suppose these few songs sum it up, as they are the last bit of genius from John/Taupin for me.
I don't expect to get much of anything except criticism from the diehard Elton fans, but that's cool.
I suppose I'm saying that if you have been able to stay with EJ after this album, well then, jolly good for you, sincerely.
Peace.

@dualpoletech How horrible that at such a young age you had to endure the death of your lover. I would be angry with Castro as well.
