@neuralres In actuality this thing works pretty well. My students use it and can control several different commands relatively quickly, and can also differentiate between commands at will. I'm not really good at it, but I think that has more to do with focus and or my inability to do that.
This works pretty well, and actually reads electrical impulses that bleed through your scull when you think certain things, and creates a map based on those leakings.
It seems this technology "as is" will function better for some than others, since it's based on mapping brainpatterns. If you have problems visualising things in a clear way that you can repeat to yourself and the program, you'll have problems using this. Several recordings/mappings attached to the same commands/functions could sort this out. Is that possible?
Anyway, this might be accompanied by courses in visual thinking and such further down the road. The potential for this is... wow...
The problem with this toy is that it is looking for a specific way of thinking. Everyone thinks differently so, therefore, it fails to work on everyone. If you've read reviews some people say it is a miracle worker others that it is garbage, it is not that you are doing it wrong, its that it is reading you wrong. Lets say the EPOC wants you to believe the object being pushed away and you are thinking push, you are not doing it correctly as you are not thinking of pushing it, but simply pushing.
@ukiki11 You're supposed to map it to your way of thinking. It takes 8 seconds to map each command. You can map multiple users. There is no "default only"
The idea for the arrows and to use mind control in humanoid robotics (Honda did copy my idea for Asimo) , or to move the cursor of the mouse in the computer were mine... now watch this... if you use the squared screen with augmented reality in your cell phone or eye glasses... then you will be able to do more... I have even more ideas to implement... but this is for later... you can watch my website with the most complete Humanoid Robot list in the World in the mean time...
@luisbeck007 Unless you were there in 1983 when IBM was looking into EEG based HIDs, using 'mind control' for robotics or to move a mouse cursor on a computer were not your ideas exclusively. These ideas have existed for about as long as EEG has existed as a tool in modern science, which I think may be longer than you've existed on this planet.
I'd say you need to retrain... Try to actually visualize it happening. Imagine what the lines on the screen would look like and how the perspective changes the further away the cube moves. I'm sure visualization is key for these kind of exercises given how the brain processes information.
you also have to consider the concentration levels of the reviewer, undoubtedly at least 50% of his attention is on this video and not the moving of the objects
In official videos it works pretty well... I guess it needs some training to 1. be able to concentrate enough for the epoc and 2. to let the epoc adapt to you. I guess it is like a microphone, wich needs to adapt to the user, before specific patterns can be found. (Well, it's rather the software, though)
i would like to know if it measure brain states. alpha beta theta for example. would be great for monitoring meditations and cognitive control progress, thats what imma use mine for.
i just got mine ,and its not as easy as it looks! we should start a research group.i would like to be able to help people with adictions and disorders with neurofeedback stuff
Cool that you got the Epoc, but isn't it too yearly to buy it, for now there is no application you can use this thing with, alas it is useless, for now. The price isn't half bad, but its pointless if you can't play with it, if game Devs are going to take use of it,it wont happen until 2011, or it will depent on the producer to imcorporate game profiles for it. Its only my opnion, who knows if game companies wanna use it or not. It looks cool, but we'll see. PS, did you shave your head for it ?
can u post more when you get the hang of it to see what its fully capable of doing? because if thats the normal response all the time that would be a real let down =( also have they made any real computer games for it yet? or is it mostly what uve showed us, just like simple things like moving a cube or whatever?
Great video, thanks for sharing it! Can't wait to see this technology used to make games that develop your mind. Please post more of your experience with it
one of emotives tech support people told me they were going to switch to using dry sensors so say good bye to wet sensors yay!

have you tried playing video games with it? how about web browsing?
InsertSilman 4 months ago
They did say that maybe when you start to use this, using some kind of motion (typically hands) can increase how effective the EPOC is.

I am joking, pretty nifty stuff, I would love to get my hands on one of these and start developing against the API..., $500 bucks is a bit steep!!

So this actually monitors the brainwaves then and not just the muscles in the face like the NIA .
Could this be used to diangnose brain conditions i.e. if the face didnt respond to certain impulses in the training ?

I sure hope it works better after training. [Like Speech Recognition] It doesn't look like it works that well.
I see that you uploaded this a while ago, is it working better now?

FYI - It comes with a background app that converts your thoughts into keypresses so that it can be "programmed" to interface with existing software.
