@Kingding6 Yeh I'm a fan of his too, the centrifugal funk album with Him, Brett Garsed and Frank Gambale is insane.. Worth Checking out if you like fusion shredding
Id cut my dick off to have the discipline to phrase the way this guy does. Unfortunately even cutting the dick off wont make me have this kind of discipline
@gre1990 That's what I was thinking. The beauty of Robben Ford is his phrasing, this was a lot of weedely, weedlely. It was a very well done weedley weedley tho.
@Kingding6 - But this guy can not only play Shawn's stuff, but transcribe it too. Why would then, when going balls out, play slower? This is a meaningless argument anyway over 2, A+ musicians so let's just leave it at that ;)
@drDraaper I agree on that but then, since he is a paying a Robben ford track...it is the first thing you notice, anyways great player dont missunderstand me..same applies to other players..I can imagine Vai playing a solo on this track..
nice player , not a lot of thought to melody or leaving the odd space here and there pity , r ford is good at that its a art in itself and a big part of playing the guitar .
phrasing? are you seriously saying that guthrie of all people lacks phrasing? a large handful of people who know him say he has the best phrasing in the world. the rest either say he is one of the best or are musically retarded.

@aryinc Fair enough :D But yea, one can't really debate over what player is better, or who has better tone, or anything like that, simply because it is opinion :D

Hi, can someone lend me some advice on how to play better fusion guitar? I know lots of scales, chords, notes and modal theory, etc etc - but what am I missing? As far as I can tell, what makes a good fusion sound is : Lots of minor pentatonic scales, lots of positions, throw in the flat 5th occasionally, slid onto 'correct tones' from wrong tones, and to target the chord tones of the chord progression....ohh and lots of fast triplest, 16th notes, and patterns! have I missed any fundimentals?
@platriani Those are the fundamentals pretty much. But remember that it's music at the end of everything -- don't worry too much about the advanced calculus of technique. It'll all come together with time.
@platriani There's no such thing as magic formulas. Formulas are sterile. A computer will never play great fusion applying your formula. As guthrie says: Sound first. Theory is theory and not music. The best way to learn is to LISTEN to alot of players, then try to copy their feel using your ears and then try to sing every single note you play on your guitar. With time musical ideas will come alot easier and better. This is how you become a musicien and not just a mechanical guitar player
@todomusika Correct, of course feel & emotion is key here, however there 'are' magic formulae for improvisation - I have many books on it! Such as tension's, harmony, arpeggios, playing 'up a 5th' , you name it; watching Guthrie and Greg Howe, and putting their feel & technique to one side, there is a lot of theory and knowledge of chords and scales going on - they don't stumble on these amazing runs accidentally - there is logic. In my original question I was seeking mathematical answers.
@todomusika An example of something I found useful, and the sorta thing I am looking for is this : I was Jamming a Fusion in Am7, and over the root chard (Am7) a cool tip is to play a major 7 arpeggio from the minor 3rd of the chord (in this case a Cmaj7 Arp) - Hell does that sound Jazzy! Now thats a math tip that I will apply some feeling too :)
@platriani What I was trying to say is that if you can relate a minor chord with it's relative major arpeggio in your head and then play it whenever you want , who cares about the name of the chords and arpeggios? One can play very beautifully a major arpeggio over a minor chord without knowing the theory behind it, but no one can do it by only knowing the theory.
@platriani You're the proof of what i'm saying.. you say that you know the formula behind fusion.. yet you still unhappy with your playing. Listen and pay attention to what you listen and then try to replicate it your own way with your own feel.. This take alot of years but it's the healthiest way to go..
@pakk82 Gambale has a different approach to improvising IMO. I think Guthrie Govan and, even more so, Greg Howe adopt more of a rhythmic approach to improvising and they seem to cling a little more to the melody whereas Gambale has a more impressionistic/abstract approach to improvising (although his rhythmic phrasing is very good as well!). Check out Gambale's "playing a funk solo" here on youtube, stunning player!
I absolutely love this type of blues/fusion, one of the best styles out there. Wish i could find more tracks like this one out there.... it's rarity makes it all the sweeter!
Pale imitation of Robben. Good, but dry. Guthrie is good. He does so many styles for Bluesjamtracks. com. He lacks soul. Purchased his recordings. Eh, just wasn't all that impressed. He's like a parrot. Polly want jazz cracker? Polly want a Jeff Beck cracker? Polly want an Albert King cracker? Polly want a Larry Carlton cracker? Uber player, and there's enough of those.
@GoldtopSam There are no crackers here. He's in possess of two functioning hears, if he wanted to sound like Robben I guess he would have played this track in a completely different way.
These are just ideas he's sharing with anyone who may find them useful. He is using "help the poor" RF version as a back track , that's all.
Wow...I already know how godly guthrie is...But every time i see the same video i have seen a million times...i get that amazing feeling of disovering your new favorite guitarist all over again.
this make me try keep practising to play and improvise at least 1/3 like him this its a strong force of inspiration !!! i hope we all here learn something of this
@GuitarRoast You know who robben is? You cant compare Guthrie and him. Thats like comparing a mini cooper and a ferrari. Mini cooper is the best car to drive in a city but a ferrari is useless in a city while good on track
That G3 would be amazing! It'd be great to see him that because it'd push whoever was on the tour with him, to really push themselves. I think we'd see the best of Vai, Satch, Petrucci or whoever is on it. :)
@TheManFender Its not supposed to sound like Robben Ford. God I hate people that dont think before they speak. It is just the backing track that is supposed to sound like him. Im glad it doesn't sound like him, Robben is insanely boring.
@tastefulphrasing@tastefulphrasing Well, Before you are insulting people on this website please think a little bit. If you hate people for the mentioned reason you are in big trouble! My comment was not to give low credit to Guthrie!!!!!!! He is good enough to be appreciated for that.
By the way, Robben may be boring in your opinion. The impact he has on players around the world is quite big.
it seems like his guitar is the one who sings the music! really appreciate it. :)

@GoldtopSam His playing to a Robben Ford style TRACK. Not imitating his style, it's the track that is Robben Ford-ish.
ShavedCheese 1 year ago
@GoldtopSam There are no crackers here. He's in possess of two functioning hears, if he wanted to sound like Robben I guess he would have played this track in a completely different way.
These are just ideas he's sharing with anyone who may find them useful. He is using "help the poor" RF version as a back track , that's all.

@GoldtopSam - Have you ever actually heard him try to imitate other players?

This couldn't get any more slippery if it was played on a canoe flowing down a river of maple syrup.

@Maxx61
maple syrup is sticky, not slippery. the canoe would have gotten stuck lol.

sorry Robben, Guthrie wins!
GuitarRoast 1 year ago 2
@GuitarRoast You know who robben is? You cant compare Guthrie and him. Thats like comparing a mini cooper and a ferrari. Mini cooper is the best car to drive in a city but a ferrari is useless in a city while good on track

That G3 would be amazing! It'd be great to see him that because it'd push whoever was on the tour with him, to really push themselves. I think we'd see the best of Vai, Satch, Petrucci or whoever is on it. :)

What does this have to do with Robben Ford? Ford is a genious of his time and has developed his own style.
Anyway, technically this is very good. But I think he is good enough to be labeled as Guthrie Govan playin' Guthrie Govan-style track!
TheManFender 1 year ago
@TheManFender Its not supposed to sound like Robben Ford. God I hate people that dont think before they speak. It is just the backing track that is supposed to sound like him. Im glad it doesn't sound like him, Robben is insanely boring.

@tastefulphrasing @tastefulphrasing Well, Before you are insulting people on this website please think a little bit. If you hate people for the mentioned reason you are in big trouble! My comment was not to give low credit to Guthrie!!!!!!! He is good enough to be appreciated for that.
By the way, Robben may be boring in your opinion. The impact he has on players around the world is quite big.
Your comment shows low respect for other people!
