  • it seems like his guitar is the one who sings the music! really appreciate it. :)

  • a little 80sh Gambale also?

  • Come on....EVERYone knows Guthrie is secretly High Wizard Shreddolf Von Tastylicks.

  • @ 1:00 Jesus....Funknasty with Guthrie!!!

  • I love his facial expressions when he plays

  • God, I just listened to it, love his Style

    Has he released anything?

  • @CDGR31 his old band was called "Erotic Cakes" and his newest project is called "The Aristocrats". They're both extremely good.

  • @slash1128 Is old band? I think you mean his first solo CD

  • GUTHRIE Y U NO MAKE NEW ALBUM

  • This backing track is of a jam tracks series together with "Larry Carlton style". I had this CD but I'dont find it. Where could I donload it??? :((

  • Chord progression sounds so much like " Help the poor " from one of Robben ford's album...

  • 00:59 Human after all =P

  • @youryes Haha, still thinking he's human...If you only knew

  • @shenkeey lol you are right. Guthrie is from another galaxy :)

(checked out your videos, nice guitar dude ! )

  • @youryes (I'm so embarrassed about those videos, i sucked so bad back then :x Thanks though! :))

  • @youryes I actually didn't hear that as a mistake. To me it just sounds like a gritty transition from the bend. There's no question that this man is an extra-terrestrial.

  • @Loganberrymusic the mistake happens exactly at 1:00 to be precise lol But yes, guthrie is really one of a kind and I absolutely love everything that he plays

  • What scales is he using?

  • @khoiavo ALL ^~

  • @khoiavo what scales isn't he using?

  • @magicmanmason haha exactly what i was thinking.

i would always hesitate to say anybody has mastered the guitar simply because there's always more to learn...but if anybody has, it's this guy. truly unbelievable playing.

  • @khoiavo all of them mate

  • why, someone dislike?.............

  • simply amazing the best guitarist at the phrazes...

  • Jesus H Lord!

  • Wow These scales blow my mind. So much for trying to play by ear.. Where can i learn to play this amazing track?

  • style? help the poor...its a backing track..come on

  • มัน ร็อบเบน ฟอร์ด ใหนวะ เลอะเทอะเกิน

  • 1:03 to 1:07 explains perfectly the Guthrie style. Can't stop listening that part.

  • Is Guthrie the best 'outside player' ever?

  • @opilus I absolutely love Wayne Krantz's outside playing. Then there are piano greats like Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea and sax greats like Eric Marienthal who just do amazing things with outside playing.

  • @opilus check shawn lane to

  • @Kingding6 Yeh I'm a fan of his too, the centrifugal funk album with Him, Brett Garsed and Frank Gambale is insane.. Worth Checking out if you like fusion shredding

  • Id cut my dick off to have the discipline to phrase the way this guy does. Unfortunately even cutting the dick off wont make me have this kind of discipline

  • aah, not even Guthrie can cover Robben totally :) Good cover though

  • One word: BEAST !!!!

  • I never criticize playing this good. Never about 'how good' 'who's better' or technique-stuff/phrasing etc...or even tone.

Just: Do I like it or not?

    I Love This! ymmv

  • kinda repetitive...great technique for sure, but i think he lacks of ideas.

  • @gre1990 he certainly doesnt lack guitar control

  • @gre1990 That's what I was thinking. The beauty of Robben Ford is his phrasing, this was a lot of weedely, weedlely. It was a very well done weedley weedley tho.

  • The title for the movie Kick Ass was inspired by his guitar skills.

  • guthrie and jimmy herring: please marry, adopt a son and train him to be THE prodigal guitar player. for the sake of mankind.

  • Damn...look at that beautiful quilt-top! Oh yeah, his playing is great too!

  • Comment removed

  • Fuck this advertising channel bullshit I'll go elsewhere

  • dude hes mad creative with his lines....i actually really dig this cat when hes not shredding

  • Cant fully appreciate his music... Too scared that the track will end at some point

  • gewoon ziek goed die gast

  • 27 people are allergic to good music

  • Guthrie and Ron Thal are godssss FUCKKKK... dont know why there names aren't written in the bible....

  • @marcjuh11 That's because Guthrie Govan and Ron Thal actually exist opposed to God ;)

  • 01:53 never quite heard pentatonics played that quick before..

  • @Hardysamnin familiar with Shawn Lane?

  • @Kingding6 yep

  • @Hardysamnin and this is the fastest you have heard pentatonics played?

  • @Kingding6 - Shawn tended to play around in the modes more than play pentatonic licks, so um.... yeah

  • @Hardysamnin just saying I have Power solos, and he rips pentatonics faster than anybody I've ever seen.

  • @Kingding6 - But this guy can not only play Shawn's stuff, but transcribe it too. Why would then, when going balls out, play slower? This is a meaningless argument anyway over 2, A+ musicians so let's just leave it at that ;)

  • @Hardysamnin your right there, top class on both accounts.

  • @drDraaper I agree on that but then, since he is a paying a Robben ford track...it is the first thing you notice, anyways great player dont missunderstand me..same applies to other players..I can imagine Vai playing a solo on this track..

  • Is ther eanything this man cannot play? Awesome and tasteful.

  • I wish he would come to New York

  • Awesome video!!!

  • hell yeah, tasteful is the right word here

  • oh soo colorful

  • the best gutarist

  • non c'entra 1 cazzo con Robben Ford

  • Does anyone know of other guitarists like Guthrie that have that same slick, liquid metal type sound?

  • @bengosha Yes, look up Alex Hutchings. I believe he is from the UK as well, and is very similar in style to Guthrie.

  • Gutrie Govan = drive.

  • nice player , not a lot of thought to melody or leaving the odd space here and there pity , r ford is good at that its a art in itself and a big part of playing the guitar .

  • Very good player:..Nice..but not like Robben..linear hard rock style, where is the phrasing??where is the blues??

  • @duskdiver sorry??? what???

  • @Chisuz I am not saying the guy doesnt know how to play...but I bet if you ask what his weaker spot are..he´d tell you phrasing

  • @duskdiver I completely disagree with that statement.

  • @duskdiver

phrasing? are you seriously saying that guthrie of all people lacks phrasing? a large handful of people who know him say he has the best phrasing in the world. the rest either say he is one of the best or are musically retarded.

  • @duskdiver Mate, I bet if you asked any serious player what their weak spot was they'd say phrasing.

  • @duskdiver

That is a joke. His phrasing is one of the main reasons, that he is the best there is.

  • @MrUldahl

phrasing is the thing that makes marty friedman one of the best there is,that man can bend like 10 subnotes from 3 notes, this guy isn't as awesome as people make him.yes he's good and can play but intresting and anything new nah not really.i heard guitarist that play to the point the right solos right place and forever rememberd without forced technique, this guy somethimes plays technical to be technical.

  • @aryinc MARTY FRIEDMAN? You should delete your youtube account...shit

  • @goblesqb7

yeah good idea go delete you're acount, because now you're saying guthrie own megadteh.does guthrie just have a bucnh of notes glued together or does he actually have hits? almost everybody know mustaine, almost every metal head knoww friedman but govan 10000000 scratch their head, listen, scratch their head aggain and say yeah i listend to satriani the other day allot more intrsting.what are you trying to mean that you're better then friedman or that guthrie is the best no comment?.

  • @goblesqb7

never heard of dragon kiss? that is some phrasing m8.get into rock music more.denying isn't worth my time.

  • @goblesqb7

okay whats more awesome killing road solo, hangar 18,tornado of soouls, lucretia.or any guthrie solo?.fuck whats better surfing with the alien or erotic cake?.go ask you're self that quistion then come back and if you don''t got the right answer then you're account is pretty uselles because there is only one guitarist for ya and that guthrie.guthrie=rusty nice and technical but where is the red line/song.

  • @aryinc It's all an opinion, and completely. personally i think Erotic Cakes is way above almost any other album, but that's just my opinion :D And one can enjoy listening too other guitarist other than Guthrie, even if one thinks Guthrie is the best. Where is the red line/song? Go listen to Wonderful Slippery thing :D

Anyway, it's all just opinion :D

  • @Guitareben

almost every album, yeah you're right it's all upinion 100000 great guitarists make 1 ultimate so what are we actually talking about there is no ladder of the greatest upionion wise we would still counting back from 100 when really minimalized it.i shall listen to that i'm more of an classic rock guy,no tricks no bullshit etc.

  • @aryinc Fair enough :D But yea, one can't really debate over what player is better, or who has better tone, or anything like that, simply because it is opinion :D

But please, take a listen to some of the tracks off Guthrie's album. Great album :D Though kinda jazzy and stuff at bits, which may or may not be to you're liking :D (try to like all music though :D )

  • @Guitareben

by music you mean the definition right? no fing way am i ever going beyond 5 sec of justin bieber singing or the comercial crap for the radio like black eyed piss or bruno ars,pop sucks.not by any hating means but today's pop sucks really bad.yeah then let's rather listen to rock and kinds.guthrie ain't really my cup of tea but rather him then anything comercial from todays radio.

  • @Guitareben

i listend to it yeah it's nice,i prefer jason becker more from a technical perspective.this guy is nice but i find a joe satch moree intresting to listen to just personal,i don't this guy is the end musically i actually still prefer them oldies like blackmore and page allot for what they did.

  • Guthrie rocks.

  • gotta love that pentatonic

  • the 25 dislikes are from Guthrie Govan himself because he says it's not good enough when its clearly Godly

  • The lick from 1:00 to 1:10 made the hair on the back of my neck stand up!

  • that nigger never hits a wrong note VERY FLUID AND TASTEFUL! guthrie govan IS the master of all guitars and we are his children!

  • dam that SURH does sound god!

  • I [aid for this jamtrack and all I got in return was an out-of-office auto reply saying the office was closed for Christmas. Supposed to open on 4th Jan but have had no response despite emails. Not Happy.

  • FUCK ME. Does this guy know harmony or what.

  • 0:45 yay melodic minor =o

  • Hey, wat would someone reccomend doing to get a more articulate tone like Gurthrie's?

  • Hi, can someone lend me some advice on how to play better fusion guitar? I know lots of scales, chords, notes and modal theory, etc etc - but what am I missing? As far as I can tell, what makes a good fusion sound is : Lots of minor pentatonic scales, lots of positions, throw in the flat 5th occasionally, slid onto 'correct tones' from wrong tones, and to target the chord tones of the chord progression....ohh and lots of fast triplest, 16th notes, and patterns! have I missed any fundimentals?

  • @platriani Those are the fundamentals pretty much. But remember that it's music at the end of everything -- don't worry too much about the advanced calculus of technique. It'll all come together with time.

    Cheers

  • @platriani There's no such thing as magic formulas. Formulas are sterile. A computer will never play great fusion applying your formula. As guthrie says: Sound first. Theory is theory and not music. The best way to learn is to LISTEN to alot of players, then try to copy their feel using your ears and then try to sing every single note you play on your guitar. With time musical ideas will come alot easier and better. This is how you become a musicien and not just a mechanical guitar player

  • @todomusika Correct, of course feel & emotion is key here, however there 'are' magic formulae for improvisation - I have many books on it! Such as tension's, harmony, arpeggios, playing 'up a 5th' , you name it; watching Guthrie and Greg Howe, and putting their feel & technique to one side, there is a lot of theory and knowledge of chords and scales going on - they don't stumble on these amazing runs accidentally - there is logic. In my original question I was seeking mathematical answers.

  • @todomusika An example of something I found useful, and the sorta thing I am looking for is this : I was Jamming a Fusion in Am7, and over the root chard (Am7) a cool tip is to play a major 7 arpeggio from the minor 3rd of the chord (in this case a Cmaj7 Arp) - Hell does that sound Jazzy! Now thats a math tip that I will apply some feeling too :)

  • @platriani What I was trying to say is that if you can relate a minor chord with it's relative major arpeggio in your head and then play it whenever you want , who cares about the name of the chords and arpeggios? One can play very beautifully a major arpeggio over a minor chord without knowing the theory behind it, but no one can do it by only knowing the theory.

  • @platriani You're the proof of what i'm saying.. you say that you know the formula behind fusion.. yet you still unhappy with your playing. Listen and pay attention to what you listen and then try to replicate it your own way with your own feel.. This take alot of years but it's the healthiest way to go..

  • @platriani btw i'm not saying that theory is bad, it's actually very useful to learn how things sound and work... but sound first! cheers!

  • Guthrie is THE man ... OH Yeah !

  • this guy should be more popular than he is man, he deserves it

  • hahahaha so impressive and sick, jiiisssss

  • HAHA this guy is so good that this company pays him to lock himself in that room and play guitar.

  • Guthrie Govan, Greg Howe and Frank Gambale should do a G3 themselves. That would be fucking amazing.

  • @lollipophugo Literally G3. Govan, Greg, Gambale! LOL!

  • @lollipophugo Itotally agree!! but you should check Tom Quayle, you'll get pretty impressed

  • @lollipophugo with tony royster jr on the drums and wooten on the bass please

  • @lollipophugo ah, i dont know,i find gambale too fast. guthries fast just enough to hear all the notes saperately

  • @pakk82 his newer bluesy stuff is amazing and a lot more tasteful than his older work.

  • @pakk82 Gambale has a different approach to improvising IMO. I think Guthrie Govan and, even more so, Greg Howe adopt more of a rhythmic approach to improvising and they seem to cling a little more to the melody whereas Gambale has a more impressionistic/abstract approach to improvising (although his rhythmic phrasing is very good as well!). Check out Gambale's "playing a funk solo" here on youtube, stunning player!

  • @lollipophugo HAHAHAHAHAHA, that would be way too much epicness for one stage.

  • @lollipophugo I think Marco Sfogli could be a good choice also.

  • @lollipophugo yes indeed, Guthrie and Greg are amazing!

  • Guthrie is so great!!!

    Nice greets

    Uli

  • What guitar is he playing? I love the tone of this.

  • @Kenman22

I think its a Guthrie Govan Suhr Signature, or maybe just a standard Suhr model, not sure.

  • I absolutely love this type of blues/fusion, one of the best styles out there. Wish i could find more tracks like this one out there.... it's rarity makes it all the sweeter!

  • @1davec12345 Check out FusionGroovin at Live365

  • @TreeSkier Quality, i'me listening now

  • @TreeSkier Fusion groovin is awesome!!! That's where I discovered many of my favorite fusion players!!!

  • Pale imitation of Robben. Good, but dry. Guthrie is good. He does so many styles for Bluesjamtracks. com. He lacks soul. Purchased his recordings. Eh, just wasn't all that impressed. He's like a parrot. Polly want jazz cracker? Polly want a Jeff Beck cracker? Polly want an Albert King cracker? Polly want a Larry Carlton cracker? Uber player, and there's enough of those.

  • @GoldtopSam His playing to a Robben Ford style TRACK. Not imitating his style, it's the track that is Robben Ford-ish.

  • @GoldtopSam There are no crackers here. He's in possess of two functioning hears, if he wanted to sound like Robben I guess he would have played this track in a completely different way.

These are just ideas he's sharing with anyone who may find them useful. He is using "help the poor" RF version as a back track , that's all.

  • @GoldtopSam - Have you ever actually heard him try to imitate other players?

  • @GoldtopSam suggest you check out his who's best

  • Wow...I already know how godly guthrie is...But every time i see the same video i have seen a million times...i get that amazing feeling of disovering your new favorite guitarist all over again.

  • Comment removed

  • this make me try keep practising to play and improvise at least 1/3 like him this its a strong force of inspiration !!! i hope we all here learn something of this

  • loving the bend at 1.51!

  • makes you want to put the guitar in the bin and just give up.

  • hope next G3 guthrie govan the monster tone

  • I love that run from 1.05-1.10 !!

  • He's he most imressive and fluent player I've ever seen. All the rest of the debate passes me by.

  • 1:54 - 1:59 umm..

  • 1:20 to 1:50 ... Wtf a big jazzy solo ^^ err after my pentatonic and my dorian i think ill pass direct to jazz scales lol !

  • I fucking hate this guy. everytime i watch him, i feel useless.

  • Might be better than the original・・・Help the poor.

  • This couldn't get any more slippery if it was played on a canoe flowing down a river of maple syrup.

  • @Maxx61

maple syrup is sticky, not slippery. the canoe would have gotten stuck lol.

  • sorry Robben, Guthrie wins!

  • @GuitarRoast You know who robben is? You cant compare Guthrie and him. Thats like comparing a mini cooper and a ferrari. Mini cooper is the best car to drive in a city but a ferrari is useless in a city while good on track

  • check out his feeling on the lips

  • Jesus Christ, this guy is impressive. Just as impressive as me being only 21 and knowing who the fuck Robben Ford is.

  • ah man... this guy never ceases to impress.

  • Hail Guthrie !!..

  • That G3 would be amazing! It'd be great to see him that because it'd push whoever was on the tour with him, to really push themselves. I think we'd see the best of Vai, Satch, Petrucci or whoever is on it. :)

  • ALL OF THESE VIDEOS ARE IMPROV!!!

  • @mmnjk99 you can't learn that.

  • G3 2010 (Guthrie Govan, Greg Howe and Brett Garsed).

oh well, it's nice to dream. At least I have youtube.

  • Jesus Christ, he's so good....his phrasing is amazing

  • @Situious i know, what the hell!!!!! Absolute genius guitarist.

  • Nice backin track, Guitarist freebie no ?

  • questo la chitarra se la mangia..

  • What does this have to do with Robben Ford? Ford is a genious of his time and has developed his own style.

Anyway, technically this is very good. But I think he is good enough to be labeled as Guthrie Govan playin' Guthrie Govan-style track!

  • @TheManFender Its not supposed to sound like Robben Ford. God I hate people that dont think before they speak. It is just the backing track that is supposed to sound like him. Im glad it doesn't sound like him, Robben is insanely boring.

  • Comment removed

  • @tastefulphrasing @tastefulphrasing Well, Before you are insulting people on this website please think a little bit. If you hate people for the mentioned reason you are in big trouble! My comment was not to give low credit to Guthrie!!!!!!! He is good enough to be appreciated for that.

By the way, Robben may be boring in your opinion. The impact he has on players around the world is quite big.

Your comment shows low respect for other people!

  • @TheManFender Right man!!

  • @tastefulphrasing Matter of opinion whether Robben is boring or not. Think before you speak.
