You can easily make that ball with any english. It depends on the shapes you're trying to get and the shapes you already have on your object ball. If it is an extreme cut, you would use nearly all. if not all, inside english and hit the rail just before the object ball. It's even possible to make a reverse cut on an object ball frozen to the rail using this technique. I do agree with some of what you are saying, but your information is misleading. Good video for beginners, though. Cheers.

You actually have to make contact with the rail just before the ball. If you make contact with the ball and the rail at the same time, the cb will throw the ob into the rail and you miss.
On the rail shots really only need vertical axis hits. If you imagine the possible reactions from the vertical axis as a triangle you can make the triangle wider on by using high inside or low outside.
As the cut angle increases to around a quarter ball hit then the vertical axis has little effect and left and right english is needed to affect the cue ball off of tangent.
However keep in mind that there are optimal ways to pot the ball and you have to play within a safe limit.
I have always shot these with inside english and try to strike the reail just slightly before the object ball, this way he cue ball "shoots" off the rail and sends the object ball down the rail. works for me probably 90% of the time.. but ill try your way too sometime, see which works better
Do you have a Cue Ball control tutorial video, cuz i need that pretty bad, if i try a controlled shot, either i pocked the object ball or i do the cue placement, i cant get both of them in the same shot.
I would love to be able to make a cue ball control vid, the problem is that everyone strokes the cue different. You have to practice, judge your own strength and speed. You also have to understand how the cue ball will carom off the object ball and/or rail after the impact. What is a soft stroke for me may be a medium stroke for someone else and we will each end up with different results. Set up drills and practice your english for control. Watch where the cue ball goes and remember it.
hehe it helped a lot.. its nice to learn not only the shot that i wanted but also the physics and dynamics that are involved so that i can improvise for myself..
p.s.-you are so totally my coach now... went for pool with my friends and managed to hold my own pretty well just by watching these videos. now to go and try this shot out.
thanks a lot!! ill be puttin all my queries up here from now on. :)

I constantly try to go with left/right depending on which bank the ball is... that helps!
