  • A cover isnt supposed to better the original. I don't know any cover that is in the same class as the original version. But its to show, and to to recognise a great song, a great singer, or writer.

  • vocal a bit ploddy, but then it really takes off with the guitar at 2.45

  • wow wow wow blew away by the solo dont get any better than this what a sound

  • what a great piece of music. Long live JM.

  • 4 people hit the wrong button for sure what a sound class

  • Good Ol' Carlos Augusto, He never needs much excuse to let it ALL hang out!

  • I heard about this song on of all places an economics blog (Bill Mitchell.) I listened to John Martyn do it live first (the reference was to John Martyn) and then I saw this one. I'm sorry I missed John before he passed. He is a talented song writer. Carlos is simply magnificent. It is like he plays with starlight for strings ... I'm going to try the Dr. John version next. It is a good thing to find good music while roaming the net.

  • Is that Forest Whitaker on vocals?

  • if there is someone better than metal, this is Carlitos

  • @SeanOreen since when has it been the singer who sets the songs tempo...?

  • Frankly, Carlos has been playing over-produced horse-shit for 30 years. He is Dickey Betts with a Latino twist. Same shit, different day.

  • Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was. and the spirit shall return unto god who gave it.

  • Johnny boy pops up in the most unexpected places, if you can stand sitting through that very 1980's of shows Miami Vice, there is a couple of his tunes, in there. The music used to be a big part of the show, and I think if memory serves that it was a couple of tunes off Grace and Danger.

  • I like this interpretation of Johns song and is surely a pure tribute to the man.

  • nice to hear a different take on it...I personally prefer the intimacy in the original but having such a wealth of instrumentation certainly puts a new artistic spin on it! :) very cool

  • magic from JM and CS absolute magic

  • This is the first time I've heard. Very good! Thanx.

  • Stunned by the solo

  • good cover of John's song

  • This is a good cover of Johnboys classic.......Santana as expected, has great taste and stays true to the tune..........

  • never had santana down as a fan of john martyn. nice compliment to have some1 like that cover youre song but johns untouchable. still nice tho

  • Simplemente hermoso

  • Contigo,

I'm a long-time (since 1972) English fan of Santana and this is the first I've heard of this track. Thank you SO much for sharing this truly beautiful soulful arrangement.

And is there any more from this show that you have, please?

    Thx again,

    Tony

  • John doing this during the Transatlantic sessions is an absolute joy. You will find it on youtube. This is a valuable tribute. But no match for the man himself. Sadly missed.

  • Yeah I don't think Carlos Santana would try to out do anyone. When ever he plays music from another musician it's to pay tribute to them.

  • Anybody could sing this in my presence and steal a smile. It's such a good song and anyone who plays it deserves a pat on the back. To John.

  • avanarabavon arsolestractis you really are a dick if u cant take onboard other opinions, and thats all they are.

  • this is clearly a case of one living legend tipping his hat to a dead one..anyone who cant understand carlos or the singer are NEVER going to sound lke john, surely knows fuckall about music, musicians,or pretty much anything else it seems to me..

    pfwaaa..

  • I think it's great Santana covered this wonderful song, but as it got going, I was a little disappointed in their arrangement, or lack thereof. If he would've picked it up earlier in the tune, jammed out a bit, then brought it back down (or not) for some more vocals, but it seemed it got a bit repetitious....

  • nothing is pure in music, its the singer, not the song.John would approve, singing in heaven now,God bless xxx

  • this song could be sung better but hey, nice guitar carl, heart went into it

  • Maybe so - but Tony Lindsay is a great, great singer. Have heard him live with Carlos and the band on a number of occassions and he has a great voice.

  • what??? you dont think the singer put his heart into it ??? he wouldnt be onstage with carlos fuckn santanna if he didnt have a heart, you FOOL...run along n listen to something else..twange..

  • Not bad...but not JM.

  • john martyn has so much more soul in his voice.i think they butchered it at the end with solo's and double bass

  • OMG the guitar is sublime.......nice to see respect paid to John from such a great artist.....All credit to the vocalist for trying but to be honest he tore the arse out of the song!

  • beautiful. santana di that classic song a hell of a justice, and having seen him live, that guy really can sing live.

  • A lovely homage to a beautiful song

  • An unexpected twist on a seminal song written by the sadly departed John Martyn. Very very poignant to see this

  • 'I only wanna know about love'

  • Very sorry to inform yall that this song's composer, John Martyn, died today at the age of 60. RIP, Johnny. Lovin you always.

  • az konciertos en mexico putooo!

  • Truly the most beautiful sound in the guitar world

and complemented with such an Awsome player!

    Bravo MR Santana Bravo

  • oh dear, i think this is a butchering of a great song

  • When you have someone of Santana's or Eric Claptons calibre, covering your songs..

What must it say for the original? John Martyn is pure genius.

  • @crux2211 i think it was written by Dr John but i like john martyns best

  • @panzermort Nope, it's a John Martyn original.

  • thanks for that zwinski

  • You're welcome

  • Great song! Without any doubt the best version is from Dr. John ;)

  • Great song! Without any doubt the best version is from Dr. John ;)

No its not, its from John Martyn .

  • wtf You talkin bout.......you must be off youre meds!

  • i think the best version is from Sarah Jane Morris
