Most people don't know this, but RAA isn't from Edmonton at all. Not even Alberta. They are based out of Toronto. BUT! The singer, Nils lived during the Tornado of '87 in Edmonton and that's what this song is about
We Canadians Don't Write songs about Fucking Bitches and Getting Head, Nor About money. We Like to tell stories With our Music So the Listener Becomes one With the Story... Theres the Explanation. :)
@tesaga119 That has nothing to do with being fucking Canadian. It's representative of the genre, there's good indie/folk rock everywhere, not just Canada
@bstreich23 Yea I understand I was Just trying To explain The reason, Not Fight With someone Who Dislikes my Country. Yes theres Indie Rock everywhere But i was Explaining The Song, Not patriotism. Jackass. :)
Artists: In the square they raised it up As if it were not their own flesh They left their amour on the parapet Their bodies draped in rough cotton And bolted their feet to the foundation And hammered their nameplate into their chest That was their commitment Then before midnight We watched the others as they tore them down With great violence and pleasure For the foundation must remain bare And that was their offence They never cried out They were beautiful I will remember them
I think that this song is about the worst natural disaster that has ever happened in Canada's history in 1987 in Edmonton. I wasn't even born but my dad said it was pretty big. it caused 27 deaths and $586 Million dollars in damage
I can only hope one day people will compliment me as being "painfully Canadian". In the meantime, can you tell me what Canadian stereotype you're referring to? I don't here any of the most popular ones in this song eh? In fact, I'd wager that if they weren't called Rural Alberta Advantage and singing about a tornado that devastated Edmonton, you probably wouldn't have even known their proud heritage.
The song is badly produced and is obviously Canadian, I picked it out the instant I heard it. You can just tell amateur production quality when you hear it. If I have to explain it to you then you really can't understand what I mean. *shrugs*
Could I ask you to explain what, exactly, "painfully Canadian" is supposed to mean? Aside from being one of the best places to live in the entire world, Canada produces a boatload of really good music. Hawksley Workman, The Tragically Hip, Matt Good, The Arcade Fire. All "painfully Canadian"? Considering all the musical detritus floating around out there, its really sad that you pick a talented band like this to come down on.
@drawdeization Low production value, no hook to speak of, and when there is a modicum of a hook the performer banks on that small aspect alone and completey ignores developing the more meatier parts of the song. Like I said to the other person, if you can't tell the difference then you have no business discussing the subject, really.
@qwertyroffle low production value? i know your used to mainstream music, but the great part about not being mainstream is you can do whatever the fuck you want. is there a hook in many of bob dylans great songs? no. neil young? no. if people like you were in charge wed have the same song reproduced over and over again. if you can't understand artistic creativity you really have no business discussing the subject.
@qwertyroffle This Song Is Actually about a Tornado That Hit a town 30-40 Km Outta My hometown Edmonton... I wasn't born At the time... But still man Show a little respect for the dead... Its not the song, Its the story it tells.
If the vocalist is "ripping" anyone off (the idea of stealing someones voice is pretty ridiculous), he would be ripping off Jeff Mangum or maybe Bob Dylan in a pinch. Not Corgan. Learn your shit sir.
I agree with you all on this tune, I herd it once and thought wow what a great song! Than realized it was about the tornado that ripped through EDM.. A chilly time for all Edmontonians, these guys really show some serious talent and I look forward to hear more from them..
@fancybrit93 Holy sh*t..how did I miss that Graham Scott passed away?? I had no idea...ive been so busy and away for a while I havent got to listen much on Sundays for a while...that sucks..bad...he was great..wow...RIP
Whats up! I'm a straight up Hip Hop Head, but I heard this shit on the radio and for some reason I been hooked on this Band, Better yet they from my home city!! I'ma see them in August in Calgary at the Edge Fest! Good Song!!
I heard this song on Sonic 102.9. Went home that night and looked it up. Loved it!! I was much too young to really remember black Friday, but this song brings all the fear, hope, and pain of that day into perspective. Truly amazing!

@fancybrit93 why are they called the rual alberta advantage then?
tomahawk481 3 months ago in playlist YouTube Mix for The Rural Alberta Advantage
@tomahawk481 Because the singer was raised in Alberta, and when he moved out to Toronto and started a band, they thought it sounded badass.

Voice is a lame Billy Corgan ripoff.
Alter Boy choir in every single chorus is cliche and lame.
The song really goes nowhere, and sounds painfully Canadian.
Thank goodness for 102.9 else they'd never get radioplay.
