@ricglos We don't understand all of the things God's done, but we know that he distinguishes children from adults. Isaiah 7:15-16 speaks of a time in a child's life when he does not yet know right from wrong. I find the clip here to be a very good summary of the gospel. When Hopkins talks about the unbearability of seeing someone you love in pain, to the degree that you want to take their pain onto yourself, he's effectively describing God's self-sacrifice on the cross in the person of Jesus.
