  • I guess it helps to have a nice, sharp knife.

  • This was my first year carving the turkey. My Dad has always done it but he had to work this Thanksgiving. Being the oldest Male in attendance this year it fell on me to carve the bird. I didn't actually cook it though. Essentially the only thing I had to do was the breasts the legs, thighs and wings were not tied or otherwise secured and when transferring from the roasting pan to the carving board they all fell off~ Even after that I still received many compliments on the carving.

  • Great video. You forgot about the wishbone.

  • Omg thanks..never had anyone to show me how.

  • LOL MY 5TH TIME WATCHING THIS DURING THIS HOUR XD

  • I can't believe I watched this and will carve it for the first time for my family, lol. Man of the house should always do it my wife says so it will be my first time. Thanks for this.

  • @KMartinTV funny, same idea in our family, lol.

  • thanks very concise and informative. happy thanksgiving

  • This video has secretly moved my turkey carving from "embarrasing" to "stud carver". Don't tell anybody, but it's been my secret weapon the last three years!

  • I saw several videos about this, and yours is the one I like more. I'll apply your technique tonight. Thank you fornsharing this :)

  • I love this video, thanks. I come here every year because I always forget how to do the legs. Happy Thanksgiving everyone :)

  • Thank you dude!! Very well and detailed.. you just saved my first thanksgiving carving.. cheers.

  • Thank you, Gordon it worked really wel

  • great video, technique works great, thanks Gordon.

  • Is it me or does the guy look like a porn star?

  • Looks delicious. How did you get your turkey so brown and juicy? That's what I would like to know!

  • simple and to the point, this will do the job !

  • This video taught me to carve my first turkey. Come Thursday, I'm about to carve my third and have used this video for the last 3 Thanksgivings to learn how then as a refresher. Thank you, cooking.com for posting it! Please don't ever take it off youtube.

  • Hey, just so you know, I had to carve turkeys for about 300 people today. I've done this for a few years but it wasn't until I saw your video this year until I finally got it down and was carving fast enough to feed all the hungry folks. =)

  • I've used Gordon's techniqe to carve a number of turkeys and it works great. As far as heat, I deep fried a turkey last night, let it rest for about 20 minutes, and while the turkey was plenty warm, it was not scorching hot, and burning my fingers during carving wasn't an issue. This is not a tableside, traditional, Norman Rockwell, pretty turkey technique, but it still makes for a nice presentation, and for a family buffet line, it makes a nice looking and very functional presentation.

  • I start watching this video every year a few weeks before Thanksgiving. Dysdale is a true pro and a great teacher. He has made Thanksgiving turkey carving a breeze for me. Thank you Gordon Drysdale.

  • Great presentation, but that bird has been out of the oven longer than 20 minutes, else he would have burned the crap out of his fingers.

  • @Ducheraked Yep. That's the first thing I discovered when I tried this, after leaving the turkey sit for 20minutes. Great video though - helped me out a lot.

  • u should have used gloves instead of bare hands!

  • I wanna go to that restaurant.

  • ham!

  • Very useful.. My carving didn't turn out as pretty, but I can't expect much when it's my first time ever making and carving a turkey. Thanks for the upload!

  • @r0r34ct I know the feeling. I used this video 2 Thanksgivings ago to carve my first turkey.

  • damn, this wud surely impress a girls dad/mother if u went over for thanksgiven and did this

  • He looks like Stevie Ray Vaughan.

  • Thanks for the video! Watching this made me an instant carving expert!

  • So long as you bring your bird to room temp before you cook it then stuffing inside is fine. It's basic food hygiene to handle food with clean hands, so it goes without saying this guy gas clean hands! Thanks for the video, I'm cooking my first turkey tomorrow & had no idea how to carve before I saw this! X

  • There should be a sign under the moustache/goatee that reads

    "This End Up".

  • Odd looking moustache and a goatee. That's a quality stamp right there.

Serial killers do the best kind of carving.

  • Whoa.. That's awesome... Perfect .. Skilled.. . Just what I was looking for.. Im saving this video for next year. Thanks soooo much.. :)

  • @dtsage

Cooking involves touching and tasting the food. Odds are he washed his damn hands. Now go swim in bleach you hypochondriac

  • @dtsage you are an idiot

  • Do you stick your hands all over other people food when you carve it in front of them or just in kitchen when they're not watching. I'll pass on a turkey prepared by you thank you.

  • @dtsage

They wear gloves at places like Subway and McDonalds, maybe you should stick to those examples of fine dining......

  • @trocthree Your an idiot!!!! This is NOT a fast food chain you dumb fuck, it's a lesson on how to carve a holiday bird! Grab a brain before making yourself look AND sound like a moron!!!

  • @thetileguy1

If you had read carefully, you would have realized that I was replying to some one else's comment. They had suggested the carver wear gloves... Looks like the idiot stone you threw turned out to be a boomerang.

  • @dtsage Nothing is cleaner than clean hands.

  • I finished roasting my turkey 4 hours prior to dinner. How do I keep it fresh and warm?

  • @karn00maccom You'll want to keep it at a low 140(home ovens dont go that low) degrees and it should be fine. However it would be better to finish your bird closer to dinner time =)

  • Watching this video every Thanksgiving afternoon has become a tradition of its own!

  • Thanks Gordon! Appreciate the time you put in on this.

  • @spmcdonald gee gordan!

  • This also works well for a fried turkey

  • Anyone with a QUICK answer --

Could I cook the turkey first, and make the stuffing separately... and tthen stuff the turkey AFTER i take it out of the oven..? Hm?

  • @killedbysnape Probably, but I think it'd taste better letting the stuffing cook inside the turkey. When you take the stuffing out, the flavor would remain. But totally up to you. We always cook the stuffing inside the turkey, then scoop it out afterwards.

  • @ajd1211 Thanks! I'm going to stuff the turkey with some herbs and such for taste, and make "real" stuffing on the side. Which I plan to stuff it with afterwards. Huh, you scoop it out? I've heard a lot of people do that, but most people I know leave the stuffing in. :)

  • @killedbysnape Yeah, we scoop it out and make dressing out of it. My grandma does that all the time, and now my wife does. I couldn't make dressing if my life depended on it. lol!

  • This video helped me carve my first Thanksgiving turkey last year, and it's going to help me carve my 2nd Thanksgiving turkey this year. Thanks, cookingcom!

  • @ajd1211 Ditto on that. After I watched my in-laws butcher a beautiful bird with an old serrated knife, I vowed that I'd never let them do that again. Armed with my Wustoff cutlery and this video, I've been slicing the turkey neatly for the past few years. I always come back to this video before the meal each year for a refresher. Thanks so much cooking.com.

  • seems it's very popular advice that you should cook stuffing outside turkey. why take the trouble, ect, ect. Perhaps it's easier, but I don't buy it tastes the same. Stuffing from a turkey is clearly better, and you can't get it the rest of the year, so I say keep stuffing!

  • seems like a waste of time and effort to put the stuffing in the bird, if all you do is scoop it out immediately. especially because you have to cook the turkey longer just to make sure the stuffing is safe to eat.

  • Thanks !

  • Can you come to my house please!!??

  • @superzack1000 Stop swearing it is agenst the law and obama can put you in jail for swearing and im gonna ban the virginity hit movie of your from space ban it and make a video saying your sorry for everything you did or im telling obama on you because i found his youtube page

  • @mrfred956 he didn't swear...and Obama can't do jack-shit other then give you a spelling and grammar lesson

  • very nice video. I'm more excited for Thanksgiving now.

  • You will need a sharp knife!!! for easy slicing

  • Great video...it's gonna help me carve my first turkey

  • shave that stupid facial hair!

  • Please visit youcookworld (dot) (com) and upload all your cooking videos. Cash prizes available for best cooking videos.

  • don't use your hand on holding the turkey! you use a utensil for holding the turkey! not by bare hand! especially when your wearing a ring!

  • Where's your cutting glove?

  • Thanks for the vid, it came in handy.

  • SO SO SO GOOOOOOOD

  • he looks like a bitch. good video though

  • This worked great. It definitely beat the tear and rip method that I've used before.

  • You've done this before!

  • Try doing this at the dinner table....

  • Good video. I like the latter suggestion of carving the breast. It makes for a neater slice. Thanks.

  • Thanks Gordon, You're awesome!

  • This video is great. Thanks a bunch. Happy turkey day everyone

  • I like this tutorial because it gives two options for carving the breast and also shows how to joint it. Nice job. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

  • Thats nice but, you can't do this at the table while people are watching.... NO Hands or board on center piece turkey....?!

  • Thanks for the video! You are a life saver! :D

  • thats my nig, I love the way he carves turkey.

  • Great presentation!!!

Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family!!!!!!!

  • Happy Thanksgiving from Las Vegas!

    Excellent video.

Should help me from annihilating the bird like I did last year. LOL

  • i use a chainsaw

  • FIrst year to carve a turkey, lol, Great vid

  • This is such an excellent presentation. Simple and very clear. Thanks and happy thanksgiving.

  • The vegetarians are right. There is a place for all God's creatures....right next to taters and gravy!!!

  • this is my first year to carve a turkey. Hope I do it right! Say a prayer, in case I cut off a finger!

  • the best part of this video was at the end wen the recommend videos pop up.

  • Why are vegetarians watching a turkey carving video? lol

  • cutting the breast meat with the grain makes is chewy. Carving it against the grain makes it juicier.

  • which method was against the grain?

  • the way he demonstated that started at 1:45

  • blah blah blah. shut the fuck up vegetarians, you only live once, enjoy your damn food!

  • they can enjoy a tofu shaped turkey!

  • Meat is Murder!......Sweet....Sweet Murder.

  • Ahhh ya looks great.

  • GOD IT WAS SO DELICIOUS!

  • You think a plant wants to be ripped out of the ground. What the Lettuce likes it?

  • The turkey he is carving in the video has been sitting for over an hour. It wouldn't surprise me if it was in the fridge. I don't care what anybody says. If you let that turkey set for 20 minutes like he said. There should have been some steam still coming out of it when he was carving. This dude is full of crap.

  • Good eat'in pal! Too bad you brought into that PETA babble. You don't know what you are missing, however, when nobody is looking I bet my last dollar you grab a nice piece of that tasty skin and swallow it whole!!! It's OK, we all understand your issues.LOL!!!

  • Hey Asshat- What the fuck did your carrots do to you? Why do you abuse and eat poor vegetables?

This shit needs to end people.

Search Google Video for the following two videos:

    1. Meet Your Vegetables

    2. Groundlings

    Asshat......

  • you make it look so easy. excellent

  • ha ha! his mustache and goatee make an arrow..."up my nose with a rubber hose"

  • @thatmanphil1 Damn you, that's all I see now lol

  • The turkey looks delicious. Is it best to add seasoning before cooking, or after?

  • before

  • was ist das ihr scheiß Engländer ihr nennt unser stolz und ehre für das beste land einen huhN mein gott ihr seid solche fettsäcke aldRr

  • Beautiful carving job. But this bird must have been cooled off to some degree for you to be able to handle it so much. I'd like to see how to carve a piping hot (though rested) one, where you'd have to use a carving fork.

  • i bet you fucked that turkey before you cooked it

  • Cause that's such a normal occurrence...

  • I carved a turkey like that this week and it was perfect! I'd never successfully carved a turkey before but it was fast and easy, and it turned out beautifully. Thanks for posting this!

  • i'm no vegetarian, but I feel for that turkey.

  • espcially when he popped the hip socket.

  • Fcd Turkey.I like fckd turmey meat.

  • the dark meat it more tender

  • Grilled turkey mmmmmmmmmmm yummy.

  • death or death to bush bush's ass amrekika given that those on the rights of orphans in Iraq unfledged dishonest to the other world, how

  • CARVING? just give everyone their own turkey. no need for carving.

  • so true LOL and let them carve it in their own way XD

  • I shall definitely be using this method today - thanks for the tip...Merry Christmas

  • That looks great I'm doing a turkey for Christmas and will be carving one for the first time! Many thanks!

  • Screw you it's my choice to eat meat! Besides Veganism is unhealthy most vegans I have met were pale, emaciated and had bad eyesight.

  • They just needed a tan and some contact lens.lol

  • how the hell you gonna save the planet by being like you? what we need to do is clean the air not stop eating meat. whats wroung with you? i want steaks, pizza, turkeys, chicken, porkchops, hotdogs and at the same time clean the air by not useing my car and driveing haha

  • lol, check out one of my video to understand. Merry Christmas!!

  • naw maybe your should google new world order and see what the world mines to the united nations

  • New world order is a conspiracy theory in the past. They have no proof of anything, just science fiction. It's interesting though, my friends are all into that.

  • lol. yeah sure. you might as well pack all the animals in your house and save them from the north american union haha

  • how about not breeding them from now on.

  • Your an idiot, sorry a fucking idiot!

  • why are you calling yourself an idiot sorry a fucking idiot. lol

  • BUT THE TURKEY'S MAMA CRY!

  • Dear god guys, can we keep the politics out of our food? I've had enough of it from work, airsoft, TV, internet.....I don't think I'm the only one that'd like solace from political BS either

  • This is great, thank you.

Or, we could try it Sarah Palin style, using a hand grenade.

  • Great video. seems like I'm always refreshing my memory on how to carve a bird on thanksgiving day. so glad this video was available. I'd hate to do it like Joe Biden or Barack Obama by faking my way through it, shooting my big mouth off and completely messing up the whole dinner.

  • lol

  • Sorry to be offensive. You have a point. Happy Thanksgiving.

  • sorry. have a happy holiday

  • you too, my friend.

  • GREAT JOB!!!! Thanks for the vid...you gonna make me look good.

  • Great Job on this!!!

  • Thank you for saving my Thanksgiving! We realised none of us knew how to carve a turkey, and your video saved the day! Thanks again!!!

  • Der Gordon!

Thanks for posting. I just want to recommend you remove your wedding ring before working with food. Tight place between ring and the finger is where the microbes like to hide. (HACCP standard). Anyway, thanks 4 posting your otherwise great presentation.

  • Great job.. Great video. Great attitude while showing us your stuff.

    Happy Thanksgiving!

  • Thank you! Very useful! :-)

  • Great instructions, best I've seen so far!

  • Great how-to video!

  • nice board

  • Good job.

  • that turkey looks delish!!!

  • sounds good to me and his knife skills were fine he was going slowly to show how to do it so pump the brakes i dont see you with a awesome job like his.

  • I think this a very helpful video. It looks easy and the way it is arranged on the platter is beautiful, I will use this technique on thankstiving this year.

  • i um hungry

  • Informational and funny.

  • make turkey sandwiches with the rest of the meat off the bird...omg im so hungry right now!XD

  • preeesentation, got it

  • what do people do w/ the rest of the turkey?

  • i boil the hell out of it and make soup

  • never boil it my friend

  • hip is the best part of the bird.

  • Im just giving a hint: Work on your knife using abilities and watch for your fingers. I am amazed that you didnt cut them off.

  • good job, where is my dad?

  • professional
