From my perspective, the trailer doors are open and he is backed into a dock, so his trailer is being unloaded or loaded. How long does that take? 45 min.? an hour?. If it was me, no, I couldn't stand the confines of a day cab. I would go take a nap in the lunch room. A diesel burns between .5 to 1 gallon an hour. Our taxes do help sustain the USPS.
I'm the wife of a truck driver and I'd much rather him take a nap while waiting for them to load his truck, than him run sleepy and end up killing himself or someone else or taking drugs so he can stay away just to appease your indignation that he was " sleeping on the job". As for the gas, do the math about idleing 18 wheelers. I can totally understand initial shock at seeing something, but research it first please.
@fuddmethen -- there's no hiding whatsoever. I needed to be a certain distance away in order to capture the entire truck and be in position to catch the driver sleeping. I only momentarily passed the bagel sign to get a shot form the front of the truck. I couldn't film inside the parking lot because there is another sign not seen in the video that states the loading dock area is "federal property" and "Joe Blows" are not allowed inside. I could've been seen by the driver but he needs to be awake
Actually the usps is totally self sufficient and dont use YOUR tax dollars, they pay with everything with stamps, postal merchandise, and parcels. Know your facts before you post...
@fuddmethen --- yes they are a separate company but run by the federal government who must approve rate increases they constantly proposes. Your logic is like saying the DMV is a self sufficient company because they rely on revenue from vehicle registration fees and traffic tickets, and who are we kidding, it's all a tax.. and one more thing, gas and diesel fuel are nearly identical in price so it all wastes all the same when you let it run.
Everybody wants to be an investigative reporter now days because of You-Tube. It is so pathetic. I could understand if this guy was smoking crack and then driving the truck but he is taking a nap, which is a good idea for truck drivers, while waiting for his load to be unloaded.
his complaining about the idling truck, wasting tax $; more research into it, he wouldnt of used a gallon unless he was there for 4-5hours; and being in the middle of summer, the aircon needs a running truck, as the ac belt needs to turn.
And please note; how long was the driver really there for?; had you just been walking down the street; as he might of just pulled up, and is taking a powernap.
I've seen drivers have to waste gas like this even over a standard piece of mail. At orders from the big bosses. Catching a nap to be alert is no big deal. The higher offices wanting the drivers to waste gas on a 60 mile trip to deliver a sales paper to our office that is a waste of money. How about cutting the people in the big offices who sit on their ass and twiddle their thumbs and give out orders to really waste gas especially with gas prices as they are today. Thank you for posting tho
I have to say I have worked for the post office for over 5 years ..and just recently the people in charge are doing alot of crazy stuff .. idling a truck by a driver is nothing compared to what the decisions from higher up have been ..this driver idling his truck ..nothing wrong with it. My route in the winter time I have to get in and let it run just to warm up. We have drivers being ordered to drive over 60 miles one way to deliver one or two letters to our office. I've seen even a standard
before you go around filming truck driver's idle like a sissy boy. think about a few things. first dont you idle your car on a cold day before you get in it, guess what your breaking the law also. Second this guys gets up at 1 am to get to work and works 12 hour days. as far as understanding how it is with long haul drivers who dont have heat at night when its 10 F why dont you turn off all your heat in your house and try to sleep just once. but i bet your too much of a sissy boy
@cypris2002 This video was filed in the summer, so your none of your gay whining about keeping warm on a cold day applies here, and how do you know what time this guy gets up anyway. Besides I know this guy is a short haul driver. He picks up mail from post office to post office and drops it all off at the processing facility which is no more than a 10 mile trip. The USPS lost $8.5 billion last year in part due to this behavior.Keep this in mind when the post office asks for another rate hike.
If he's long hauling, they've surely given him an insane route schedule. If dock guys said, "We'll be ready for you in about 10 minutes or so, so hang out for now," that's a smart way to use the time, That nap will have a lasting effect to his safety and others around him, for hours on the highway. I've done long haul before. Dock waiting is a nap opportunity, even encouraged by bosses. I hate trucking now days. The life, the higher ups. I'm 4.0 in comp sci, in school, because of. Motivation.
@WasteTime4Passwords ... This is not long hauling. This driver does local pickups for the post office. The issue though, is not necessarily the sleeping, its the idling of the truck while sleeping on the job. He should have shut the truck off before his nap. He must've wasted a gallon of gas doing this. This all adds up. Its something to think about when the post office requests another rate increase.
@Steve98NYy12550 Yes it factors in. Large salaries factor in. Fuel. One thing they do that is very efficient though, like in all trucking, is whether long or short, once they hand the guy a rig, they're going to get their money's worth by working that guy max hours. I've never grabbed a 53' box and had less then an illegal day....lol. Maybe it's just guys with under 20 years exp. ;)
what a fuckin bitch

Oh and one more thing, dont be a pussy hiding behind signs, do it right out in the open, and that truck runs on DIESEL fuel, not gas

Post office is a profit making company. Your tax dollars don't pay for salary or gas. They sell a product. Stamps and postage.
