the long trips driving to Anchor Point Alaska with my dad from Anchorage to go fishing. Every weekend all summer. That winding hwy next to turnagain arm, portage glacier, turnagain pass, Kenai lake, Kenai river the sky blue water. moose river, seldolvia, soldotna.kenai, russian river, homer, ice fishing grouse creek just a little camper. eagle river. beach lake. ft rich. muldoon. before the glen was widened. Thanks for taking care of my mom. R.I.P. Lloyd Dunham. Great dad.
I was listening to RTL2 French radio and heard what I thought was "Wild West End" but it turned out to be a French singer (Jean Louis Aubert) singing "Maintenant Je Reviens" virtually the same intro - see what you think. Anyway, I agree with all the comments made about a great number by a unique talent. Nevertheless Mark, please move away from the Celtic sound of recent albums. It's nice but it hasn't the same feeling of your earlier albums which left us all speechless.
The 'Wild West End' has now been rebranded 'Midtown' by the business 'improvement' department, and is full of CCTV cameras, foreigners and clone shops and food places like Pret a Manger and McDonalds.
First heard this song when I was about 8 and it always struck me as the weakest song on the album. Now, as I've matured, I see that it's possibly the greatest, or at least up with "Down to the Waterline" and "Sultans." I love the casual conversation. (Excuse me for talkin', I wanna marry you.) Mark had just matured more than a man his age should have by then. Love it!
@34doublea funny you should say that... it was exactly the same for me. I didn't much like this song at the time, but I loved the rest of the album. Now this is one of my favorites... besides Water of Love anyway.
Great example of Dire Straits doing what they do best ... bringing London's gritty side to light ... Mark's beautiful guitar work ... don't know much about drummers but Pick Withers is something else.
First heard this in 79 hitch hiking Between Montreal Que. and Kitchener Ontario on Easter weekend.Smoked a joint with my ride and he put this tape on. I bought the cassette off of that ride then and there, 10 dollars. It was a great weekend for an 18 year old. I can remember every minute when I hear this.
Dig this ear candy, friends. Track #8 on the Dire Straits seminal debut vinyl. This is not a tune that got a lot of radio time like Sultans of Swing. You can really hear the influence and love of American southern guitar and resonator styles on Knopfler's easy and laid-back picking, and the slow, unhurried pace of this lazy shuffle. This was 1978. Fantastic!
I love this song. Always have. I still look at these guys and wander if they had any idea of what they were talking about. The end of the lyrics are so childish, and then again maybe ...honest. I'm a girl, from Venus. Maybe I'll never know.
@Tily0507 'go-go dancing girls ...?' They do know what they were talking about, as they'd all been living in London for well over a year at the time of writing! I see what you mean, but at the time Soho in the West End was an internationally notorious red-light district, so I think the line refers to a go-go 'girl' forced to 'dance' far beyond when she would have quit. I've seen this kind of sad stuff myself. I think it's a critism of the sex industry in London at that time.
@saddlehome Well thank you. Since I wasn't even born then, and far away from London, I always thought of the guy as a poor loner going to those bars. He is not Mick, falling in the arms of this girl at the Memory Motel and experiencing it to the fullest. This guy is blocked, and even though he doesn't know it, Mandy might as well be in charge of things. I mean, friend just rhymes with "end" and he won't be able to tell an angel in the crowd. Beaten. This is a lucky song.
My Uncle Alistair gave me this Album as a present for my 12th birthday. I can never ever be grateful enough for introducing me to the style and class that is Mark & DS.
Surely one of the great love songs of the 20th century?
