Same thing happening to me.... went to the apple store and they said it may be a bad 'file' whatever that means, so they said to restore it and set it up as a new ipad not a back up. So I did, it made it worse. Turns out my iPad was a faulty one and i had to get it replaced.
Mine is doing the same the thing. My first one worked fine, until the baby cracked the screen, last week. I took it in and they charged me $350 + iPad 2 w/broken screen and gave me a refurbished unit. I've had this one for less than a week and it just now started shutting itself off. I guess I'll have to bring it down, tomorrow. Fortunately, in Glendale, CA, we have two Apple stores within 1 mile of me!
I have the exact same problem. Took it to the store but they did not manage to sort out the problem, now I have to go to Mac service, waste of time and money, I should have bought the samsung.
I would take it back to wherever you purchased it. The customer service reps stated that mine was a hardware issue. It is a defect. There is a problem with the magnets in the device.
This is more than likely a faulty read switch which turns the iPad on and off when a Smart Cover is connected. Try running a magnet along the right edge of the iPad and see if that helps shift the switch...
It is not the sleep wake button because we have tried that. My husband is a "computer guy" We live 3 hours from an apple store but you are damn right we are going to drive 3 hours this weekend to take this piece of you know what back!
I waited over three weeks and paid a ton of money for this "bad luck"
its a sleep/wake button issue. try just pressing it a few times. it may be stuck. or take it back to the store and swap it! bad luck i guess. at least apple are good enought to just replace it if you take it back to them
