  • ' my thoughts are many miles away, they lie with you when you're asleep,,,, kiss you when you start the day ' . . . Say no more !

  • The original performer of this song was Paul Simon, not Art Garfunkel. Though Art did sing this song in concert a few years ago, I don't think he ever recorded it. I like Eva Cassidy's version, she has a lovely voice-- but somehow Simon's version feels more personal and powerful.

  • @amjordan I did clarify the misread of what I wrote in 2007. Please read my complete comments at the top. Also, Art did record this song-I first saw it on YouTube. Anyway, thanks for making a comment on the video.

  • @Joner888 Thanks for the response. But I still find the comments unclear or misleading. I think it would be most accurate if it read, "We know, of course, this song was written and originally performed by Paul Simon. Art Garfunkel has also performed the song in concert (and recorded his own version?)...." By the way, when did Garfunkel record a version of this song? I know he sang it in concert, but did he record a studio version? That is what I meant by my comment.

  • I love my name, haha (:

  • Strength,Sister

  • Never heard Eva's version before and it's just exquisite. I'm a huge Paul Simon fan and usually don't like covers of his songs but this is a major exception. Don't quibble about the words. I'd bet money P. Simon would love Eva's cover. He's a generous performer and I wonder if they ever met. Anyone know?

  • @msandisue Paul Simon recommended Eva's version of this song over his own for the movie "Maid in Manhattan". So, they put this version in there.

  • @badleeroy Thank for that info - I'm glad to hear this. Paul Simon is a really generous performer - any musician working with him has always said this - and that story is one more confirmation. I'm proud to say he's an alumnus of my high school and he are Artie were legends there (he graduated 6 years before me).

  • Never fails to draw tears for the simple beauty of such a rare voice, now making heaven SUCH a better place for her presence there. Bless you Eva. Missed, stolen from us ! xxxxxxxxxxx

  • I love this simon and garfunkel are 2 of my faverate singers and eva done an amazing job with this, I wish she had covered heaven can wait by meat loaf anouther song im sure she would have done amazing job with

  • I wrap this beautiful and strong song around me. I identify with every warp and weft and it keeps me warm. Its my armor.

  • I can't stop to listen this song. Beautiful beyond beauty.

  • What a beautiful voice. I 've never heard of her. Thank's for this chance.

  • What a tremendous and versatile talent-an incredible voice! I only wish I had heard of her when she was alive! I have all of her CDs.

  • beautiful voice

  • It's hard to believe she has paralyzing stage fright.

  • It's horrible that she died young, before realizing how beloved her gift would be to so many people. And yet in some strange way I am glad that she was spared the "star making machinery". There's a certain humble straightforwardness in her singing and often overlooked guitar skills. She does tremendous vocal feats, but never for a reaction. It's pure. I'm not saying "only the good die young" or any crap like that. Just that I'm glad Eva wasn't spoilt by fame. Her motives are beyond reproach. x

  • @Misskosovojeserbia YES, Melanoma : (

  • Absolutely thrilling, Thank-you Eva.

  • she is an angel no doubt about it, i have lost 5 members of my family to that awfull thing that took this voice from us. love u eva your voice helps me cope with my loss thank u R I P eva XXXXXXX

  • A more beautiful voice...and those words are not adequate, I've never heard. RIP angel.

  • Didn't like cover versions untill i heard this lady sing now it don't seem to matter any more !

  • I always wondered what was going on on that recording of her doing only a few of the verses of this, like, was the club owner trying to get home early that night, or what?

More likely I figure the emotion just overcame her and she just had to let it go. I've been there. What an angel!

  • Love love love her. She was born the same year as my daughter. We lost a talented lady.Have all her CD's.

  • Joner888; the first version of this was on 'The Paul Simon Songbook' which he recorded in London in 1965. He was sharing a flat with Al Stewart and Jackson C. Frank. (Paul produced Jackson's album 'The blues run the game'.

  • Sometimes I just want to cry when I here her singing, it is so gentle, so beautiful, so perfect

Att. Alex Vega de Guayaquil - Ecuador.

  • How I would have loved to hear her sing especially this and A Heart in New York with Artie (sorry Paul and Yes I love your writing and your solo versions too ;-)

  • @SDD3204 Strange, I had the same idea some days ago, thank you for expressing it. Eva and Art are the greatest singers ever.

  • great voice and acoustics well done eva you are incredibly missed. xoxox

  • Not bad. But some S&M-cover at:

    graceland-online.de

  • Paul Simon wrote (v3) 'diffused' not 'confused'; a much more elegant image and a keen sense of aliteration - check out the home recording and the version on 'Sound of Silence'

  • What is it with the polite applause at the end of the performance? If I had been there, I would have been kissing her feet at the end. What a talent, incredible.

  • my nech hair is standing, and my bodey are covrd in goosebumps :)

  • WTF is not to like about this song? Sung here with as much feeling as anyone could (in my humble opoinion).

Some people need to get a life and start living!

    Live forever EVA.

  • @357HFC You're right. This is sung with feeling and totally maintains the integrity of what I regard as one of Paul Simon's very best compositions.

  • I wish you were still here and made really beautiful song. . Miss you tho i didnt know you before

  • Great song Kathy. My Dad died 1 month before you did... Same affliction! Will forever remember this tune for the rest of my life!

  • That's beautiful, and I'd never heard this version before. And it's one of my favorite tunes ever.

  • I never thought I'd ever love my favorite Simon and Garfunkel song sung by some one else. I guess I was wrong BIG TIME.

  • This version is superb.

Wonderful ! Sincerely I love this song.

  • 5 notes and such a wonderfull song, just great 5***** beautifull....... :-))))

  • Maravillosa interpretación. Me ha puesto los pelos de punta.

    Desde la emoción, muchas gracias.

  • norburt53--go and discern somewhere else

  • Norbury53--dont worry -I'm a good swimmer

  • No thank you, brilliant

  • Norbury53--just disappear and kindly allow us to appreciate this matchless voice.

    A devoted Aussie

  • @poopsienoremac Take a long walk of a short pier.

    A discerning Aussie

  • Ruined? No, this isn't ruined. This is **exquisite.**

  • Totally ruined by inappropriately changing the words.

  • @Norbury53 you're an asshat..."totally ruined"?!? please...

  • @handsomerube Not sure what an asshat is but it sounds hurtful... ooooooo....

I repeat, and I am an Eva Cassidy fan, that she stuffed this one up totally.

Why change the words? Did she forget them? What did the new words add to the song?

  • @Norbury53 If you don't like it then that' s your opinion. Have the grace to stop listening and commenting on the opinion of those who disagree with your opinion.

  • Comment removed

  • @terrho7 There is something recursively offensive about your comment terrho7.

  • I would like to see a goundswell of public support to bring Eva's music to the lofty heights that her output would have reached had she lived... Vin Smith

  • @wanturlove She's a big name in some countries (like the UK).

  • @wanturlove I'd support that. Music should always have a collaborative element, but in this day and age of competitive, ego-filled, and steroid boosted music, Eva could still out-sing and out-perform those who sing, simply because they want to be famous. She could still do this and continue to do so, from the grave, simply because her recorded work captures a rare and beautiful quality that just captivates!

  • Monkey see, monkey do.....

  • Absolutely amazing.

  • E-ve-ry time I listen to Eva Cassidy, I get goosebumps from the sixpack I do not have down to my knees. What is it? What happends??

  • Eva..you reached down my throat..and shhok my heart...This is the most beautiful cover of this song I have ever heard.....Bravo!!

  • Miranda - we need to do this.

  • I will always Love Eva even though I never met her I feel like she is one of my closet friends!

  • There should have been a trio named Simon Garfunkel and Braun. Might have been a poetic inner city Peter Paul and Mary.

  • @74norton850 I haven't read all the comments, but please correct your error or remove your post. You must have meant Simon, Garfunkel and Cassidy. (not Braun) which is a rather unfortunate faux pas.

  • Haunting, beautiful, and heartfelt...caught me off-guard I must say...you know how most tube-covers are ; )

  • Oh .. how I miss Eva and her voice ..

  • Even though the recording quality has a lot of wow and flutter... there's the live feeling that still comes through. I first became aware of her when Nightline with Chris Brury sp? brought her to my attention. Then I later saw that for an "unprecedented" 2nd time Nightline rebroadcast it... and finally I saw George Stephanopoulos do the honors for a third time. If I had my way they'd do it every year. She's that deserving.

  • I have every one of her albums--she is a gem with one of the most beautiful voices I have ever heard. So sad to lose her so early. She was sent to us from somewhere special and they must have wanted her back.

  • love eva cassidy but have to say that this is a terrible recording of her... very poor quality (still better than 99% of profesional recordings of anyone else of course)

  • The angels choir was incomplete without her voice. Love this song and her version of it.

  • i love EVA CASSIDY!

  • I heard this song played during the soundtrack of the movie "Maid in Manhattan". It's perfect for Eva's voice.

  • Such a wonderfull tallent, a voice to make angels cry. Bless you for touching our lives with your prodigious gift.

  • This is so beautiful..her voice so pure..it always makes me cry.God Bless Her..

  • @tiger16pink So true. It is hard to listen to an Eva Cassidy performance without the tears starting to flow.

  • I 've seen many of music's "legends" perform through the years, but I think I would trade them all to have seen Eva !

  • Eva will never fade away....she will always be in the hearts of those who have heard her sing.

  • She's not gone. She lives on here on YouTube, in her albums, in our hearts and souls....

  • such a sad day when you left us eva. what a amazing voice. your an angel your guitar playing is out of this world. a saint gone to heaven .

  • Magic

  • Love Eva. Check out my version of this song

  • such a sad waste. what a lovley voice. REST IN PEACE your an angel. your playing is out of this world.

  • @easunote since we don't know why she left when she did or why she had to go or what she's up to now, its not fair to talk of "waste". I for one believe she went the way she was meant to, and so shall I. How many of the great saints prophets and poets left early? too many for it to be a coincidence

  • God speed Eva. May you be aware of how may hearts your voice still moves so many years after you left. Thank you.

  • so sad.. she was taken from us MUCH too soon! TY for posting this!!

  • Thank you God for giving us Eva...

  • my favorite song when im sad

  • @kathy71983 We are on the same page

  • danke, eva!

  • Beautiful song, beautiful voice. She is the one singer who stops me in my tracks and I just need to sit quietly and let her voice wash over me.

  • angel

  • Her guitar playing is simpler than Paul Simon's...her voice has less gravity or sense of loss within it...when you hear Paul singing it...you can hear the emotion and the hurt and the loss!

    But it's still very good!

  • @Winterlightsky I actually feel more gravity and sense of loss when she sings this, more so than Paul Simon's.. even though he's very good, too. I feel this one much more deeply.

  • it doesnt matter joner888!

  • I love you Nat x

  • @UnifiedPerfection Your still not here, but I still love you Nat x

  • This is amazing.

  • This is much better than the Simon and Garfunkel version.

  • *Aching Voices, Clear* When the winds turn, and sing In places held close and dear, softly Heard, like melting snows in New Spring Those aching voices, clear... Her song comes to us then, in pensive Quiet joy Her soul sails with us, and We go on... She goes with us She goes on... _____________________________________________ In memory of Eva Cassidy
  • It is so sad that so many are spending their time trying to identify wether or not she has deviated from the original words. Suffice to say this is the most perfect interpretation to my mind and it belongs to her, be grateful that we have been privilaged enough to be able to share it. Thank you Eva

  • @Stormonnormon

    Well said...

  • I wish she had recorded Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah. Love her voice so much I googled her and couldnt believe that she has passed, I only found her the other day and now know I have truly fallen in love with an Angel, God has truly blessed me by allowing me to hear you sing. Be at peace beautiful lady.

  • @Stormonnormon Eva Cassidy beautiful singer, it would've been interesting to have heard her sing that song but even it had happen it would've hard for me to believe anyone could have sang it better then Jeff Buckley.

  • Such a beautiful voice. Been a fan for a long time.

  • I know a guy who has always been totally into Eva .... and I can fully understand why

  • We truly lost a great gift when we lost her. Imagine what else she could have created if she had more time. I am very thankful that we have these treasured gifts of song from her to remind us.

  • wowo she have a beautiful voicee

  • what a voice you won't hear one like that on x-factor wannabees pure class elvis frank sinatra simon and garf did'nt have to try to sing they all could because they were born to sing god given talent did'nt have to try!

  • thank you Eva...I've loved you since the first time I heard you and more and more since...I know you're with God so we'll all be together again soon...rest in peace. Please keep your dermatology appointments in heaven...ok? Love.

  • I think it should be "soft and warm continually" not "continuing" but i love this song!

  • love you eva thx for your music,,,,,,,,,,,,

  • has anyone ever had a video of Eva performing?

  • @cesarneri3 Long ago I have seen footage of this Live at Pearls solo gig. But it has been removed from YouTube I think. Someone there filmed it for private use. I am not sure if one can obtain a DVD copy of it.

  • @cesarneri3 If you read the info and watch the documentary the OP uploaded, you'll see some of the footage.

  • this is a nice cover, but noone can top paul's origional because soooo much emotion is poured into every word when he sings it. kathy chitty was a very lucky girl and she clearly didnt know it. what a lovely song to have written for you. if he'd written that for me in 1965 i'd hav married him nxt day!

  • I have listened very closely, and I believe she says "but for the grace of you."

  • Beautiful version of this well loved Simon and Garfunkel song, by the late Eva Cassidy.

  • Such a beautiful song!!!!!!!

  • @robbie69612 Every single song I hear from Eva makes me cry. Just knowing that her voice could make me totally relaxed. RIP you sweet angel sent to us from god. We can all look forward to hearing her sing again up in heaven. My request is to have her waiting for me to sing me somewhere over the rainbow.

  • @msRAT1962 Yes I know what you mean. I start to tear up even though I'm not sad. It's just the shear beauty of her voice. Very, very few artists can reach this level. I cannot think of anyone in rock, pop, folk, etc who had a more beautiful voice. Nobody.

  • So beautiful...and peaceful...perfect!

I just taped my own version of this song! come and listen to me !

  • Joner888, where can one obtain this longer version? Only the shorter versions are available in the stores.

  • I`m going to chuck my guitar in the river and take up anothr hobby like golf or something

  • I`m going to chuck my guitar in the river and get another hobby

  • to Joner888 Don't understand. Those are the final words that PS wrote and sang on 'Songbook, and 'Sounds of Silence' albums. But hey why quibble; we'd just be raindrops disputing the beauty of the shower!

  • I'd like Charice to sing this song live.

  • "there before the grace of you go I".

    Whats its always said

  • @thegazzamataz she clearly says "there BUT for the grace of you go I", listen and you hear the T

  • Wow...i'm enchanted! what a beautiful song! I call that the genius of simplicity...it may not be simple to play but it sounds so easy...

If some are interested I mostly play folk songs on my channel with my guitar...pay me a visit!

  • Like hearing a beautiful song for the first time, again.

  • Eva's interpretation of this song will stand forever

  • Her version of Sting's Fields of Gold

    and Christine McVie's Songbird

    are just phenomenal

Eva was and STILL IS an artist that record companies

can NEVER change. Eva never recorded because

    A. She refused and B. Because Record lables wanted

to "cage" her music and she played EVERYTHING with

such honesty and perfection "they" couldn't touch her.

Yet, Eva did, does and will ALWAYS touch every one of us.

    Rest, sweet Eva... rest

  • There's only one instance in the world where anyone sings a Simon and Garfunkel song better than Simon and Garfunkel sing it themselves, and this is it. @jonno52 said it perfectly. Sublime.

  • Can't listen to Eva do this kind of thing without tears streaming down my face, old fool that I am. Sublime.

  • It's rare that someone's performance could actually bring me to tears but she has just done that......Absolutely amazing........

  • How can people continue eating when Eva sings and plays? She's stunning.

  • RIP Eva! A talent that nobody can replace!

  • @grobangirlie

All her stuff was live. Even when they put it on CD's. She never had a recording contract. After she died they put a bunch of her live and demo tapes on CD's and it sold...."Time after Time" should have it.

  • Does anyone know which album this live version is on? I can only find the shortened, album version?

  • Amazing version. Absolutely amazing.

  • Amazing version. Absolutely amazing.

  • Amazing version. Absolutely amazing.

  • for ScottTennant, if you listen carefully to the words Eva sings, she does say"there before the grace of you go I". Whether she just made a mistake singing the words this way or she intentionally changed the words, I don't know and I guess we will never know because she is not here to tell us.

  • @Joner888 There are several changes in Eva's version. She sings, "To a land where my heart lies", instead of Simon's "To England...", and she changes diffused to confused(which actually makes more sense). I'm sure Paul wouldn't mind - he probably wishes he had thought of some of the changes.

I'm so glad we have people introducing this wonderful woman to other generations.

  • @Joner888 I am DEAD sure she changed just the words. She could do this anytime she wanted and make it work. Same way she could add the harmonics (those precise little high bits) just cos she wanted to do it that way.

  • @jdheather1 Lyrics are the original by Paul Simon. She did not change them, but surely sings them like an angel. :)

  • @Joner888 There but for the grace of you go I

is the original lyrics by Paul Simon.

  • @Joner888 She actually sing "there but for the grace of you I go" It just soo fast that it sound like before....if you listen carefully it sounds more like she's leaving out the 'u' - there b't for the grace of you I go...

  • @Joner888 Yea, but she also says that on the studio version, so.....? She left out/changed a few of the words to this song. & on the studio version, the line "to England where my heart lies" is not in there. Personally I like her version better than S&G's, & that says a lot because I REALLY like Simon & Garfunkel.

  • @Joner888

She didn't make any mistake singing the words, these are as they were written by Paul Simon in 1965.

  • @frostie340: Actually the words should be "There but for the grace of you go I". It stems from an idiomatic expression in English ('There but for the grace of God go I"), meaning "I would likely have been in trouble, hadn't God been watching over me." Paul replaced "God" by "you", referring to his lover Kathy. Paul attributes to her the power to protect him from dying like the raindrops do, falling from the sky without destination or beliefs. Only Kathy can keep him from a similar aimlessness.

  • @Joner888 Interesting............but on close scrutiny, I hear her using the correct verbage although I can see how others might hear it differently.

  • @Joner888 It doesn't matter--this is still ASTOUNDING! Thanks so much for posting this. It never fails to bring tears to my eyes--not from sadness, but from pure BEAUTY.

  • @Joner888

    I listened to paul simon

he sings the lyric" there before the grace of you go I"

Thanks for posting , I would never hear this beauty without your help.

  • @Joner888 The change was intentional... there are several other words in the song that have been changed as well. At the time, to cover and record another artist's song, one had to change a certain number of words in the song..... : )

  • When i listen to her, everything in the world is good. Her voice makes my heart weep!

  • When i listen to her, everything in the world is good. Her voice makes my heart weep!

  • When i listen to her, everything in the world is good. Her voice makes my heart weep!

  • When i listen to her, everything in the world is good. Her voice makes my heart weep!

  • To say Eva's version of this song is "beautiful" is understatement. I don't quite know the exact word to describe it.

One question: On Eva's website and in the lyrics on this page, the last line of the song is rendered "there before the grace of you go I." But I believe the original S&G version is "there but for the grace of you go I," which makes sense given the popular phrase "there but for the grace of God go I." Is this just a transcription error, or did Eva really sing it that way?

  • @ScottTennant - I never noticed that because I was not familiar with the original lyrics but I immediately drew what may (and I underscore MAY) have been the conclusion Eva intended : that the singer is saying she is being allowed by the one she loves to walk before him in the light of his grace. I read her intent as a statement of acknowledgement and gratitude.

  • I lover her version and the extolled girl so much :))

  • She was amazing...what a loss that she is gone...Great picking style and lovely interpretation on the guitar....wonderful dynamics...fine contrasting...wow. I love this.

  • Linda voz,perfeita....me faz sonhar,viajar.Obrigada!

  • Her guitar playing is wonderful as well! I mostly prefer to listen to Eva and just her guitar. The intimacy, strength and tenderness of hervoice and musicianship cannot be topped...

    Eva, you were the best.

  • I don't know why I spend my time writing songs I can't believe.

  • My friend sang this in front of the whole school, it was one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard! And her dad played the guitar soo harmonic..

  • Voce e chitarra struggenti. Davvero brava.

  • Ho scoperto solo recentemente il talento di Eva Cassidy, grande voce e una chitarra struggente.

La sua voce meravigliosa resterà per sempre nei nostri cuori.

  • Eva Cassidy.....so full of life when she was singing. So, so sad that her life ended at such a young age.

Lovely, lovely voice, ah yes, such amazing talent. "Ah, but there for the grace of you go I."

Eva, may you rest in peace for all time..

  • beautiful as ever , so peaceful yes i am an Eva Cassidy fan , thank you for posting.
