The original performer of this song was Paul Simon, not Art Garfunkel. Though Art did sing this song in concert a few years ago, I don't think he ever recorded it. I like Eva Cassidy's version, she has a lovely voice-- but somehow Simon's version feels more personal and powerful.
@amjordan I did clarify the misread of what I wrote in 2007. Please read my complete comments at the top. Also, Art did record this song-I first saw it on YouTube. Anyway, thanks for making a comment on the video.
@Joner888 Thanks for the response. But I still find the comments unclear or misleading. I think it would be most accurate if it read, "We know, of course, this song was written and originally performed by Paul Simon. Art Garfunkel has also performed the song in concert (and recorded his own version?)...." By the way, when did Garfunkel record a version of this song? I know he sang it in concert, but did he record a studio version? That is what I meant by my comment.
Never heard Eva's version before and it's just exquisite. I'm a huge Paul Simon fan and usually don't like covers of his songs but this is a major exception. Don't quibble about the words. I'd bet money P. Simon would love Eva's cover. He's a generous performer and I wonder if they ever met. Anyone know?
@badleeroy Thank for that info - I'm glad to hear this. Paul Simon is a really generous performer - any musician working with him has always said this - and that story is one more confirmation. I'm proud to say he's an alumnus of my high school and he are Artie were legends there (he graduated 6 years before me).

It's horrible that she died young, before realizing how beloved her gift would be to so many people. And yet in some strange way I am glad that she was spared the "star making machinery". There's a certain humble straightforwardness in her singing and often overlooked guitar skills. She does tremendous vocal feats, but never for a reaction. It's pure. I'm not saying "only the good die young" or any crap like that. Just that I'm glad Eva wasn't spoilt by fame. Her motives are beyond reproach. x

I always wondered what was going on on that recording of her doing only a few of the verses of this, like, was the club owner trying to get home early that night, or what?
More likely I figure the emotion just overcame her and she just had to let it go. I've been there. What an angel!
Joner888; the first version of this was on 'The Paul Simon Songbook' which he recorded in London in 1965. He was sharing a flat with Al Stewart and Jackson C. Frank. (Paul produced Jackson's album 'The blues run the game'.

@wanturlove I'd support that. Music should always have a collaborative element, but in this day and age of competitive, ego-filled, and steroid boosted music, Eva could still out-sing and out-perform those who sing, simply because they want to be famous. She could still do this and continue to do so, from the grave, simply because her recorded work captures a rare and beautiful quality that just captivates!
@74norton850 I haven't read all the comments, but please correct your error or remove your post. You must have meant Simon, Garfunkel and Cassidy. (not Braun) which is a rather unfortunate faux pas.
Even though the recording quality has a lot of wow and flutter... there's the live feeling that still comes through. I first became aware of her when Nightline with Chris Brury sp? brought her to my attention. Then I later saw that for an "unprecedented" 2nd time Nightline rebroadcast it... and finally I saw George Stephanopoulos do the honors for a third time. If I had my way they'd do it every year. She's that deserving.
I have every one of her albums--she is a gem with one of the most beautiful voices I have ever heard. So sad to lose her so early. She was sent to us from somewhere special and they must have wanted her back.

*Aching Voices, Clear* When the winds turn, and sing In places held close and dear, softly Heard, like melting snows in New Spring Those aching voices, clear... Her song comes to us then, in pensive Quiet joy Her soul sails with us, and We go on... She goes with us She goes on... _____________________________________________ In memory of Eva Cassidy
It is so sad that so many are spending their time trying to identify wether or not she has deviated from the original words. Suffice to say this is the most perfect interpretation to my mind and it belongs to her, be grateful that we have been privilaged enough to be able to share it. Thank you Eva

Love her voice so much I googled her and couldnt believe that she has passed, I only found her the other day and now know I have truly fallen in love with an Angel, God has truly blessed me by allowing me to hear you sing. Be at peace beautiful lady.
@Stormonnormon Eva Cassidy beautiful singer, it would've been interesting to have heard her sing that song but even it had happen it would've hard for me to believe anyone could have sang it better then Jeff Buckley.
We truly lost a great gift when we lost her. Imagine what else she could have created if she had more time. I am very thankful that we have these treasured gifts of song from her to remind us.
what a voice you won't hear one like that on x-factor wannabees pure class elvis frank sinatra simon and garf did'nt have to try to sing they all could because they were born to sing god given talent did'nt have to try!
thank you Eva...I've loved you since the first time I heard you and more and more since...I know you're with God so we'll all be together again soon...rest in peace. Please keep your dermatology appointments in heaven...ok? Love.
@cesarneri3 Long ago I have seen footage of this Live at Pearls solo gig. But it has been removed from YouTube I think. Someone there filmed it for private use. I am not sure if one can obtain a DVD copy of it.
this is a nice cover, but noone can top paul's origional because soooo much emotion is poured into every word when he sings it. kathy chitty was a very lucky girl and she clearly didnt know it. what a lovely song to have written for you. if he'd written that for me in 1965 i'd hav married him nxt day!
@robbie69612 Every single song I hear from Eva makes me cry. Just knowing that her voice could make me totally relaxed. RIP you sweet angel sent to us from god. We can all look forward to hearing her sing again up in heaven. My request is to have her waiting for me to sing me somewhere over the rainbow.
@msRAT1962 Yes I know what you mean. I start to tear up even though I'm not sad. It's just the shear beauty of her voice. Very, very few artists can reach this level. I cannot think of anyone in rock, pop, folk, etc who had a more beautiful voice. Nobody.
to Joner888 Don't understand. Those are the final words that PS wrote and sang on 'Songbook, and 'Sounds of Silence' albums. But hey why quibble; we'd just be raindrops disputing the beauty of the shower!
There's only one instance in the world where anyone sings a Simon and Garfunkel song better than Simon and Garfunkel sing it themselves, and this is it. @jonno52 said it perfectly. Sublime.
All her stuff was live. Even when they put it on CD's. She never had a recording contract. After she died they put a bunch of her live and demo tapes on CD's and it sold...."Time after Time" should have it.
for ScottTennant, if you listen carefully to the words Eva sings, she does say"there before the grace of you go I". Whether she just made a mistake singing the words this way or she intentionally changed the words, I don't know and I guess we will never know because she is not here to tell us.
@Joner888 There are several changes in Eva's version. She sings, "To a land where my heart lies", instead of Simon's "To England...", and she changes diffused to confused(which actually makes more sense). I'm sure Paul wouldn't mind - he probably wishes he had thought of some of the changes.
I'm so glad we have people introducing this wonderful woman to other generations.
@Joner888 I am DEAD sure she changed just the words. She could do this anytime she wanted and make it work. Same way she could add the harmonics (those precise little high bits) just cos she wanted to do it that way.
@Joner888 She actually sing "there but for the grace of you I go" It just soo fast that it sound like before....if you listen carefully it sounds more like she's leaving out the 'u' - there b't for the grace of you I go...
@Joner888 Yea, but she also says that on the studio version, so.....? She left out/changed a few of the words to this song. & on the studio version, the line "to England where my heart lies" is not in there. Personally I like her version better than S&G's, & that says a lot because I REALLY like Simon & Garfunkel.
@frostie340: Actually the words should be "There but for the grace of you go I". It stems from an idiomatic expression in English ('There but for the grace of God go I"), meaning "I would likely have been in trouble, hadn't God been watching over me." Paul replaced "God" by "you", referring to his lover Kathy. Paul attributes to her the power to protect him from dying like the raindrops do, falling from the sky without destination or beliefs. Only Kathy can keep him from a similar aimlessness.
@Joner888 It doesn't matter--this is still ASTOUNDING! Thanks so much for posting this. It never fails to bring tears to my eyes--not from sadness, but from pure BEAUTY.
@Joner888 The change was intentional... there are several other words in the song that have been changed as well. At the time, to cover and record another artist's song, one had to change a certain number of words in the song..... : )
To say Eva's version of this song is "beautiful" is understatement. I don't quite know the exact word to describe it.
One question: On Eva's website and in the lyrics on this page, the last line of the song is rendered "there before the grace of you go I." But I believe the original S&G version is "there but for the grace of you go I," which makes sense given the popular phrase "there but for the grace of God go I." Is this just a transcription error, or did Eva really sing it that way?
@ScottTennant - I never noticed that because I was not familiar with the original lyrics but I immediately drew what may (and I underscore MAY) have been the conclusion Eva intended : that the singer is saying she is being allowed by the one she loves to walk before him in the light of his grace. I read her intent as a statement of acknowledgement and gratitude.
She was amazing...what a loss that she is gone...Great picking style and lovely interpretation on the guitar....wonderful dynamics...fine contrasting...wow. I love this.
Her guitar playing is wonderful as well! I mostly prefer to listen to Eva and just her guitar. The intimacy, strength and tenderness of hervoice and musicianship cannot be topped...
My friend sang this in front of the whole school, it was one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard! And her dad played the guitar soo harmonic..
' my thoughts are many miles away, they lie with you when you're asleep,,,, kiss you when you start the day ' . . . Say no more !

Be at peace beautiful lady.

@cesarneri3 Long ago I have seen footage of this Live at Pearls solo gig. But it has been removed from YouTube I think. Someone there filmed it for private use. I am not sure if one can obtain a DVD copy of it.

@cesarneri3 If you read the info and watch the documentary the OP uploaded, you'll see some of the footage.

this is a nice cover, but noone can top paul's origional because soooo much emotion is poured into every word when he sings it. kathy chitty was a very lucky girl and she clearly didnt know it. what a lovely song to have written for you. if he'd written that for me in 1965 i'd hav married him nxt day!

Nobody.

Eva's interpretation of this song will stand forever

Her version of Sting's Fields of Gold
and Christine McVie's Songbird
are just phenomenal
Eva was and STILL IS an artist that record companies
can NEVER change. Eva never recorded because
A. She refused and B. Because Record lables wanted
to "cage" her music and she played EVERYTHING with
such honesty and perfection "they" couldn't touch her.
Yet, Eva did, does and will ALWAYS touch every one of us.
Rest, sweet Eva... rest

Joner888 1 year ago 9
@Joner888 There are several changes in Eva's version. She sings, "To a land where my heart lies", instead of Simon's "To England...", and she changes diffused to confused(which actually makes more sense). I'm sure Paul wouldn't mind - he probably wishes he had thought of some of the changes.
I'm so glad we have people introducing this wonderful woman to other generations.
IntoTheMystical 1 year ago
@Joner888 I am DEAD sure she changed just the words. She could do this anytime she wanted and make it work. Same way she could add the harmonics (those precise little high bits) just cos she wanted to do it that way.
jdheather1 1 year ago
@jdheather1 Lyrics are the original by Paul Simon. She did not change them, but surely sings them like an angel. :)

@Joner888 There but for the grace of you go I
is the original lyrics by Paul Simon.
losttherace 1 year ago
@Joner888 She actually sing "there but for the grace of you I go" It just soo fast that it sound like before....if you listen carefully it sounds more like she's leaving out the 'u' - there b't for the grace of you I go...
kleckshexe 1 year ago
@Joner888 Yea, but she also says that on the studio version, so.....? She left out/changed a few of the words to this song. & on the studio version, the line "to England where my heart lies" is not in there. Personally I like her version better than S&G's, & that says a lot because I REALLY like Simon & Garfunkel.
gjc82071 1 year ago
@Joner888
She didn't make any mistake singing the words, these are as they were written by Paul Simon in 1965.
frostie340 1 year ago
@frostie340: Actually the words should be "There but for the grace of you go I". It stems from an idiomatic expression in English ('There but for the grace of God go I"), meaning "I would likely have been in trouble, hadn't God been watching over me." Paul replaced "God" by "you", referring to his lover Kathy. Paul attributes to her the power to protect him from dying like the raindrops do, falling from the sky without destination or beliefs. Only Kathy can keep him from a similar aimlessness.

@Joner888 Interesting............but on close scrutiny, I hear her using the correct verbage although I can see how others might hear it differently.

I listened to paul simon
he sings the lyric" there before the grace of you go I"
Thanks for posting , I would never hear this beauty without your help.
guitarsurfer2010 1 year ago

ScottTennant 1 year ago
@ScottTennant - I never noticed that because I was not familiar with the original lyrics but I immediately drew what may (and I underscore MAY) have been the conclusion Eva intended : that the singer is saying she is being allowed by the one she loves to walk before him in the light of his grace. I read her intent as a statement of acknowledgement and gratitude.
