NO!!!!! poly clay is not the medium to use. for one it is poisonous when heated well above 300 degrees. and a pipe can get that hot sometime hotter.. most like too it will catch fire.
I just turned on my first kiln to fire my first clay pipes I made. I could not find any info on clay pipe making guilds, anyone able to point me in the right direction? Thanks

Indeed it is the best to fire the clay. Outside glazing was originally done only for the "luxurious" versions. In other words: glazing is perfectly safe. It will be safe to smoke your pipe as long as it is well made. The worst that can happen is cracking
@DaltonPipes I have an old brass mold that was plowed up by my grandfather in the late 1920s...I do have some photos of it i can send . Do you have any knowledge of these old molds? Worth etc....
Why does everyone who hears 'pipe' instantly seem to assume they're all used for drugs?! These are tobacco pipes for gods sake. Brilliantly made and beautifully crafted tobacco pipes which should not be used for anything other than tobacco and display!
May you live on forever, and continue your work :)! I'm going to be making a clay pipe myself here in a bit in Art. It was awesome watching your video, now i have a great idea on how to actually make one ^^
@combatcommand What's wrong with silicates, they come from the earth and are natural too. Once fired I don't think it matters. Maybe you know something I don't?
@combatcommand Maybe we're not talking about the same kind of clay, AMACO is the brand I use. Ceramic shops fire things for a price, before I got a kiln one place charged 6 dollars apiece.
Nah, unless the upper rim of the bowl is thin, then itll just chip. Aslong as you made the pipes sorta thick all around then theyll all work fine. I gotta redo my bong's slide bowl cause its cracking at the bottom cause its too thin. But all of my pipes have never cracked or chipped. Exept the first, and i made it in my art class and it was waay to thin.
At about 1100 F clay goes through quartz inversion, depending on the type of clay (earthenware is low fire at about 1850, Stoneware is high fire at about 2300 F) the clay "matures" at these higher temps. The glaze is like glass mixed with clay... sort of. They are also formulated to flux (melt) at specific temps. Usually you fire it twice.
This must be done in a kiln, not an oven.
You can build a propane kiln at home for about $150-200. Pro kilns run $1000+
the power you invest into your own personal pipe is no laughing matter. The more you hold, and meditate with it, the more sacred it becomes. This is quite literally known and referred to as a "power object". You must never let anyone else handle this though, as it is your power invested in it and if someone were to drop it, or break it, then who knows what could happen.
Clay pipes can be cleaned by placing them in a fires hot coals. Or by placing them in a kiln as long as the heat is less then when they were originally fired.
neat. some of those pipes are gorgeous. i just bought a 16 inch tavern pipe. i wish it could have a curve to it and have a design on the bowl, but those are out of my price range. too bad i just can't get a mold and a needle and make my own.
I just bought a 6 inch clay pipe today, imported from England. It really smokes well, and only had to be lit once. This video shows an art-form which is still alive and well. EBay has quite a few clay pipes in their listings. Thanks for the video posting...

Clay pipes were excellent for smoking, since the"clay" absorbed the tabacco juices.
These pipes have NOTHING to do with drugs!!!
In the past pipe smoking contests were organized. Who could do the longest with one filling of a pipe. Big fun.

the material is baked clay/pottery. The material is very brittle, It cant be cleaned.
Some clay pipes are glazed. If they are also glazed on the inside, maybe you can clean such a pipe.
