Everything up to the pseudo history was awesome. A little historical distortion is fine (it's inevitable, in my opinion). One part of what he left out was that African tribes were selling "inferior" tribes-people to the Europeans. Certain "red-headed" Africans felt that other Africans were beneath them (like the Yoruba), and sold them. My point? No race has been truly superior to any other, unlike what Nas states: taught the Greeks and Egyptians. Not so. And Egyptians had slaves: Jews.
I am a fan of all forms of music and I will say that I found the mix to be rather well done. If all you people that are hating on this person for doing a good job of mixing two songs together want to hear something truly awful and a blasphemy to any form of music then you should run out and find a copy of Pat Boone's in a metal mood. Where you can hear someone sing crazy train in a big band sounding way.
Jesus, how come nobody gives Johnny Cash grief for covering "Hurt" from Nine Inch Nails but give this guy grief for mixing it with NAS? And before some jerk-off posts that Nine Inch Nails took it from Johnny, I want you to do your research. Johnny did a album of cover songs from bands like U2, NIN and even Depeche Mode.
@boozeroyale but johnny cash was and still is one of the greatest artists that have ever lived without him rock bands like nine inch nails would be k=no where, he was the orignial rock & roller
@tookietheclown Johnny is a legend, no doubt about that. I love his work. That said, I am one of the few that doesn't get brainwashed by his stardom. 95% of his music is awesome but his last efforts sounded like my grandfather with a guitar. Johnny Cash had absolutely no influence over NIN. NIN is more an industrial band than a rock band and Johnny doesn't exactly represent the Rock genre either. Johnny approched Trent to cover Hurt, not the other way around.
@gabrieldamicos You do know that the part that is "Johnny's" is actually Trent Reznor's from NIN? Johnny's last album was a bunch of covers from bands like U2 and even Depeche Mode. Funny thing is, most people credit Johnny for the music because it's Johnny. Johnny is a legend and I love his stuff, but I guess I'm one of the few to realize that his last years were like my grandpa singing with a guitar. Most people get too brainwashed by a legends stardom. :-(
@boozeroyale its not the originalety of the covers that makes him a genius its how he plays them he makes shitty songs amazing you cant seriously tell me that god's gonna cut you down did not send shivers down your spine the guy is a genius! he isn't know as a legend because he had a good start he is know because he plays good music when your covers are better then the originals it means your pretty fucking tight!
@ay5k8 Got to disagree with you there. Most of the covers on his last album were horrible. "Personal Jesus"? Uggg, that was awful! He didn't sound like the Johnny Cash I loved, he sounded like an old man! However, you missed my point. My point is that most people are so brainwashed they would praise Johnny Cash if he "meowed" an entire song. He's a legend and a great one but come on people, stop being lemmings.
@boozeroyale Think I'd have to agree with this to a point. So much of music tends to be "perceived value". People tend to say oh, Johnny Cash did that cover...well it's amazing then! Had the listener not known it was Johnny Cash and instead take the same song and tell them it's done by Bob Smith the local old man from the pool hall, people would listen to it for 10 seconds and go "it's an old man trying to sing Personal Jesus...next". Perceived value.
@ay5k8 yes but you say we where brainwashed by his startom he has been giving out constant hits threw out his carreer even in his cover album like gods gonna cut you down and hurt and the reason he sounds like an old man is probably because he is an old man! im not saying he is a god he didn't make his last album for any fans he doesn't give a fuck he just loves music!, i have yet to see an artist as old and beat up as johnny cash was pull out an album with HITS! in it. and his voice is heavy!
@gabrieldamicos How can you say that when nas is really speaking from the heart and giving a positive message, jump off your pedistal and enjoy some good music.
Let me ask you, how do people get these samples of johnny cash or remove the vocals & what not? it's interesting cause I stumble on a "johnny cash remix" from listening to a song & now I see all these "remixs", it's good but how the hell do you get only the instrumental & then put other vocals over it?
@BlackMarketMedia1 its called mixing, just get hold of an instrumental then most hio hop is 4 beat, but this hurt has an extra beat, he did a damn good job!
@BlackMarketMedia1 there are dif freq in songs for lyrics guitar drums so it all about isolating them.all a song is is 12 different freq on eachothers.
@nikquf Its fucking Johnny Cash. Hes not putting classic Nas over shit ass disney songs. Hes putting it with other form of music that the world would benefit from listening to more.
jarrit....damn man if you were a true johnny fan, you would know he was and still is a frontiersmen of music. he wanted everything music to be in one working harmony.
I agree with this guy and the guy above him. Think about it, if Johnny Cash took the unexpected step of covering a NIN son, then this probably something he would love. The DJ who made this just did what Cash would of done if he were still around.
