I have a buddy who really hates prog/art-rock (fellow musician) and he ONLY likes Caress of Steel,of all of Rush's works.Couldnt believe it was there worst received of all their albums..I cant either
Good stuff here. I'm a new Rush fan only having seen them from the Hold Your Fire tour, and on of course. The 'Down the Tubes" tour is reviled by the band. They don't play anything from CoS live. The only time I've ever seen it entertained was during the medeley for the 30th anniversary tour. It was a bit from Bastille Day. Too bad really. It's the album that turned me on to Rush. Oh well.
You may be interested to hear that the last time they performed any song from Caress of Steel with lyrics was on the 30th of September, 1980. A small piece of me died with that concert bootleg! :[
@DemonLobster Very interested. Ya even parsed that one to a date, nice. Sadly I was only 11 at the time. It would be 3 full years before I saw my first show, The Kinks. I still lament not hearing the fountain.
this mutha fucking song is bad as hell...i saw rush and ted nugent in detroit 1975 they did the entire cut...its was sweet too..it was like you were on a journey...rush was progressive yet hard hitting ...this album was not a critics choice but it was my choice-this album moreso put them into the direction of writing the longer themes plus the asss kicking bastille day rocked...
This goes out to: rushnut1958 Caress of Steel is a Great album!!! 2112 will always be #1 and Caress of Steel #2..and yes I LOVE the old Rush as they say: 1974-1981 Geddy Lee had one of the best vocals at the time, but he still is a rocker! Best ballad: "IN THE END" (Fly by Night) best all time song: "SOMETHING FOR NOTHING".(2112)
My first tour was ATWAS. I'd have given anything to have seen the "Down The Tubes Tour.". Call me nuts, but Caress Of Steel is my favorite album, hands down.
For a hand held Sony cassette recorder sitting 10 feet in front of the stage this sounds WONDEFUL. The balance of instruments and vocal is superb. Bless your heart for being there and capturing this!!!!!!!!
@joverboss Those are my favorite bands of all time and love them all. No need to compare them they're all so different, that's like comparing Queen and Queensryche just because they both have Queen in their name
@joverboss Very well said.,, I like you love all those bands..Find it futile to argue over who's better..The fact is they are all great and different bands..That is why they are not able to be compartmentalized??I just try to ingnore the trolls..I come to utube to listen to music and share my love of it with others..Godbles and peaceout..Hope you and your family have a safe happy Xmas........

You are all better off listening to Relayer by Yes (which heavily influenced Caress of Steel). You can then come to your own conclusions regards who is prog as fuck and who is just reacting to their own self imposed three piece rocktastic simplifying ideal of what prog rock can REALLY do. Check out The Gates of Delirium by Yes then listen to anything from this awesome Rush album, it`s like comparing Bach to Bachman Turner Overdrive. Don`t get me wrong, Rush are awesome, but crap compared to Yes
@Johnnywr Yes can play, but their songs don't have "flow." I mean, John Anderson's lyrics don't match the "beat" per say, I don't know how to explain it. It just sounds like and equivalent of jazz noodling. Don't get me wrong, I respect Yes. I love Siberian Khatru, Awaken, Starship Trooper, but a lot of their mid-1970 ultra-prog stuff (Tales from Topographic Oceans, etc.) Go on for too long and aren't what I call listenable. Sure, Yes is prog as fuck, I don't think Rush was trying to be.
@Jalreal the difference being, Yes were a progressive band (prog-rock is too simplistic, but will have to do) and Rush were (in the 70s) a rock band with prog tendencies. I really don`t think Yes songs lack flow, I think flow is subjective. Songs like And you and I simply have no Rush equivalent. Yours is no disgrace is a great example of Yes creating the classic 9 minute 3 minute pop song. I will always love Rush as their music introduced me to the more complex and exhilirating music of Yes.
@hat6036 Yeah, Rush are indeed, an awesome band, one of the very best. Don`t let my love of Yes get in the way of my admiration of Rush. In fact, not too long ago I bought some of the Rush remasters CDs. Good to hear that early stuff again. I didn`t bother with anything after Moving Pictures though. Also bought the Beyond the lighted stage DVD. Good stuff.
@LinamQB6 You`re right. Rush is the most musically talented band ever. Of course, what was I thinking? Now that we`ve cleared that up, go listen to The Gates of Delirium by Yes and shut the fuck up.
By the way, you seriously need to expand your music collection dude. I think you are suffering from the "Rush blindness"
@VirtualDynamite I do like what you like. Caress of Steel is my favourite Rush album and the Necromancer is my favourite track from the album. I think Rush are amazing (well, were amazing, 1974 -81 is the golden age). It`s just that YES are (or were) more interesting, that`s all. See, now I have shut the fucked up.
@VirtualDynamite King Crimson were indeed a very interesting band. Their album third album Lizard is THE album to play to stoned friends to wake them out of their stoned stupors, although I prefer Starless and Bible Black (with Bruford) and In the Wake of Poseidon (mellotron madness). Key thing is though, you said Bruford left Yes to jam with King Crimson. Yes, like Rush, were more song orientated. In a prog sense, it`s kinda like KC = The Rolling Stones, Yes = The Beatles.
@Johnnywr don't forget 'larks tongues in aspic' bruford didn't leave to 'jam' w/ Fripp he was getting paid big to do it, and the resulting stuff gave us all a lot of good music!
Rush get categorized in "North American Rock & Roll" in my library, but very close to "Brit Prog" as it's obvious getting Pratt freed them up to become what they are...
This is the stuff that I wish they would do live again. Caress of Steel, A Farewell Kings, were very deep albums. Very surreal. Some say over the top, I say in depth with a warm mystical analog sound.
@myway43 I'd love to hear it again too (Xanadu is my fucking JAM), but Geddy's voice just can't reach those notes anymore. In fact, he said that they actually tried rehearsing AFTK for this last tour and he found it impossible to sing it correctly.
@myway43 I think i could say that Caress of Steel was one of my favorites, if not my favorite album by rush. I dont know why, but it is a perfect mix of prog, rock, and emotion in one album
We should all be thankful that this album was a flop. If it was a success, 2112 would not exist. The whole concept of 2112 was to prove to themselves that they could bounce back and to say a big FU to the studio, who tried to tell them to be more like Bad Company. That's why the album was so loud and angry, too.
@fizbin321 acctually it wasn't an attempt to bounce back, it was more of idea to go out with a bang, but it just happened to be a break through album out of chance
@fizbin321 Actually from the sources I've encountered, they decided to do 2112 inspite of the want for shorter more comercial songs. Therefore, they would have done it either way, your point is null and void.
Man, does Geddy sound wiceked (5:22) He really knows to give the song the right expression. And Lerxst is really tearing itu up (6;00)... so great to hear this live
Nevermind young type people who were too young to witness Rush in 1975, there`s always Presto to deem the best thing since The Beatles? Remember, Rush don`t do crap albums.
Damn I would give anything to go back in time and experience Rush live in 74-81. I would be high the entire time with everyone else I would also be driving around in a 69 Mustang Boss 302
@pinkfloydrule27 Didn't they perform the Fountain of Lamneth on like the first two dates of the Caress of Steel but then dropped it due to the audience's apparent lack of interest/enthusiasm? Even if this is true, I doubt there would be any audio of those 2 shows.
@pinkfloydrule27 I can't remember exactly where I read it. It was several years ago and I believe it was some interview about the old days where Alex mentions the CoS tour and how it started out. I'll do some digging and if I can find out exactly where it came from, i'll let you know.
Apologies for being a year late in responding; but Rush *did* in fact play Lamneth live, on the LAST date of the CoS tour (Jan 10th, 1976) when they were unexpectedly forced to headline a show ahead of Kiss.
Allegedly a soundboard recording of the aforementioned performance lies in the possession of a cousin of Geddy's named Lindy; however, no source I've seen can confirm whether this SBD exists, or ever whether Geddy has a cousin Lindy!
@skorziks I seem to remember them playing Fountain of Lamneth on the Caress Of Steel tour, unfortunately, I was a very young RoQer and had no idea about bootlegging - or - the funds to purchase any recording equipment. I saw every tour From Fly By Night upto Hemispheres but actually missed 2112 yet ended up seeing a couple of random shows after that as Rush just didn't seem to RoQ hard enough anymore.
Sadly, this is probably the most under-appreciated piece of music there is. Too bad a true lyrical and musical masterpiece such as this has to slip under the radar. :'(
The gods of rock blessed us with your vigilance to have snuck in that cassette recorder cause what you have is the rarest and only copy of a live Necromancer Ive ever heard. This is my favorite song and to have this version means so much to me. God bless you for going and capturing this jewel, you have one of the holy grails of classic rock. Hats off to you my brother. Mark (sacramento)
It couldn't be good quality. I recorded it with a hand held Sony cassette recorder sitting 10 feet in front of the stage. I didn't realize when I released it back in 2000 it was the only bootleg of full version of the song.
I saw them do this live @ The Aragon Brawl Room in Chicago 1975. My all time favorite Rush song from Caress of Steel. I saw them last week in Mountainview, CA for the 15th time. Although they didn't play anything from Fly By Night or Caress, this is still my favorite period of the band. They were hungry, ambitious, and played their asses off! They still sound great, but I will always remember them @ The Aragon, backing up bands like UFO, Foghat, Aerosmith & Kiss!
@mtzimm ...Rush did not open for UFO, it was the other way around. I saw UFO open for Rush in early 78 at the Ampitheater and they were unbelievable with Schenker. UFO became headliners in Chicago later in the year with Judas priest as opener - I still have my ticket stub! This show was recorded for Strangers in the Night. Love this era of music!
I love this album & Rush so much, it hurts. P.S. I think it's funny how the guy at the beginning yells "NE-cro-man-CERRR!" at the beginning, right after Geddy's intro.
Not bad sound for an audience recording from that time. Some parts of this song Lifeson's guitar sounds like Jimmy Page's instrumental solos during Led Zeps 1977 tour. (particularly around the 4:20 mark, no joke) Or wait maybe Page sounds like Lifeson? :) Pretty cool stuff.
they didn't call it the 'down the tubes tour' for nothing... album didn't sell well, they lost money this tour (at one point were unable to pay the crew) and the next studio LP was 2112, which sort of began the next 'era' of Rush.
RUSH playing at the old Rockford Armory on N.Main St. If memory serves me correctly they opened for Kiss. Cost of a ticket..$5,lol,man those were the days
Just to say that I don't know what their best period was but it was exciting to be a first hand observer to their progress from being a club band, to opening for major acts, to being a major act. They worked hard for their success and toured relentlessly and evolved. It was great to see.
@indi626 Hey! I'm a Rusha fan from way long ago. I found a bootleg DVD with two shows NJ and NY from 1976. Some dude at an 'old fart" record convention had a booth. $10 for the DVD and $3 cover. Video poor but sound ok....'though its just a memory,...some memories last forever" this helps the forever thing!
I don't get all the arguments about Rush and there change in sound over the years. The band couldn't just continue to play 70's sounding rock and roll. I used to like albums like 2112, Hemispheres, A Farewell to Kings, etc. more than the 80's stuff but as I listened to it more and understood it I grew to like it just as much and now Grace Under Pressure is one of my top favorite Rush albums.
@4fitter27 I would argue their musical writing and playing peak was Waves/Moving Pictures. The gear sounded the best and their chops combined with the harder material, made them, in my opinion, at their peak. Watch/listen to Exit Stage Left and then watch any other period, and you'll see they have the best sound at that time.
@negtype13...I didn`t say Rush music post 1982 was garbage, I tried to say it`s weak compared to their 1975-81 output (and in a way you agree). I agree with you about Yes`s post 1977 output (although 90125 was a more drastic change from 70`s Yes than any leap Rush have made). I wouldn`t say Rush are a more `true` progressive rock band than Yes simply down to Rush`s ability to maintain album sales. If Signals was Rush`s debut album would you still be here defending them? I doubt it?
@Johnnywr I would sure defend them if Signals was! It has fantastic songs. Digital Man, Subdivisions, Losing It, etc. The whole album is great. I don't want to get into an argument I just think that it's a great album and in some respects more interesting than Moving Pictures.
@EvianBaby Signals was the last Rush album I bought back in December 1982. I thought it was great at the time but Signals WA the last genuinely interesting album by Rush, Grace under pressure was a more 80`s developed version of Signals and the rest of the 80`s was just Rush reacting to the music around them rather than Rush experimenting and doing exactly as they pleased in the manner they had in that classic 75-81 period. Yes, 75-81 is the classic Rush period.
@Johnnywr That is a good observation that they were reacting to the music around them but I think that's why I love them so much. If they didn't experiment so much they would be a little less interesting. Really it's hard to say either way but that's why I keep coming back to them because of their diverse catalog. I do agree that 75-81 is the classic Rush period though.
I`m a YES fan but I started with RUSH and will always have a soft spot for them. All I can add to the "which period matters most" issue is...would you rather have their 1975-81 period disappear and not be known or would you rather Rush only be known for their 1982 -present day music?
In my opinion if you subtract the 1975-81 period you are left with a very, very boring run of the mill (good musicians/can`t write a song to save themselves) cheesy band. My vote goes out to Rush 1975-81.
First off...You need to turn that question around on your boys in YES. They would fit that "boring run of the mill" theme WAY more than Rush ever could/will. Agreed74-81 was more exciting and more my style/taste but to say everything after is garbage is just plain ignorance. They stretched out, changed with times and tried different styles, chemistry, and formulas. Some worked, some didn't; but they ALWAYS had the balls to try. And Never let themselves be typecast. That's TRUE progressive rock.
I have only one thing to say about all of this I've posted before that TRUE RUSH FANS wouldnt debate like this. Its very simple... They have been around so long and have changed along with time, thats what happens Hello...and theve always been awsome!! Are you all TRUE FANS is what you need to DEBATE with yourself when those of you that need to, hopefully you have the time to that .
I'm tired of this bullshit. None of you are Rush fans. There is no Rush "period". They are the same band they have always been and always will be. I'm confident that none of you have heard their new cd's or bought their DVDs. Before you can call yourselves any kind of "fan", you owe it to this band to give them a chance. Read the writings of Neil Peart, watch new interviews. Get your fucking head out of the past and listen to the goddamn beauty.
infact there are rush periods to say they havnt changed since 1974 is denial and for your knowledge snakes and arrows is one of my favourite rush albums so before you judge someone and accuse them of not being a real fan for preferring them in 1975 is a vast misjudgement
I didn't mean that they haven't changed. You said that THE Rush period was 1978-1981, implying that this is them at their best and they will never equal it. Which is strange since you posted this video of a song from before that and claim that you like Snakes and Arrows so much. But anyway, what I'm saying is that there is no quintessential Rush period. They are always at the top of their game and innovating. I gues you aren't a fan that think Rush sucks now, but that is basically what you said.
i stand by the comment that 78-81 is THE rush period and yes they have inproved as musicians but im saying that the time that there performance was the greatest sounding was that time its like any band that has survived over the 30 years they will always be improving as musicians but there is always a period for any band that they have been at there absolute prime setlist and performance wise and that for rush was 78-81
they have always been top musicians and always will be yes and you seem to think that i hate rush apart from those 3 years well that is incorrect i am saying they were at the top of there game at that time and there are things they did then that they cant do now, why do you think they do 2112 a tone lower nowadays, so that geddy can sing it because his voice isnt as powerful and high as it was 30 years ago
Well if you think they will never be as good as they were in 1978-1981 only because Geddy can't sing as high now, then I guess it's not worth arguing about.
AMEN bro!! They came back on fire with Snakes. I remember bringing the CD to work to listen to it for the first time. I'm a TIG welder so I just put the ear phones in and go! They hit on SO many styles, textures, dynamics,etc... ( I mean 3 instrumentals!?!..it was just POURING out of them!) I was overwhelmed and replayed it ALL day long! Over 8 straight hours! \m/ \m/ \m/
Stinks that there is not a good quality version of this live. This is probably my most favorite Rush song and they never play it live. Hopefully next time they record an album they will play it on tour. Although I highly doubt it.
Yeah, Caress is probably my favorite as well. Although, I like most of all their albums, to me, Necromancer, and Lamneth seem to stand out more than some of the other albums. Next on my list would probably be Farewell to Kings.
its been my Experience that most Rush fans are clueless and really dont understand what makes this band so unique and Rare.
When i ask the Avg. Rush fan if they can hear a difference between the Radio formatted strict pop format of say Tom Sawyer as contrasted with the unconventional extremely Creative experimental stuff like this song here, or By tor or Xanadu
they simply sit there and say ' Not really it all sounds good to me
The songs Rush made Pre Moving Pictures had a Creativity and Rare Style and sound that was only once, Never to be ducplicated
When someone says they Like Rush, thats way too broad and lacks any real meaning. As Obviously The Rush of after 1984 was a RADICALLY different band than 70s Rush.
its like 2 totally different groups and musical sounds and song structures. So for someone to say they are a Fan means NOTHING unless they get specific on what ERA they like
Especially since I'm being discriminated for my music tastes, come on. I now have the nickname Tom Sawyer at school, it's not a bad nickname, but just seems weird that nobody listens to Rush or has barely even heard of them. You know I probably wouldn't like them if everyone did though I guess.
moving pictures is a great album but you cant beat that more progressive instrumentally baffling period of 75-78 i wasnt the biggest fan of a farewell to kings i love side 1 and cygnus x-1 but cinderella man and madrigal let it down for me but i think cinderella man is the only song from the 70s i fundamentally dont like
there is only one bootleg from the COS tour but there are 2 or 3 masters of it, unfortunately this is one of the worst quality masters but its something and it was an amazing tour
The sound quality of this tune is not bad at all ! no its not ' ideal' but its certainly good enough where we can hear the essence of the performance quite well
thanks for uploading this and i honestly have heard boots ALOT worse than this. i think this one actually isnt that bad
how do you get all these awsome bootlegs man? i's like to hear some! mostly the Rush bootlegs cuz i have alot of the Floyd ones! RIP Rick Wright... and long live Rush btw!
one of the greatest overall songs...curious its not played more by Rush over the last 20 years... I think this song is a snapshot of what Rush's music is as a whole... slow .. fast... drums... bass... medleys and serious solo's by Lifeson... great !!!!! need to see more of the Necromancer... I have about 50% of this song figured out... wish some of the Rush fans would post a lesson.... thnks!!
i agree, its a wonder that they rarely if ever decided to play this on Any of their tours past and present.
Kinda Reminds me of Jacobs ladder, they rarely play that great tune also, but this one is SUPER rare
to be honest i will bet you its because Most Fans just arent into it. Most Rush fans are Tom Sawyer Morons, they only like the ' pop' stuff rush put out where it fits the standard Song format and structure,
yeah man.. I know what you mean... I hear some people that have just gotten into Rush over the last 10 years or so when they talk about how great the Rush concerts are.. It kinda cracks me up you know... I have seen the real Rush in the late 70's and early 80;s when they really put on a SMASHING show compared to some of the junk they play now... none of them will ever know what I mean unless you are a true old school fan... its like seeing the Doors in 1967 or 1971 when Morrison was burnt out!
Yes, I have gotten into Rush in the last ten years. lol But I haven't seen them in concert, but just watching them doing old concerts from the 70's makes me wish I could have seen them back in their prime, don't get me wrong I'd still like to see them now, but I know it's just not the same.
Most Rush Fans have no Appreciation or Understanding of just how this song captures the pure Power, creativity and essence of Rush.
To them this song is no different than say Big Money. After all as they say ' rush is rush'
i say, NOTHING could be further from the Truth, when i hear someone say that i realize im speaking with someone that in reality, doesnt understand this band and has NO musical discernment , ie a ' Musical Moron '
I know, I love both styles completely, but I'm in deep love with the stuff pre moving pictures and even the masterpiece The Camera Eye, another song that's impossible to find live. Xanadu is probably one of my favorite songs of all time. The first time I heard it, I literally put it on repeat and listened to it all day, and I never do that, ever, for any song.
Although for me, it seems that I can find anyone who really likes Rush. No one at my school likes Rush at all, it seems wieird to me
yea i hear ya, the music Rush puts out now is ok, but its NOTHING compared to songs like this.
I had a friend who saw Rush many times in concert back in the late 80s, and he claimed to be the biggest fan around, yet in convos with him, he didnt understand the difference between songs like Red Barchetta and out of the box creative masterpieces like Xanadu
He claimed it was all the same and it was all good stuff. I realized i was talking to a Moron
Im not saying they cant kick ass still you TOOL!!!!... all I am saying that their music has watered down since Grace Under Pressure/Presto era...ever since its been a buch of experimental crap that has no weight compared to RUSH, Fly by Night, Caress of Steel, 2112, Hemispheres, Moving Pictures, Siganls, Grace Under Pressure, some of Presto...etc etc..and therefore, their live shows now as compared to before, are not as musically rocking.... any Rush fan knows that old Rush is real Rush....
Are you kidding me?! They have never watered down their music. They may have had some bad recording experiences, but Rush always prevails. Each song has as much story, heart, and feeling as the last. They are RUSH; they don't get tired, burnt out, or run out of ideas. I think you need to actually LISTEN to their newer albums and you might be surprised. That goes for all the idiot Rush fans of the world that think early Rush is just so much better. I've got news for you! RUSH IS STILL RUSH!
lol...dude chill out man!! I play the guitar and believe me, older Rush, like the first 7 or so are masterpieces... the later stuff is like elevator music.. do you ever hear new Rush on the radio?.. NO!! because it sucks... now realize that I am not discounting the genious musicianship of Lee, Lifeson and Piert, but the later stuff cant hold the older stuffs bag .....
The reason newer stuff is not on the radio is because Rush is not commercial.
In fact you are discounting their musicianship. Yes, they have evolved and changed through the years and their musicianship has only gotten better. You discount them because you just said their music sucks. Like I said you need to actually listen to this stuff. Saying its like elevator music is completely ridiculous. The new music is just as complex. I can't fathom how a so called "true" Rush fan can say these things
Malc..everyone see;s pussy and you see penis... sorry mate... you are dillusional...I love Rush.... and have loved Rush b4 u were born... keep loving Rush mate... later for ever.....
i agree about jacobs ladder, what an amzing song and they just played it on the permenent waves and moving pictures warm up tours, but theyve gone through permenent waves the last few tours bringing back natural science and entre nous so who knows maybe jacobs ladder is the next to get pulled out of the vault
no sorry as far as i know they are still yet to bring it back but i do have a very interesting performance of it from the pre-moving pictures tour when they do a very strange intro jam, with geddy doing one of his hilarious rants over the top!!!
sucks that geddy wasted his voice on a tour that no one cared about...

Johnnywr 11 months ago
Jalreal 10 months ago
@Jalreal the difference being, Yes were a progressive band (prog-rock is too simplistic, but will have to do) and Rush were (in the 70s) a rock band with prog tendencies. I really don`t think Yes songs lack flow, I think flow is subjective. Songs like And you and I simply have no Rush equivalent. Yours is no disgrace is a great example of Yes creating the classic 9 minute 3 minute pop song. I will always love Rush as their music introduced me to the more complex and exhilirating music of Yes.
Johnnywr 10 months ago
@Johnnywr Yes is a great band but you have to admit that Rush is a very talented band. Their music is in no way simplistic at all
hat6036 2 months ago

Johnnywr 9 months ago
@Johnnywr King Crimson where a lot more interesting than Yes, I think thats why Bruford left Yes to jam with King Crimson.
VirtualDynamite 9 months ago
@VirtualDynamite King Crimson were indeed a very interesting band. Their album third album Lizard is THE album to play to stoned friends to wake them out of their stoned stupors, although I prefer Starless and Bible Black (with Bruford) and In the Wake of Poseidon (mellotron madness). Key thing is though, you said Bruford left Yes to jam with King Crimson. Yes, like Rush, were more song orientated. In a prog sense, it`s kinda like KC = The Rolling Stones, Yes = The Beatles.
Johnnywr 9 months ago
@Johnnywr don't forget 'larks tongues in aspic' bruford didn't leave to 'jam' w/ Fripp he was getting paid big to do it, and the resulting stuff gave us all a lot of good music!
Rush get categorized in "North American Rock & Roll" in my library, but very close to "Brit Prog" as it's obvious getting Pratt freed them up to become what they are...
daddysevenpointfiver 7 months ago
This is the stuff that I wish they would do live again. Caress of Steel, A Farewell Kings, were very deep albums. Very surreal. Some say over the top, I say in depth with a warm mystical analog sound.
myway43 1 year ago 15
@myway43 I'd love to hear it again too (Xanadu is my fucking JAM), but Geddy's voice just can't reach those notes anymore. In fact, he said that they actually tried rehearsing AFTK for this last tour and he found it impossible to sing it correctly.
This is why we need time machines.
rockisheaven 6 months ago
@myway43 I think i could say that Caress of Steel was one of my favorites, if not my favorite album by rush. I dont know why, but it is a perfect mix of prog, rock, and emotion in one album

We should all be thankful that this album was a flop. If it was a success, 2112 would not exist. The whole concept of 2112 was to prove to themselves that they could bounce back and to say a big FU to the studio, who tried to tell them to be more like Bad Company. That's why the album was so loud and angry, too.
fizbin321 1 year ago
@fizbin321 acctually it wasn't an attempt to bounce back, it was more of idea to go out with a bang, but it just happened to be a break through album out of chance
belial1237 1 year ago
@fizbin321 Actually from the sources I've encountered, they decided to do 2112 inspite of the want for shorter more comercial songs. Therefore, they would have done it either way, your point is null and void.

@pinkfloydrule27 Didn't they perform the Fountain of Lamneth on like the first two dates of the Caress of Steel but then dropped it due to the audience's apparent lack of interest/enthusiasm? Even if this is true, I doubt there would be any audio of those 2 shows.
skorziks 1 year ago
@skorziks ive never heard this before where did you read it if it is true thats amazing
pinkfloydrule27 1 year ago
@pinkfloydrule27 I can't remember exactly where I read it. It was several years ago and I believe it was some interview about the old days where Alex mentions the CoS tour and how it started out. I'll do some digging and if I can find out exactly where it came from, i'll let you know.
skorziks 1 year ago
@pinkfloydrule27
We can only hope, eh?
DemonLobster 1 month ago
@skorziks I seem to remember them playing Fountain of Lamneth on the Caress Of Steel tour, unfortunately, I was a very young RoQer and had no idea about bootlegging - or - the funds to purchase any recording equipment. I saw every tour From Fly By Night upto Hemispheres but actually missed 2112 yet ended up seeing a couple of random shows after that as Rush just didn't seem to RoQ hard enough anymore.

They still sound great, but I will always remember them @ The Aragon, backing up bands like UFO, Foghat, Aerosmith & Kiss!
mtzimm 1 year ago
@mtzimm ...Rush did not open for UFO, it was the other way around. I saw UFO open for Rush in early 78 at the Ampitheater and they were unbelievable with Schenker. UFO became headliners in Chicago later in the year with Judas priest as opener - I still have my ticket stub! This show was recorded for Strangers in the Night. Love this era of music!

@roger42homunculus probably because of how unseccesful caress of steel was they dropped the least accesible songs after the tour

they didn't call it the 'down the tubes tour' for nothing... album didn't sell well, they lost money this tour (at one point were unable to pay the crew) and the next studio LP was 2112, which sort of began the next 'era' of Rush.

Just to say that I don't know what their best period was but it was exciting to be a first hand observer to their progress from being a club band, to opening for major acts, to being a major act. They worked hard for their success and toured relentlessly and evolved. It was great to see.

Watch the promo video for "LA Villa Strangiato" and tell me that they weren't at their musical peak at that point (that was filmed in '78).
4fitter27 2 years ago

I doubt it?
Johnnywr 2 years ago
@Johnnywr I would sure defend them if Signals was! It has fantastic songs. Digital Man, Subdivisions, Losing It, etc. The whole album is great. I don't want to get into an argument I just think that it's a great album and in some respects more interesting than Moving Pictures.
EvianBaby 11 months ago
@EvianBaby Signals was the last Rush album I bought back in December 1982. I thought it was great at the time but Signals WA the last genuinely interesting album by Rush, Grace under pressure was a more 80`s developed version of Signals and the rest of the 80`s was just Rush reacting to the music around them rather than Rush experimenting and doing exactly as they pleased in the manner they had in that classic 75-81 period. Yes, 75-81 is the classic Rush period.
Johnnywr 11 months ago
@Johnnywr That is a good observation that they were reacting to the music around them but I think that's why I love them so much. If they didn't experiment so much they would be a little less interesting. Really it's hard to say either way but that's why I keep coming back to them because of their diverse catalog. I do agree that 75-81 is the classic Rush period though.
EvianBaby 11 months ago
I`m a YES fan but I started with RUSH and will always have a soft spot for them. All I can add to the "which period matters most" issue is...would you rather have their 1975-81 period disappear and not be known or would you rather Rush only be known for their 1982 -present day music?
In my opinion if you subtract the 1975-81 period you are left with a very, very boring run of the mill (good musicians/can`t write a song to save themselves) cheesy band. My vote goes out to Rush 1975-81.
Johnnywr 2 years ago
First off...You need to turn that question around on your boys in YES. They would fit that "boring run of the mill" theme WAY more than Rush ever could/will. Agreed74-81 was more exciting and more my style/taste but to say everything after is garbage is just plain ignorance. They stretched out, changed with times and tried different styles, chemistry, and formulas. Some worked, some didn't; but they ALWAYS had the balls to try. And Never let themselves be typecast. That's TRUE progressive rock.
negtype13 2 years ago
I have only one thing to say about all of this I've posted before that TRUE RUSH FANS wouldnt debate like this. Its very simple... They have been around so long and have changed along with time, thats what happens Hello...and theve always been awsome!! ontherush77 2 years ago
Get your fucking head out of the past and listen to the goddamn beauty.
malcolmX213 2 years ago
infact there are rush periods to say they havnt changed since 1974 is denial and for your knowledge snakes and arrows is one of my favourite rush albums so before you judge someone and accuse them of not being a real fan for preferring them in 1975 is a vast misjudgement
pinkfloydrule27 2 years ago
I didn't mean that they haven't changed. You said that THE Rush period was 1978-1981, implying that this is them at their best and they will never equal it. Which is strange since you posted this video of a song from before that and claim that you like Snakes and Arrows so much. But anyway, what I'm saying is that there is no quintessential Rush period. They are always at the top of their game and innovating. I gues you aren't a fan that think Rush sucks now, but that is basically what you said.
malcolmX213 2 years ago
i stand by the comment that 78-81 is THE rush period and yes they have inproved as musicians but im saying that the time that there performance was the greatest sounding was that time its like any band that has survived over the 30 years they will always be improving as musicians but there is always a period for any band that they have been at there absolute prime setlist and performance wise and that for rush was 78-81
pinkfloydrule27 2 years ago
I don't usually say this, but that is strictly your opinion. Like I said they are ALWAYS at the top of their game playing great, new songs.
malcolmX213 2 years ago
they have always been top musicians and always will be yes and you seem to think that i hate rush apart from those 3 years well that is incorrect i am saying they were at the top of there game at that time and there are things they did then that they cant do now, why do you think they do 2112 a tone lower nowadays, so that geddy can sing it because his voice isnt as powerful and high as it was 30 years ago
pinkfloydrule27 2 years ago
Well if you think they will never be as good as they were in 1978-1981 only because Geddy can't sing as high now, then I guess it's not worth arguing about.
malcolmX213 2 years ago
AMEN bro!! They came back on fire with Snakes. I remember bringing the CD to work to listen to it for the first time. I'm a TIG welder so I just put the ear phones in and go! Caress of Steel is actually one of my Favorite Albums, although amongst RUSH fans its prob last on their list.
You are correct, this is the ONLY version ive ever heard of this Live. ULTRA RARE
ACEBAKER911 2 years ago
Yeah, Caress is probably my favorite as well. Although, I like most of all their albums, to me, Necromancer, and Lamneth seem to stand out more than some of the other albums. Next on my list would probably be Farewell to Kings.
JTrials31 2 years ago
its been my Experience that most Rush fans are clueless and really dont understand what makes this band so unique and Rare.
When i ask the Avg. Rush fan if they can hear a difference between the Radio formatted strict pop format of say Tom Sawyer as contrasted with the unconventional extremely Creative experimental stuff like this song here, or By tor or Xanadu
they simply sit there and say ' Not really it all sounds good to me
Than i know they dont get it
ACEBAKER911 2 years ago
Yes, i know what ya mean. I mean I like mostly all of it, but there is just that special feel to the early days that you just can't beat.
JTrials31 2 years ago
The songs Rush made Pre Moving Pictures had a Creativity and Rare Style and sound that was only once, Never to be ducplicated
When someone says they Like Rush, thats way too broad and lacks any real meaning. As Obviously The Rush of after 1984 was a RADICALLY different band than 70s Rush.
its like 2 totally different groups and musical sounds and song structures. So for someone to say they are a Fan means NOTHING unless they get specific on what ERA they like
ACEBAKER911 2 years ago
Especially since I'm being discriminated for my music tastes, come on. I now have the nickname Tom Sawyer at school, it's not a bad nickname, but just seems weird that nobody listens to Rush or has barely even heard of them. You know I probably wouldn't like them if everyone did though I guess.
JTrials31 2 years ago
moving pictures is a great album but you cant beat that more progressive instrumentally baffling period of 75-78 i wasnt the biggest fan of a farewell to kings i love side 1 and cygnus x-1 but cinderella man and madrigal let it down for me but i think cinderella man is the only song from the 70s i fundamentally dont like

one of the greatest overall songs...curious its not played more by Rush over the last 20 years... i agree, its a wonder that they rarely if ever decided to play this on Any of their tours past and present.
Kinda Reminds me of Jacobs ladder, they rarely play that great tune also, but this one is SUPER rare
to be honest i will bet you its because Most Fans just arent into it. Most Rush fans are Tom Sawyer Morons, they only like the ' pop' stuff rush put out where it fits the standard Song format and structure,
This tune is WAY out there, but amazing
ACEBAKER911 2 years ago
yeah man.. I know what you mean... I hear some people that have just gotten into Rush over the last 10 years or so when they talk about how great the Rush concerts are.. It kinda cracks me up you know... I have seen the real Rush in the late 70's and early 80;s when they really put on a SMASHING show compared to some of the junk they play now... none of them will ever know what I mean unless you are a true old school fan... its like seeing the Doors in 1967 or 1971 when Morrison was burnt out!
sillentdragon 2 years ago
Yes, I have gotten into Rush in the last ten years. lol But I haven't seen them in concert, but just watching them doing old concerts from the 70's makes me wish I could have seen them back in their prime, don't get me wrong I'd still like to see them now, but I know it's just not the same.
JTrials31 2 years ago
Most Rush Fans have no Appreciation or Understanding of just how this song captures the pure Power, creativity and essence of Rush.
To them this song is no different than say Big Money. After all as they say ' rush is rush'
i say, NOTHING could be further from the Truth, when i hear someone say that i realize im speaking with someone that in reality, doesnt understand this band and has NO musical discernment , ie a ' Musical Moron '
ACEBAKER911 2 years ago

WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT!?
Rush can still kick ass live you stupid ass.
malcolmX213 2 years ago

NO!! because it sucks... now realize that I am not discounting the genious musicianship of Lee, Lifeson and Piert, but the later stuff cant hold the older stuffs bag .....
sillentdragon 2 years ago
The reason newer stuff is not on the radio is because Rush is not commercial.
In fact you are discounting their musicianship. Yes, they have evolved and changed through the years and their musicianship has only gotten better. You discount them because you just said their music sucks. Like I said you need to actually listen to this stuff. Saying its like elevator music is completely ridiculous. The new music is just as complex. I can't fathom how a so called "true" Rush fan can say these things

i agree totally, those concerts were the best ever and the LIve sound they had then was nothing short of pure classic vintage brilliance

i agree about jacobs ladder, what an amzing song and they just played it on the permenent waves and moving pictures warm up tours, but theyve gone through permenent waves the last few tours bringing back natural science and entre nous so who knows maybe jacobs ladder is the next to get pulled out of the vault

no sorry as far as i know they are still yet to bring it back but i do have a very interesting performance of it from the pre-moving pictures tour when they do a very strange intro jam, with geddy doing one of his hilarious rants over the top!!!
