The fact that you said that proves that you are simply a steam-roller style player, who only likes games where you can sit in your base until you have too many units for it to be possible to defend against, and as such, you aren't a RTS player, you're just a guy who's brain doesn't work well enough to know what to do when you can't steamroll. Population caps force you to use your forces properly.
Consider this, Warcraft 3 had a pretty low pop cap, armies consisted of only about 60-75 units at MOST, and yet, its supposed to be a war, so your saying attacks on capital cities would only have 60-75 people out of thousands defending?(i'm using warcraft 3 as an example it is a great game but i'm just trying to make a point)
Yeah, but SWAT 4 perfectly ties in genuine realism and fun, the expansion does anyway.
Men of War is still *pretty* arcade, sure, management of infantry is incredibly detailed, but realistic goes to Theater of War or Achtung Panzer Kharkov 1943, as they have much more detailed penetration tables and basically equally as detailed infantry management.
@LiamNeesonsDick the add on for men of war(not the red tide i talking about the assault squad one)adds 2 stuffs for damage againt armor:hull penetration and crew injured(IDK what hull penetration does in special but the crew injured stuff obvialy injure the tank crew and sometimes kill part of it)
I consider units in that situation (the scaling is all out of whack) to be representative of a force of those units. In my mind, one footman stands for a troop of footmen, only represented as one for simplicity's sake.
And besides, it's a game about a medeival war between humans (,elves, dwarfs), orcs (trolls, ogres, tauren) and the undead. I don't think realism has anything to do with it.

There's no population cap. Red Alert never uses a population cap. That's what makes it superior to most other RTS games.

And it's not superior, it's just more popular.

Realistic... fun... realistic... fun...
Yeah you can take your realistic games, I'll stick with fun games.

Why not mix the two, CoH for example ties in both realism and fun.

Company of Heroes.
And that was a shitty example because CoH is arcady as fuck and all fun, a better example would have been SWAT 4 now that I think about it.
