  • I've just searched for the vessel near Gopnath using Google Earth and cannot find it, so I must assume that it was eventually moved to Alang and scrapped. Anyone have an update to the contrary?

  • @ranmacman she ran aground and her hull cracked, now she lays in 2 pieces , half submerged in front of the alang beaches

  • if only charly limburg never flew over the atlantic many great ocean lines never would have closed down or become cruse lines becaus they think travel by sea is to slow when united states lines had the fastest ship in the world the ss united states who stil holds the recard for the fastest crosing when she was going a litil over half speep but stil 60 yrs ago ther wer hundreds of ocean liners crosing the atlantic now just one the qm2 but peopl always dreamed of air travle but whats don is don :(

  • all the 1900's ships are disapearing the norway, independance, american star, etc

  • @Brendon00000 no it's the SS FRANCE, SS INDEPENDANCE, AND SS AMERICA,etc

  • I remember in 1996 (when I was 1, yes I actually remember)

This ship was in Hawaii during the July 4th and they were shooting fireworks from it :)

  • wow this is really sad.. im going to miss working on her.. I used to work on the independence back in 2001.. I worked in the buffet line and refilled the food... I actually lost my virginity on this ship.. I will never forget it.. It was a perfect first time too.. I used to sit on the rear deck all the way at the back of the ship and watch the sunset listening to UB40 lol.. God it was great times.. I still talk about it till this day.. She was a great ship.. Always remembered..

  • @beed3000 T.M.I.

  • I sailed longer on the Indy than any vessel to date, lots of memories there. Bos'n Mate & even Bos'n briefly.

  • its official ss independence is dead. she broke her back :(

  • April 5, 2010. name Sasuke Uchiha, username: Supertitanicfreak. I glad Independence is wreck like ss America. If Alang doesn't touch her, she'll doe like America did.

  • I had the honor of working on the Indy a few times(with EMS of Maui) she was an American Treasure, so was the Connie. I was part of the Connie's remodel in '88(Electrician). When we brought her back to Honolulu (in May '88) from Portland we went through a storm with 100ft seas(completely burying her bow in the troughs, hanging it out into space on the crests, 45% inclines)! She rode it like the Champ she was! The video and comments are like these two Ships--beautiful...I;m grateful to you all..

  • Apparently the beautiful Independence has recently broken in two after being aground near Alang. She had been anchored off shore for several months awaiting instructions to be beached for scrapping and she drifted ashore away from the breakers beach. The Indy will most likely remain on the spot where she beached.

  • @lasuvidaboy What is your source of information on this?

  • @VeritySkiff Maritime Matters site. Information was updated today (w/a grainy photo of the ship). She apparently has broken her back and is listing w/her bow down. She will be broken up on the spot as she cannot be towed.

  • the important thing now is to focus on saving the ssus.

  • Even in her sad state out there she still looks like a beauty! I hope.... before any serious effort to move her materialises......that a big storm blows in and floats her out to sea.....and sinks her. Then the Indy will defy the cutter's torch just like her sister Constitution! These old American liners are too good for those greedy bastards in Alang. The only proper way for these classics to die is at the bottom of the Ocean. So maybe the Indy will get her dignity afterall.

  • I just got this (Feb 8, 2010) from the Maritime Matters web site. She is not dead yet. I wish that it didn't have to end this way.

Reports from India claim PLATINUM II (ex INDEPENDENCE, SEA LUCK I, OCEANIC INDEPENDENCE, OCEANIC), aground and abandoned at Gopnath (some ten miles south of Alang), is beginning to suffer structural cracks and it has been said the ship will never be able to move from her current resting place.

  • yes, just read that this morning it looks like the worlds greed will not get her after all for now she will never move from her current spot, A sad end, but I feel it better then being slowly destroyed, however the sad part is she will now likely end up like the American Star.

Thanks for letting me know, Steve

  • @VeritySkiff Hie, Can you tell me were you found this news, I would like to read it.

  • @SSUnitedStateslife52 I read this on the Maritime Matters Web Site under shipping news. I would post the link, but I think it is being blocked by U Tube. Follow the link to "Broken Bits" on February 8, 2010.

  • still no word on her being beached its starting to make me wonder whats going on at that beach

  • Once again, thanks for the update. I know it is foolish of me, but I will not give up hope until I see a picture of her on the beach. I have been checking Maritime Matters daily for news. I have not read of the flooding from this supposed damage.

I have several pictures from when I was an engineer aboard her. Since it was in the 80's, they are not digital. Some day I will scan them and maybe, with some practice, put together a show like this one.

  • hey same with me theres always alittle hope left, sorry I had to reupload this my old account was deleted.
