I don't suppose this video is available on DVD from anywhere is it? I have Savall's "La Folia" album, where he plays the same variations (Track 6: Diferencias sobre las Folias), but I'd love to have this video, too.

WOAOW !!! This performance just tugged at my heart so much, I lost my breath !

Everything is assembled with inspired minutia : the almost human vocalizations of the Viola da gamba (masterfully nuanced by Jordi Savall, as if getting Bel Canto out of it), singing a duet with the harp, another heart-tugger like a very young soprano with an angel voice. The counterpoint is beautifully balanced by the vihuela (at least I think that's what it is ! whatever Rolf plays !) This one is particularly......

..elegant, as most instruments were during the Baroque era, and it has a rich tonality. But the complementary choice of percussions gives the entire ensemble the passion, the knock-out effect that Las Follias demand, with a simply beautiful synergy. In particular, the castañuelas underline the melodic line with the syncopation worthy of modern Flamenco, but really characteristic of period rythm, in its originality. One could imagine beautiful and gracious Arianna in a black dress at the King's..

....ball, dancing with the soul of this piece (Las Follias is a darling of mine to start with). I was so entranced I danced myself (I attend Baroque Dance classes) almost to exhaustion, in a pure joy I almost never experienced before !

No, folías comes from ancient Spanish meaning "craziness". It's like the Italian tarantelas, music that would "cure" you. "Sick" people would dance and turn until reaching a state of exhaustion and you would be considered cured (probably of some mental or "humoral" ailment).

The theme, of unknown origin, was already venerable by the time Corelli wrote his setting of "La Follia" (also known as "La folia" or "Les follies d'Espagne"). It had already been used as the basis of variation form works by composers a diverse as J.S. Bach, C.P.E. Bach, Marin Marais, Antonio Salieri, and Franz Liszt.
