@anoninus I understand what you are saying and sometimes feel its true but do remember that all muslims were hindus before. Rafi's ancestors were hindus as well. And a person may change their religion and convert but their blood is still hindu blood. All said and done, rafi was a great singer and so was kishore kumar and Mukesh. No replacement for these great singers.

This one is amongst the best lyrical songs of Hasrat Jaipuri. Though Filmfare award goes to other song of Bramchari, that too was also the great song from Shailendra, I still like this one more over the other.

Here I am not disputing the great song writer Shailendra's memorable songs, which comes to the top of the list, but to mention that Hasrat Jaipuri was equally good song writer too, and my choice of good songs in the movie.

Although the song was composed by Jaikishanji, Shankarji was so enthralled by the tune that he insisted on playing the piano for it. So they got another piano for him, and he played the piano. This is quite a leap. Tom Jones song was first released in 1968 as was the movie Brahmachari. U are implying that the producers of the movie rushed to write lyrics and music for the movie to match those of "why why Delilah". The piano is virtually absent from Tom Jones song and relies heavily on mariachi type instrumentation.

Wiithout running down the other great composers, I must say that Shankar-Jaikishan are at an entirely different level of greatness from the others.

Over the last 35 years, I have heard their songs 10,000+ times. Yet, far from tiring of them, I get even more enamoured of them with each fresh listening - unlike the other's compositions, which I begin to tire of after 300-400 times.

Even now, whole new dimensions emerge from SJ's songs. Is there no limit to their genius?

Only now, after listening to SJ's music over the decades, have I realised what it really means.

As a personal opinion, I would say that I have not seen even a fraction of such beauty, richness, and wonderful impact anywhere else or in anything else.

For a great song you need a great music directors. And Shankar Jaikishan were probably the greatest music directors the indian film industry has ever produced. No matter how good the singer, you need great music directors to produce compositions such as this. Look at all the hit Rafi / Shammi Kapoor songs -- the common thread is the presence of the one and only music duo of Shankar and Jaikishan. Jaikishan died at the age of 42- one of the saddest moments in Hindi music history.
