clearly Salazar's fault. But still Picket was slow in, even for being on the dirty track. It almost seems like Picket knew he wouldn't make it it front, backed up and ran out of space.
@TheColinChapman another irony...Piquet helped Salazar when the Chilean began to race in Europe in 1980. He later apologised to Salazar for his reaction
@hugodrax71 here comes the climax: the story goes that after the race the BMW mechanics inspected Piquet's engine and found that it was only a few laps from a capital failure. Piquet apologized to Salazar.
@TheColinChapman in fact Salazar did Piquet (and Brabham) a favour...can you imagine a BMW engine failing while their car was leading a grand prix in GERMANY!? the incident between the two drivers is funny but you can't help but feel sorry for Salazar...he clearly felt terrible about taking his friend out
@Dogman36 It basically means that a particular corner (or very occassionally a whole track) is not in keeping with the rest of the circuit, or is artificially slow and breaks up the flow of the track
Piquet took Salazar under his wing when he first broke into F1...according to Salazar this is why he ddn't fight back when Piquet went for him after the crash

Clive James says here that Piquet and Salazar "go to karate class together". Was that really true, I wonder, or just a bit of sarcasm?

the irony is - This WAS the highlight of Salazar's career.......

Most amazing thing about Clive James' commentary is that he did for the official FOM season reviews.

Tambay showed a lot of self-control, his clean style of driving and knew how to impose this marvelous Ferrari 126 C 2 on the track.

f1 needs commentators like him

A bit too sarcastic, perhaps?...

The commentator was well right about Salazar's highlight of his career because this incident is the only thing I know about him.

At this point of the year Pironi was leading and could have won were it not for his crash in practice. He broke both his legs.
But this was a classic year where many drivers could have won it.
Kimi should have done to lewis what Piquet did to Salazar.

He was right about Salazar! :)

of course he was , that idiot was a ´´running fuckin chicane´´ , hug from brasil

great way to honour pironi
if you look at the champ results theoretically tambay could have had a good chance at winning as he was half way behind ish after half a season
