Doesn't matter how much a normal person practices or studies, he will never be able to run 100m in less than 10 sec, understand all the math behind advanced quantum theory, play football as Cristiano Ronaldo or play the guitar like Paul Gilbert. For some things just practicing isn't enough, you need talent.

@claudiorebelo funny, you should start for interveiws of Paul gilbert. In most of them he says he dont have any natural talent, his first 2 years of playing guitar he said he thought you could only strum up, not down. He says influences ,believe in yourself, and practice a lot makes you a guitar player.

@blazejecar - that's a good way to look at it so that one does not get discouraged..however, you can oversimplify anything..NBA players..it's just putting a ball in a hoop. Ultramarathoners..no skill whatsoever really, everybody can run! If you can get as good as Paul Gilbert in a few years with just one hour a day of practice, you are truly the most gifted guitarist who has ever touched the face of the planet!

having played guitar for a long time now, I don't see Paul Gilbert as such a good guitarist as I did. His advantage is his abnormal speed but once you break it down to notes, its just ordinary tonal scales sped up to mega speeds. If you practise for like an hour every day you will get as good as he is in a few years. No complicated recipe...just music knowledge :)

Still, connecting the scales and chords into songs like this is pretty hard :)
