The Thing, Scarface, and The Fly were remakes that were made by people who took the overall premise of the originals and put their own spin on it, and ultimately made movies that are more memorable then the originals. The wicker man remake was made for the soul purpose of cashing in on a recognizable brand. They didn't care at all about how good the story, or the acting, was. That is why most remakes are lousy.

Howie was sacrificed in accordance with some Neopagan belief that the islanders' crops wouldn't fail. Notice how Sgt. Howie then turns that belief on them by stating, quite correctly, that if the harvest does fail after sacrificing him, they will then have to sacrifice Lord Summerisle himself (and notice the worried look on Mr. Lee's face!). It's a cautionary tale, as Robin Hardy points out.

This is a great film starring the superb (as usual) Edward Woodward and Christopher Lee. Despite being no gore, this film delivers suspense and a gut-churning and brutal ending. The only problem I had with it was the tendancy of the film to go off into "musical" territory. Still, it wasn't enough to not recommend the title.
