Yes Coyotes won't attack a human unless you intentionally wade into a large hunting pack. They are loners and only get together to hunt. That coyote was telling you to move along. More than likely she had pups somewhere near, or your dog was considered a threat to it's turf. Not part of the hunting pack.
We have had livestock for over 40 years and lots of coyotes in the vicinity. They have never bothered the llivestock, not even baby calves. I think people just like an excuse to shoot something.
@ashisthebest Coyotes would generally prefer to avoid humans than kill us. They aren't terribly large and usually go for smaller prey. In reality, this guy (girl?) was probably saying something like "get away!" because s/he thought the human and dog were some kind of threat. Think about it. You don't yell at someone you want to kill. You sneak up on them (presumably! I don't want to kill anyone myself!)! You yell to scare someone away!
my friends back yard is a massise 100acre plus field and in the middle of the night coyotes come out and bark and fight in the field. we tried using our highbeams on our car to see them but they are so far out there you just cant see them. but awesome to listen to at night and they always respnd back to whistling
most of us shoot them to control population and damage to cattle or livestock... if they get overpopulated they get risky and go after livestock... and they get mange and other nasty diseases... so a nice person would shoot them instead of letting them die from starvation or disease... nah just kiddin with ya... we do it it happens... thats a warning bark by the way... he didnt like what you were doing
Yeah shooting because population is too large for the territory is understandable. Just saying "idda shot him" is not so understandable. We do not have problems with the coyotes.
Not surprised it didn't like us around, I had my dog with me and wouldn't have been surprised if there was a den or something around. Hopefully there wasn't, as the field caught fire the next day and over 3,000 acres were burned.
There where a bunch of pups in my backyard so I said "hey" because they were barking and one growled at me ...

They are gorgeous dogs and their bark is very mysterious and may sound like some kinda paranormal creature when heard from miles away!!

@freakinrightman
why shoot an innocent animal? I mean sure a coyote would kill you if he/she would see you but still...
