You're mistaken. Sure, we do not predominantly use Byzantine melodies but (at the same time) this is the ONLY melody for this hymn (which is also sung in Slavonic).
@endofon2008 Byzantine music is music of the people from nowdays mediterranean states: Middle East (Lebanon, Syria, Egypt, Jordan, Turkey), Balkan (Greece, Serbia, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Albania..), so byzantine music is legacy from all of those nations. Byzantia WAS NOT a one-nation empire!
@geokonn Maybe he means the Republic of Macedonia which is a UN recognized state (we had Macedonian soldiers with us when I was stationed in Kuwait, in the buildup to the Iraq war). But, I am reiterating my wish that any arguments unrelated to the actual music be taken outside of this post (in private emails, for example).
@endofon2008: That is nonsense - of course the russian orthodox church does have byzantine orthodox chant. Russia received its faith from Byzanz so of course they have byzantine chant as also byzantine iconography and art.
But it is true that russian church music often westernised with polyphony and other elements foreign to byzantine chant.
@adamantis4657 Russian Church music dates back to Kyvian Rus'. At first glance Western and Russian music sound similar, but if you listen closely you will find differences.
Have you ever been to a Catholic mass? Or heard Traditional Catholic music? Russian music's more aggressive and dynamic than it's Latin counterpart and uses much more Flat and Sharp tones.
@endofon2008 of course that all orthodoxy has byzantine chant, and this video is so welcome to all orthodox christians, we are so proud to can hear arabic orthodox chant...Byzant and Greece is mother of all orthodox christians, god bless our Church and Patriarches...Best regards from SERBIA!!!!!!!!!!
весьма приятно услышать православных из разных стран спасибо огромное
