To everyone who's wondering: this song was about poverty. And when the lyricists tried to translate that to english, it just didn't sound right. Try singing "poverty" in place of "la misere" and you'll realize how awkward it sounds. So the decision was made to rearrange certain melodies around for different characters.

@thib8500 The only same thing about this song and "On My Own" is the Tune. But they are two different songs. Lyrics play an important part in making a song. Consider "FANTINE'S DEATH" and "ON MY OWN". Same tune, different songs. The same is true with Evita's "OH! WHAT A CIRCUS" and "DON'T CRY FOR ME ARGENTINA".

L'air de la misère deals with poverty (not only as a lack of money, but as the whole poverty) that concerns everyone of us, whereas on my own is just a love song. It doesn't mean that On my own is a bad song, it's just less strong. Maybe you don't understand the french lyrics, specially the chorus when she says that the outcasts are considered like bastards born in jail.

@dani888999 non dani, c'est pas la même chanson, fantine mère de Cosette chante" l'air de la misère" en tout début du premier acte, étant a la rue avec sa fille depuis peu et  Eponine fille des tenardiers et amoureuse de marius desepérément chante" mon histoire" dans l'acte trois a la suite de la chute des barricades. c'est quasi le même air mais les textes très poignant sont different.

I still wonder why Fantine's song of despair turned into Eponine's love song in the english version. Was it to give more weight to Eponine ?

@Poupix93 Actually in the English version, it's both Fantine's (Come to Me) and Eponine's (On My Own). At least, the main theme is the same. It's leitmotif, when the same musical theme is used multiple times to reflect the same dramatic theme. In this case Fantine is bemoaning how she'll never have a proper relationship with Cosette; similarly, Eponine re: Marius.

@Poupix93 Les Miserables is loaded with examples of leitmotif. Think of the police theme used in Valjean's arrest, Fantine's arrest, and Javert's entrance in Paris. There's a number of others if you listen carefully.

Love this!!!! I've always wanted to know what the French (original) version was like, but had no idea this was out there. Now, knowing only a very, very little French, I only wish I could interpret the lyrics. Clearly, they're nothing like the English version, and from what I can deduce, they are much more profound. If I may, didn't you forget a verse ? Just after "La misère lâche la bête en l'homme" (Misery reveals the beast in man), there is "et la mésange alors en chienne errante se transforme" [I am french and it took me a veeery long time to understand what she was singing xD] and it could be translated by "And so the tit turns into a stray dog".

Michael Javert, I love this song, and used to listen to it all the time, along with the rest of the soundtrack. While I was out of the house one day, my mom accidentally threw out my CDs of it. So I couldn't listen to it as much as i used to. I'm really glad that mildetryth put it up, because now i can enjoy Les Mis again, which is something I haven't been able to do in over 2 years.

"L'air de la misère" was sung by Fantine after selling her hair - despair of life itself.

"On My Own" is sung by Éponine after she sees Marius & Cosette together - unrequited love.

The lyrics are consequently quite different. Bear this in mind when comparing them.

I like the French version best - a harrowing song that haunts the mind after hearing it but once.
