excellent stuff. This film and the sex scene in the shallet had a profoud effect on me when I saw it for the first time. OK, I was just prob just 11 (in 1980) and I did not understand what it was all about - but I certainly knew I liked it and started to take an interest in the opposite sex thereafter.

I have This and Stardust on DVD now and watch them about 6 times a year. Difficult to explain just how big Essex was back then - bigger than Beckham and Robbie Williams rolled into one I'd say
The outside shop scenes were Jim lived were shot on the corner of Meaders Rd & StJohns Hill in Ryde, The shop is now closed down. Some scenes were shot in the Cafe in Cross St, Ryde, Cafe now gone If you look at the film closely you'l see snelgroves the decorating shop, also now closed down. When I worked as a plumber at the camp, We refitted those bathrooms, It didn't even occur to me they were the ones in the film. I'd love to have a walk round the camp again. It was two holiday camps then
nice detective work! i love this film....and fascinating to see the original locations.being a big movie buff, ive visited quite a few film locations on my travels, two of the best were for "jaws" and "schindlers list" i will check out the cafe location in shanklin,on my next visit,as my family live on the island,so i visit there quite a lot.thanks for posting it!
I went to England on a "study" trip when I was 17 -- back in 1973 -- and over that summer I remember seeing this movie in London back then -- along with Dirty Harry and a re-release of 2001 - A Space Odyssey.
That and making out with a couple of girls on the trip. Oh, and I remember Stonehenge and Blenheim and the Museum that had all of those full-sized trains.
I guess we must have done some studying too, at some point.

The beach scenes were filmed at Shanklin & one of the extra's in the film told me that the cafe scenes were done at the Paramount Milk Bar which is 74 High Street,Shanklin.Maclaine's Shop is on the corner of Meaders Rd, just up from Ryde St John St'n. Ryde Town Hall was used for the dance hall scenes & the Guitar Shop was also in Ryde. IOWI has done a cracking job on Puckpool & like all his videos they are the dog's bollx.Keep it up mate and I will see you on the beach one day with my collies!
i was told that the beach scene was filmed in Rhye..??sorry if thats spelt wrong, referance is that the peir blew down in the late 80,s..Wonder what the coffee shop is now??and the roller skating ring..Proberbly a Aldi or Tesco..
Thanks for the reply,my friend was so moved by this film he was a few years older than me,went to a holiday camp for the summer to recreate his own Jim Mclean, life so to speak,he came home after a week, said all he done was peel spuds all day was to knackered to go out at night..Ha Ha..Once again thanks for the posting, great stuff..Oh ...do you know where the rest of the film was on location..Thank you..
Strangely enough I don't think I've actually seen the film in thirty year! other than the clips on YouTube...I must get it on eBay..lol... someone told me that other parts of it were shot in Ryde St Johns Rd., I didn't live here then, and the beach in either TBTD or Stardust, I cant remember which, looks like Sandown or Shanklin...I must get hold of the film...ohh and some Brut...lol
Oh yes siree, a cult film...I was there in the cinema watching this...a fresh faced teenager stinking of Brut just like the rest of the audience...boys, girls...everyone wore Brut 33...and rightly so, lol.

Should have left a blue plaque on the wall outside, commemorating the place.
