My relationship to the Viking age is an ambivalent one. Its tall, valiant warriors were recruited even by such distant empires as Byzantium, where they formed the Varangian Guard.

Not even monasteries and defenseless monks were spared. Animals, and occasionally humans as well, were sacrificed in order to please the gods - and the extracted blood was spilled on the walls and the statues of the hov (the pagan temple or sacrificial area). This bloody practice, by the way, is the origin of the word blot. This was Norway before the coming of Christianity.

The most striking thing about this age, as it is portrayed in the sagas, is perhaps that there was no such thing as forgiveness (or at least very little of it). There was only revenge.

This song by Runrig is not, I think, an uncritical tribute to the Vikings. "Bearing burdens dark and deep", the lyrics say. This, to me, is a comment on the spiritual state of some of the warriors.

I never thought the lyrics had anything to do with vikings. runrig use to sing about scotland and scottish men and warriors. when I made this video I only thought the song and the movie fragments fitted well in atmosphere.

@EdmundSchilvold They sacrificed for natural reasons though, food were scarce in the north so the sacrifices of humans was "developed" to have good conscience about getting rid of people so the rest had enough food. The old religions were developing because they were told, not written. As soon as you write something down, it says as it's written. Example, the well loved Bible.

I added Tibet into the discussion, because it was a "popular" topic at that time and I thought by this analogy it would be more clear why Runrig's song are the way they are. No body denies, Tibetans live under bad circumstances - but it was just the same about the scots a few hundred years ago. And nowadays nobody cares for their fade anymore.

yes, the first time I heard this song was on a concert. It was the first song they were playing and I've never heard that album before. I was standing in the first row and it was fantastic. Never heard a record that could give me back the feeling of the song like it gave me back then...

You can get DNA tests in Scotland to see if you're mostly Pict or Viking or Gael etc.

The Vikings did wipe out the Picts in places but mostly they assimilated and inter-married. It's also true that Pictish tribes beat the Vikings in battles and contained their influence.

You are overestimating the "Viking" accomplishments in Scotland. First of all the 60% you talk about is not all of Scotland it is only the northern Isles that are connected to Norwegian males. The Norse rise and Scots fall of each population was gradual (hundreds of years) and had more to do with the Norse marring the Pictish than the destruction of the Scots.
