What alot of people don't know is that this tribe has many persons that married into creole/cajun families in Louisiana which is why so many looked black. The Choctaw people also saved many poor Cajuns & Creoles from the whites from up north during the civil war when the Union Army came to Louisiana and began killing us (francophones) and burning our land. When Columbus came to the Americas he thought he was in India. That should give you an indication of what Natives looked like before mixing with the Spanish and Europeans. Indians were very very dark at the time. Natives of Asian descent were more on Americas west coast, Navajo (descended from Tibetans, and Alaskan tribes).

Being of traceable Choctaw ancestry myself, I can say that there is a misconception of what a Native American Indian should look like. It depends on the tribe...my dad's side of the family is where my Choctaw roots are from and that side has almond eyes, roundish faces, short straight eye lashes, coarse yet, straight hair, a reddish/yellow complexions...etc...The people on this video do have obvious Indian roots; it's obvious.

Of course, not every black American has Indian ancestry, chances are, most blacks have more European roots due to the obvious history in America over the past 200 years and back. Many times, we'll hear someone say "My grandmother was Indian, that's where I get my fair skin..." But most blacks with Indian ancestry didn't get "lighter and fair-headed and freckled"...that is from another gene pool.

In this country Native ppl mixed with the ppl in their surroundings being it escaped slaves, Africans, Irish, Jews and other groups. South American Natives have more broader features similar 2 us.

May I say something, There is no such thing as a Full Blooded American Indian because they are actually a mixed race of people just like the Japanese people. So if the Indigenous people of Americas are Natives, then what leaves out the African people who have migrated out of Africa and gave birth to other races and if that the case, then they should be the original indigenous people not the American Indians.

What alot of people don't know is that this tribe has many persons that married into creole/cajun families in Louisiana which is why so many looked black. The Choctaw people also saved many poor Cajuns & Creoles from the whites from up north during the civil war when the Union Army came to Louisiana and began killing us (francophones) and burning our land. My family is Creole/Cajun and my Great Grandfather used to tell us the stories from when he was a boy about his father and the northerners.

Indians were very very dark at the time. Natives of Asian descent were more on Americas west coast, Navajo (descended from Tibetans, and Alaskan tribes).

My grandmother was Choctaw. It's good you have pictures and documentation. Real Indians are copper colored. The white ones you see now are government issued looking to lay claim to the riches of the real and true Mexicans which are Indians. Not these hybrid spanairds.

God bless you for that !! for years my grandmother and mother have told me that we are part Choctaw how my greatgrad was choctaw and married my greatgrand dad who was irish and had 32 kids but only 28 lived . They were in a town called Windfield Louisiana.... I just dont know how to start can you help us please

@AztecTripleAlliance Some native americans (5 civilized tribes) owned slaves, some natives were slaves. a lot of escaped slaves joined tribes for protection, some assimilated into tribes like Seminoles and Lumbees. in some parts of the Americas wealthy African Americans had slaves. John Horse and Osceola are examples of mixed notable Native Chiefs.

inspite of what i just said @redfootwalking i am not an advocate of claiming to be indian when i am not. i have indian ancestry, but i also have unmistakable african ancestry as well as some elements of european ancestry.. but in america i have the heritage of none of the above. that is the true importance of claiming ones heritage. not what i look like light skined dark skined etc. it is the land and the resources that are the true heritage of what one is. by the way great video.

Being of traceable Choctaw ancestry myself, I can say that there is a misconception of what a Native American Indian should look like. It depends on the tribe...my dad's side of the family is where my Choctaw roots are from and that side has almond eyes, roundish faces, short straight eye lashes, coarse yet, straight hair, a reddish/yellow complexions...etc...The people on this video do have obvious Indian roots; it's obvious.

@redfootwalking,,and I feel it's too bad there is so much denial out there. Of course, not every black American has Indian ancestry, chances are, most blacks have more European roots due to the obvious history in America over the past 200 years and back. Many times, we'll hear someone say "My grandmother was Indian, that's where I get my fair skin..." But most blacks with Indian ancestry didn't get "lighter and fair-headed and freckled"...that is from another gene pool.

@redfootwalking yeah, my guess would be that the majority of blacks who mixed with indians some 200 years ago didnt get lighter over the years because of this mixing, INDIANS WERENT ALL THAT LIGHT TO BEGIN WITH...many of them were people of color who were white-washed....same thing with the hawaiians, they were just as black as me very few of them still are, but when the asian migrated there and mixed with them, they were once again white-washed.

@redfootwalking those almond eyes and course straight hair are dead give aways of indian ancestry. what amazes me however coming from people rooted in the mississippi delta region is that so few african americans whether of native ancestry or not are aware that in the alabama, mississippi, tennessee and louisiana arkansas areas there was a lot of black indian interaction going on. many indians worked as sharecroppers for white folk. especially the chatta, chikasaw, bilouxi etc. some became black

@chulah12 u are right. the people in this video look to be mostly black. full blooded natives have reddish brown skin, straight black hair, and their noses are not broad but rather have an eagle like quality, with high cheekbones and thin frowning-type lips. they are very distinct . nothing to do with blacks.

@tonyuptown69 the olmec heads found in mexico are indigenous people, not black like the people in this video. it's such a shame what passes for a native in this country. and it goes the other way, these almost-white and white people living on reservations claiming to be native. being 1/16 or 1/64 native doesn't make you native. this country has relatively few full bloods now, mostly lakota and navajo living out west. the "indians" here in new york state are practically white.

I'm proud of my roots...all sides of my ancestry...however, I won't go as far to say I am going to lie about my roots. I am not full-blood and neither are most of my friends...I have friends who live as "white" and only want to claim their supposed roots when they feel like it, but, being Indian is more than saying you're Indian.

@coupleofbeers31 Well to be native is more of a cultural thing. Genetically Native ppls are associated with some Asians of Russia (Yakuts). In this country Native ppl mixed with the ppl in their surroundings being it escaped slaves, Africans, Irish, Jews and other groups. I'm "black" and I don't claim native ancestry although my maternal grandmother was Native or part Native (she was raised in the culture and spoke the language). South American Natives have more broader features similar 2 us.

@tonyuptown69 I'm sorry but i have to disagree. In one way, we are originally "African" but as far as Native Americans being of recent African ancestry, genetically that is not true. They hve some connection to the ppl of Siberia in Asia. All humans mixed in the beginning. Mexicans and many South Americans are a mix of Euro, indigenous, and African. Full African/Asians would look like the ppl of Madagascar. Many natives were killed off due European diseases.

So if the Indigenous people of Americas are Natives, then what leaves out the African people who have migrated out of Africa and gave birth to other races and if that the case, then they should be the original indigenous people not the American Indians.

LION, you don't have the facts straight. African-Natives or Black Indian peoples came about as a result of colonialism/post-colonialism times-- primarily from Indian wars, Indian removals, attempts of Natives and African survivals, etc. Despite continued attempts to kill off Natives in general, there ARE in fact, many full-bloods left. Most can be found in very remote, isolated communities, but also on/off reservations.
