  • @MiguelJT218 Hav u ever actually PLAYED this?? btw thank u 4 insulting our band...Castle North is the best middle school band in our region so srsly until u hav played this piece urself, shut ur face

  • 3:46-about 3:50 is so emotional!! my fav part 2 play (f horn...:3)

  • @890gg90 IKR!!! im in 8th grade so its kinda hard (plus the other horn player SUX) but i loooove playing it!! P.S. ur a horn player so...hav u ever heard of Arthur (Art) Adye?

  • Flute part was so intense. I remember 1:58 and 1:59 was such an intense part of the song! The slapstick part made it even more intense.

  • I played a rendition of this at my State level concert band competition, first chair F horn, we got a distinguished rating. but unfortunately got third place at state

  • @invidious77 the horn part in this is fun to play

  • Hey does anyone hear a hint of Vesuvius in this piece?

  • @TrAnMu YES

  • this was so so fun to play with school :D

    Percussion ftw!

  • omg i love vesuvius!!!

  • I'm sorry, but any good out of this song is overshadowed by one fact...

It is Vesuvius - not just a freaking rip-off, but it simply IS Vesuvius.

  • @JuilliardOrBust Having spoken to the composer when he workshopped it, I don't think that was his intention- though I personally think this is the greater of the two, I doubt he set out to write a different version of a Ticheli piece. The sources he cited as inspiration were more amusing than they were derivative.

That being said, it's pretty easy to accidentally or purposefully borrow, recompose or write variations on old themes. Look at John Williams.

  • My band is replacing the oboe solo with a flugle horn and I might be getting it! Eep (:

  • 3:47=<3

  • can someone say....Frank Ticheli??? *cough* Vesuvius

  • Played this at UNCG music camp in 2010, it was a fantastic song. Some parts are easy to play, but to really PLAY? Dang it's hard. It's a wonderfully written piece, and one of my favourites to this day. :)

  • @MiguelJT218 it's not always about what's easy...it's usually about the instrumentation if an advanced band decides to play this. Gives a fuller sound and range in the instruments..which creates better balance throughout the entire band. plus advanced bands have more advanced players which they can play the music musically but also with feeling and emotion

  • one of my director's former students wrote this =)

  • such a fun song to play! it was one of my favorites from band last year.... thanks for posting this great recording!

  • does this sound alot like vesuvius or is it just me

  • @alaman321 IT IS VESUVIUS

  • @alaman321 thats the same thing i posted on a vesuvius vid hahaha

  • wats with the cut off at the end?

  • i played this at band camp... awwww yeaaaa (aycock senior band at uncg 2010)

  • @stitchesinyourface you too?? doc is the best, lol. what'd you play?

  • @Faerie13Flute flute lol

  • out in australia..... melbourne

  • This piece sounds remarkably similar to Vesuvius by Frank Ticheli. Basically the same rhythms in the first half, with many of the same parts (slow, fast, fiery bass soli, etc.) Is anybody else noticing that?

  • Lemme settle this argument. I JUST did a clinic with Dr. Karrick. This is what we played, and it's a high school arrangement, although on the easy side.

  • i always hear tsubasa wo kudasai at 5:50.

  • im playing this atm, its pretty easy except for all the time changes...

im in percussion and the only prob is the parts are divided so 2 people get like bass drum on beat 1 through the whole piece, lol

  • @frieddimsims what school you playing for

  • i really like this song, it's very well arranged i think, and stop arguing about middle school and high school bands, im in high school and we played this, and we just got back from our trip to disney world. honestly, playing in school band is about having fun and enjoying making music, not bragging about how hard the piece is. Jesus Christ., i know it's the internet, but there's no need to be assholes about everything, goddam

  • Their is a concert arrangment and a High School Arrangment. Just like many other pieces. This seems to be the High School One. I'd be interested to see a Junior High play this version. Also hitting all the right notes which a junior school might be able to do, is not actually playing music. For most states, this is a class B High School Piece.

  • 4/4 7/8 2/4 8/8

    AAAAHHH it's crazy

  • i love playing this its soo cool.

    & i love black people.

too all of you down there

  • Can't wait for the summer

  • you guys know that this could sound like 100x better if you played it musically.. the notes of this song are easy, but playing it musically is what makes it hard.. one thing that really bugs me about this is the trumpets missed the first two notes.. and i honestly can't tell the difference between forte and piano on this. and for you guys who say its so easy, try making MUSIC..because if your playing music and doing it right, its not as easy as you guys claim it to be.. just sayin

  • @bcas2013 gurl i is black as hell and i got da soul, dat all i need baby ;3

  • i love this song im in middle school and we played this song

it was easy and we got 1st place in a compettion and i play the tuba part!

  • @juanvaldez100 which means almost nothing...

  • a song is what you make it.

I think this is well done.

Nothing is "easy" for a REAL player, just something they can try to make perfect faster

  • ok "MiguelJT218" my Wind Ensemble is the best in our district & WE'RE playing that song. Our professional group for my living area is also playing it at their spring concert. I have the English Horn/Oboe solo in this piece. You try playing it on one of the hardest instruments to learn THEN you can say it's easy. Cause it's not.

  • i looooove it ! i'm in an orchestra and we're playing it. And It is hard. Not like others said. It it. but it's realllly beautiful ! :)

  • Thank you!! This song is easy.. I have seen the music sheet and it's not hard.. People only think it's hard because of how it sounds.. The hardest thing about this peace is the mixed meters..

  • This song IS too easy. I thought it sounded cool at first, but it's almost embarassing when you look at the sheet music and see how.. uncomplicated it is.

  • there's nothing wrong with a simple song sounding magnificent. Think of something as simple as lux aeterna, a couple of intense intervals is all it takes to make it sound epic.

  • Wow.. Okay my brothers middle school band is playing this, it might not sound as good but they are playing this. The band director there really foucuses on making them sound like a high school band.. Here this is the band but they aren't playing this song their playing song for Lyndsay.. ANOTHER high school band piece okay sear Adam Stephens Middle School Band and look at song for Lyndsay.. This was last year when I was there.. And they just keep getting better..

  • When the imea honor band played this with mr. karrick we inserted a chorus line right after the first flute solo.

"And before I be a slave

I be buried in my grave

And go home to my lord, and be free."

    Beautiful.

  • This song is a little bit of a nightmare on French horn. But I still like the way it sounds :)

  • Sounds like a studio recording ;o

  • does it really matter?

  • im not in high school band. my high schools band dun play this piece either. seeing that you're so confident, plz post a performance of your brother's middle school band playing this song. i look forward to it.

  • @pa5436 Yeah, just because they're playing the song doesn't mean it won't be dirty... yeah. A song is nothing if it's not clean.

  • @MiguelJT218 my school symphonic band plays pieces like Two Symphonic Movements by Nehlybel, yet you don't see me complaining about the music, do you? easy or not, it's a perfectly decent (and nice-sounding) piece, and that's what matters most.

  • @MiguelJT218

I doubt very seriously that a middle school band is playing this. Karrick himself was the guest conductor for the Indiana Music Educators Association All State Honor Band and we played this piece. It is very difficult. I assure you, and if they are playing it, please, by all means post a video response of them doing so. I'd love to see a middle school's take on what some of Indiana's best high school musicians played not even a month ago.

  • Clearly you've never heard professional orchestra's play childrens music, and make it sound amazing. Music is music my friend, it doesn't need to be hard to be good. The less difficult it is, the more one can focus on the finer aspects, and make it sound incredible

  • @MiguelJT218 what makes this piece so easy?

  • a middle school band could play this song, but the slow sections would sound awful.

Miguel, my wind ensemble played both, and pursuit isn't even a hard piece...it requires little concentration on intonation, any idiot can play any rhythm if they practice it, but it takes real talent to play a song like this expressively

  • @MiguelJT218 WINDS???? you really dont need winds its all about percussion and brass lol

  • @jsutchillin

    I resent that!

  • @MiguelJT218 you seem like a real douche

  • so i would just like to say this piece may seem "easy" to you, but theres a difference between being able to just play a song and to make it music. and honestly this song is much prettier and more intense than "pursuit" by conaway. there are more than just notes and rhythms that go into a song, and thats what makes a band good. i am in a band where we take much pride in our musicality and we played this song and it rocked. so just because a jh can play this most definitly does NOT make them good

  • @musiCrazy21 thank you!!

  • @MiguelJT218 Ha middle schoolers can't handle 7/8

  • @MiguelJT218 is it so easy if you play it with heart..and play it musically?

  • @MiguelJT218 you sound retarted and arrogant.

  • @MiguelJT218 No song is exactly easy. There's always room for improvement. Always. Every truely good musician knows this. And this song is still amazing either way. Just appreciate it.

  • @MiguelJT218 The whole point of music is to entertain and it sounds bloody good

  • @MiguelJT218 ATTENTION:

    You're a moron.

  • @MiguelJT218 Who cares if it's easy or not? It's a great song, dumbass.

  • @MiguelJT218 Wow you are just full of stupid. Like so much it might be a disease to be as stupid as you are. I'm not going to sit here and pour my heart and soul into a response lecturing you on why you are stupid but just know you are soo stupid. So Stupid. So Stupid.

  • Whoo! My school just played this in a contest. I just got home from it. It's amazing! I love how it sounds. :3

    I played Saxophone 2, btw (freshmen don't get Saxophone 1 =( ).

  • kawnbread

  • Me and my niggers used to sing this song around the bonfire when we were freezin' our asses off cause we was runnin' from Massuh and his dogs. Gurl we was skurt.

  • @drnigra I love you. Soooooo much. Also, I go to school with the man who composed this... Ugh...

  • Awesome

  • my school's band is doing and I'm playing Clarinet atleast 3rd clarinet.

  • my school is playing this and i play tuba

  • gUrL WH4N H4RR13T WUZ H3LP1N M3 3SC4P3, 1 L1ST3N3D 2 D1S

  • LMFAO

  • well it issss a song about slavery, hence the name "They shall run and be free." y do people get so worked up over a word. ps im a cracka, do u see me flipping shit?

  • It's about the underground railroad.

  • plz don't use that word here. you know what i mean. thx

  • @TheGilbert2011 NIGGER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Playing this for District Contest. Second Clarinet and I rock it.

  • This piece kind of sounds like something you'd hear from a Final Fantasy game.

    So amazing though!

  • wow i LOVE this piece!

karrick was once a student of my current director, North, and we are so proud to be taking this song to competition. :))

  • Great performance !

.....but does anyone get a video on it, or just audio? (It helps me practice with the piece if I can watch the conductor.)

  • WOW, haha. I'm in eighth grade and my school band is playing this.

  • at 4:12 I believe there is suppose to be a triangle with the flute after he breaths

  • I played this at tri state as well, I'm glad I got to find a recording on here show I can show my friends this b.s piece.

My school marched visuves my freshman year

  • Definitely my favorite Tri-State song-- Dr. Kerrick was so passionate! lol at it being "inspired by Ticheli"

  • i still can't believe the depth of this song!

  • I got to play this at Tri-State. It was amazing :)

  • I just got to perform this piece in a band directed by Dr. Karrick himself. It was incredible.

  • AWESOME SONG, playing this in band
