Sometimes we forget that all we really wanted was to be happy. I'm glad this documentary was made and while it did make me and many others cry, at least we'll know that after we finish we can always start over. Smiling. :)
I admit, I'm sometimes just bitter with the world and throw my angst out into the internet. It's easy and selfish to feel rotten...and unfortunately, it takes hard work to be happy. I'm glad I watched this video. In 2012, I hope to start it off as a new person. Good luck to everyone else!
This guy is awesome, his teaching and style of teaching is something we all can learn from. I believe we, as a parent, should learn from this. If you think about it, it is our responsibility to teach our children about empathy, compassion and friendship. Lets not just leave it to the teachers, we can become the educators to our kids. Talk to them and open their mind to this world of empathy, compassion and friendship.
Thank you for posting this video. I felt so many emotions watching this, and a deep respect for this teacher. I remember in primary school we had something called 'circle time' or 'golden time' similar to the letters, but it felt so forced that there was no real sharing or emotion there. These kids have such a wonderful classroom environment.
@PMID85 Not being rude but whether this is the teachings of Jesus Christ is irrelevant b/c I'm assuming that most of Japan is secular in their own beliefs and that I'm betting the teacher and more so the children seen in this video do not know the teachings of Jesus or Christianity. The fact of what you have stated believes me more so that Christianity continues to claim such beliefs as their own and that it is "The truth, the life, ,and the way."
Watching all 5 of these has re-affirmed my desires to pursue a career in education. For anything thinking the same, it's pretty much up to people like us to fix, improve, and innovate in our broken education systems.
Mr. Kanamori's methods somewhat remind me of my current AVID teacher's methods. Although they were only short term projects, we came together as a class and told each other about our lives, the painful parts and the happy parts. We also do this at an annual school event called Unity Day. I am so happy for these children, that they have been able to learn this kind of wisdom and empathy so early on in life.
I just watched all 5 videos - cried in some. It seems to me that we are all wise because we all have life experiences but it is when we feel accepted, that we can truly feel safe to be show who we are and share our wisdom. My coachees and students of English have taught me, and continue to remind me, that what most motivates them is when I am genuine - being honest and caring as a person, and competent and inspiring as a teacher. May all learners have a person like Mr.Kanamori in their lives.
I watched the whole thing. In my mind I knew that how this guy is teaching is how its suppose to be done. Teaching wisdom especially at the kids age. Your life is on Record when your born, it's up to u to rewind memories that can help your presence.
This is a true teacher. As a future educator, I hope I can be half as good as this guy. I've had so many horrible teachers throughout my education, but the teachers who really impacted me stay in my mind forever. I have no doubt that these kids will always remember this teacher :)
What is this teacher's actual subject? I am currently majoring in elementary education and I don't like that I have to do all this math, math is not my favorite subject. I am looking for a subject where I can incorporate things like compassion, forgiveness, and love. Things that can really help these children in the World! :)
tell me about it! the national curriculum in UK doesnt leave us with anyscope to teach what you jus mentioned, ur own departmental staff will fall on you like an ocean if they hear you teaching them anythin besides ur own subject. ucan either be really wise and blend it in ur lesson plans about 10mins before or after OR just leave it for ur FORM class but then sooo many miss out on this vital speech
I love the combination of life skills, being real, dealing with what is real, and the creative and natural responses of children being nurtured, cultivated in ways that are life lessons that become a part of them. Dealing with death and cruelty that occurs in the life of children in a way that is real, that the children discover can be exposed in a way that allows healing, an experience of connection and compassion that is the bonding of our interrelatedness is an amazing lesson. Like to see f/u
Teachers are almost often tellers!...they dont teach they tell, like advise, its free so useless. This man works deep within empathy, what a gift and healing skill. this man will have impacted on these children for ever
So impressed. What an incredible gift this class received, what beauty. May they carry it all out into society and become such shining examples like their teacher! I am deeply touched. Thank you, Mr. Kanamori.
People seem to believe that all children are brats, uneducated and most of all people think that children don't understand. We do. Since I was four years old I remember all the deep thinking I did about my parents divorce. Althought we obviously do not behave like we understand, just because of Mifuyu's fears. Being different. Behind every child, wheter they're quiet or loud, there's a deep understanding. These kids teacher merely sparked up the feeling that it's ok to be emotional and caring.
This is true. Just look at Tsubasa's face when he came in. people said he looked okay, he looked okay but obviously he was feeling pain but was trying to hold it back. this is a prime example of why you can't judge people from their looks, age, background or whatever.I had a girl who thought I was souless or something for not reacting when my parent passed on but the truth wasn't like that at all. I shouldn't have to explain why either
this is like heaven on earth. To think that we in the west worship footballers and popstars when really people like this deserve fame and happiness. So inspiring. Thanks Mr Kanamori
What stood out to me is that this teacher was able to physical connect with his students and it wasnt "creepy or wrong" it was compansionate and right.
I know there are adults out there who shouldnt be near children but if we could find ways to pat a kid on the head or give them a hug when the need it WITHOUT being fearful of arrest or being charged....this would be a better world
@thevaillants1 Don't worry...that kind of over-exaggerated paranoia fear of adults touching children is found only in North America. The world is not like that.
@thevaillants1 I could not agree more with this comment. My sister is a teacher and cannot give the 5 year old children who need a pat on the shoulder when they've fallen down or tie their laces. She is not even supposed to put on sun cream for them for a summer day trip - but sometimes practically has to take over! Health and safety gone mad.
We could be teaching this in our schools and we don't . Conflict resolution, Non violent communication. We have forgotten how to communicate to each other face to face. Maybe that is why there is so much bullying and hoodlums in classes today.
Wisdom is what schools should teach students, more important than knowledge is wisdom. A lot of PhDs out there don't have the wisdom of these 10 year-old
These kids are my age right now, we grew up at the same time. I can say without a doubt that no one I knew at that age was this mature,or had this close a bond with anyone else. Including myself.
Pray for the children of Japan, that they may be children again from the devastation they now face.Pray for great teachers like the wonderful man in this film ...
This is breathtakingly beautiful. The amount of compassion these children have for each other and the respect they have for the teacher -- North America really needs teacher like this wonderful man.
These Kids show a type of love and caring that so rarely adults do.
I cannot find the right words to express my joy at being fortunate enough to be able to see this, and knowing someone like this exists in the world, and my sorrow in knowing that he is unique and not the norm. Imagine a world in which children are treated this way at schools everywhere, all the time! I imagine it to be a most beautiful, loving place. God bless you, Mr. Kanamori!
I loved this documentary! Someone needs to offer Mr. Kanamori a job teaching other teachers how to do just what he does, eventually the world will become a better place. I know the kids that were lucky to have had him as their teacher will never forget him.
If more teachers don't start popping up like him, I'll have to take it into consideration myself to become one---inspired by this guy right here; Mr. Kanamori. God bless him and those little children. For someone as cynical as me, I can't even deny how touching I found this. I was suprised at the maturity of these children, and I find it a bit sad that when I talk to/hear other adults, I feel like I'm talking/listening to a child. Reversed?
I believe this documentary could help change the learning world, even if it's just a little. If you agree, post 1 of these 5 videos on facebook or any other website so it can touch the hearts of many others like ourselves.
Everyone can learn from the teacher and the children. This made me cry so much lol
There were so many things in this school that would be an absolute no-no in a western school... It sucks how some children are missing out in this kind of life learning opportunity.
Watching this in full reminds me how much humanity exists within all school systems, including Japanese, and how much of that is glossed over in materials teaching others about/giving the viewer a glance into their society
@sayonara69696 They as individuals are probably far better balanced, but coming into this sick world it must be very hard for them to adjust. Hopefully they are directing energies to changing the direction in which we are headed. Look at Fukushima. :(
Stunning doco - and much food for thought about how we can be better teachers. Joel, thanks for sending me the link - it makes me think that we could introduce a similar "letters" programme at Savong's School in Cambodia.
I learned, I cried, I hoped, and I wished, a lot of things are going into my heart right now. Thanks and thanks for the person who shared this video!!
I've heard that it is customary in Japan for the monks integrate themselves back in the general society after they've "gained" enlightenment. Therefore a person who has spent a great deal of his/her life in a monastery and comes back and picks up where he left is considered a success.
I have a feeling that Mr. Kanamori is a former monk. A real inspiration anyway.
FYI An excerpt from the producer’s (Mr. Kaetsu) comments;
“There were many more great stories, but we had to cut some scenes that I wanted to show very much. Kanamori class students, the heroes of the program, must have more great memories in their hearts than I could see. My own benefit was that through this coverage, I was able to experience the rich and valued moments that only that school can provide.”
This might have been the best thing I have ever seen. Those kids are so lucky that they had him as a teacher. I cried several times watching this, and I learned alot.
Awesome. Amazing documentary. Towards the end of this video, I almost cried. Thank you for posting the videos. Much appreciated. Well wishes to the children of Japan.
If teachers were all like the one in this documentary....peace, plus possibilities of keeping it and creating the Art of Living a "Happy" Life available to everyone.
Thank you for the upload! I really enjoyed the documentary. People in the U.S should watch these videos and realize what life is about! Keep your head up and heart lit on people!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
These children are wise beyond their years, it was so touching to see what they were capable of. It seems like so many don't get these lessons at any point in their life.
The teacher was a true inspiration, there needs to be more Kanamori's in the world.
Just beautiful! Amazing film, Thumbs up to CBC for making this film, please follow up Kanamori and his kids in the future. Please, film institutes around the world, make sure to give funding to make another film about Kanamori and his kids, and make sure to distribute the film world wide =D Im sure a lot of distributors would love that opportunity without making any money of it =D Right people =D
This is one of the best documentary I have seen. Its impressive, motivating, HAPPY, realistic and most of all, a learning experience that will last a life time for all those children. THANK YOU TEACHER For all you've DONE!!!! ( Mr. Kanamori) GOD BLESS YOU! If only teachers can be like you here in America! I can promise you, our children will absolutely be better people.
Wonderful Thankyou so much

All I had in Malaysia were Malay teachers who imparted racism and hatred.

@sayonara69696 one of them become priminister. one of them become a pop star. one of them cures cancer. that would be amazing.

I would pay $10K a year to send my future children to this school if they had this teacher all throughout their education.

Stunning doco - and much food for thought about how we can be better teachers. Joel, thanks for sending me the link - it makes me think that we could introduce a similar "letters" programme at Savong's School in Cambodia.

FYI An excerpt from the producer’s (Mr. Kaetsu) comments;
“There were many more great stories, but we had to cut some scenes that I wanted to show very much. Kanamori class students, the heroes of the program, must have more great memories in their hearts than I could see. My own benefit was that through this coverage, I was able to experience the rich and valued moments that only that school can provide.”
Great vid!

These children are wise beyond their years, it was so touching to see what they were capable of. It seems like so many don't get these lessons at any point in their life.
The teacher was a true inspiration, there needs to be more Kanamori's in the world.
Thank you for this documentary!

THANK YOU TEACHER For all you've DONE!!!! ( Mr. Kanamori) GOD BLESS YOU! If only teachers can be like you here in America! I can promise you, our children will absolutely be better people.
