GM should not receive another dime of bailout money, not until they pay their workers a fair wage. GM is in the toilet because of their inmoral and greedy business practices. Have we not learned our lesson of worker exploitation from the Industrial Revolution. Government should stop giving GM tax breaks just so they can send jobs overseas. This was the biggest mistake of Bush and Obama presidencies. Pope Leo XIII addressed this problem in the encyclical Rerum Novarum.

I mean seriously, they're tied im quality with Toyota and they have the most 5 star ratings than any other manufacturer (they own Volvo and use some of their cars chassis).

The Goverment did a 3 year bailout for Amtrac over 40 years ago. Every year since then the Goverment bailed the out. It's up in the 10's of billons per year. GM had poor corporate governance until Obama fired Wagoner. GM tarnished, corroded, essentially destroyed its reputation for quality over decades. It did so intentionally. Blame the UAW for GM's bankruptcy. The workers can only assemble the cars that management has chosen.
The workers can only build cars the management chosses is right. but the UAW was too greedy and demanded more than the job was worth, which made wages and benifits too high, which made financial liabilities too high, which made production costs too high, which made GM less competitive, which hurt GM's R&D, which ultimately sank GM.

Well, they do make some quality products, but thanks to CAFE standards, they're losing money on those. Get rid of unfair regulation, get rid of union labor, and GM could be turning over a pretty fair profit right now. Maybe, without the environmental regulations, they'd even have the Spark ready for sale in 2010 like they originally planned when they were turning a good profit.

The point is when the free decides a product is inferior, it rewards the superior product in profits. This bail out business is going against the very concept of letting the free market decide. I hear the japanese plants in america are doing great. They also provide Americans with a lot of jobs.
This is true, but a major part of the reason is that GM has to build a car in the same price range as a Japanese car if they want to be competitive, but they have to do it while spending more on labor, and losing money in fines for people not wanting their little, cheap, efficient cars, and instead going for the trucks and SUVs. Another significant part is how dealerships work. A friend of mine works at a Subaru dealership, and selling as few cars as many GM dealerships is a bad month for him.

The government should not be in the business of bailing private companies out. Companies such as GM should be allowed to go down if they are no longer able to compete in a free market economy against the creme de la creme of international competition, even if jobs are lost in the process.

Personally, I think the free market should be allowed to judge on this issue and in that regard. Clearly, requiring companies to hire women or making it illegal to discriminate against women when hiring new people is not in the best financial interest of the company for obvious reasons.

I truly wish GM was not in trouble but that ship sailed long ago. Now, in hindsight, we all see that it would have been best for them to file bankruptcy 6 months ago (before the bailouts). That would have been a normal bankruptcy. What we have instead is a bizarro bankruptcy where the UAW is rewarded for dragging the company down and the bond holders get kicked to the curb. This is one I can't blame on Obummer. George Bush actually initiated this whole scenario. He gave GM the first bailout.

SUV's vs. mpgs is irrelevent. GM best interest is selling what ppl want. its not about understanding god, thats about knowing ppl. but, too much of GMs assets were obligated to the UAW and left GM unable to invest in flexable production to quickly make the cars the ppl want. so when sales declined, UAW and other liabilites stayed the same= bankrupt.

This how the world really works. GM, the american version of BL builds cars that don't last the first trip down the driveway. Competition builds vastly superior products. Honda, Toyota, Nissan, etc. etc. etc. and etc.

GM had poor corporate governance until Obama fired Wagoner. GM tarnished, corroded, essentially destroyed its reputation for quality over decades. It did so intentionally. Blame the UAW for GM's bankruptcy. The workers can only assemble the cars that management has chosen.

The workers can only build cars the management chosses is right. but the UAW was too greedy and demanded more than the job was worth, which made wages and benifits too high, which made financial liabilities too high, which made production costs too high, which made GM less competitive, which hurt GM's R&D, which ultimately sank GM.
BO was wrong to fire and make demands, thats the job of the shareholders. BO steped on a slippry slope; debit and equity holders got screwed..... who is next?

Well, they do make some quality products, but thanks to CAFE standards, they're losing money on those. Get rid of unfair regulation, get rid of union labor, and GM could be turning over a pretty fair profit right now. Maybe, without the environmental regulations, they'd even have the Spark ready for sale in 2010 like they originally planned when they were turning a good profit.

This is true, but a major part of the reason is that GM has to build a car in the same price range as a Japanese car if they want to be competitive, but they have to do it while spending more on labor, and losing money in fines for people not wanting their little, cheap, efficient cars, and instead going for the trucks and SUVs. Another significant part is how dealerships work. A friend of mine works at a Subaru dealership, and selling as few cars as many GM dealerships is a bad month for him.

But Amtrak loses money every year In the early 70s when Amtrak was founded, Congress voted for and approved $300 million to run it.

Personally, I think the free market should be allowed to judge on this issue and in that regard. Clearly, requiring companies to hire women or making it illegal to discriminate against women when hiring new people is not in the best financial interest of the company for obvious reasons.

google "obama pull out troops election". It's what I remembered and I confirmed it.
He wanted to pull out combat troops by 2010...it's still 2009...I think. But let me be clear that a full troop pull out won't happen. Iraq is too volatile and without u.s. troops there'll probably be a power grab. Though I do believe there will be a huge troop reduction.
In short, you either have short term memory loss or are from the future. Stop getting your news from the local bar at closing time.

I truly wish GM was not in trouble but that ship sailed long ago. Now, in hindsight, we all see that it would have been best for them to file bankruptcy 6 months ago (before the bailouts). That would have been a normal bankruptcy. What we have instead is a bizarro bankruptcy where the UAW is rewarded for dragging the company down and the bond holders get kicked to the curb. This is one I can't blame on Obummer. George Bush actually initiated this whole scenario. He gave GM the first bailout.

Obama is nowhere near a center view. One of his mentors as a young man was a communist, he even wrote about him in his book. America is a center right country so what he can get pushed through may not be far left yet, although I consider the gov owning 60% of the largest corp in the country a little more than left of center.
We own GM in the worst of times, where do you think this is going to lead? Protectionism is coming next, maybe early next year? Shortages after that and DD inflation.

You also have to take into consideration that most of us following HTWW's are on the right and so Obama's leftist policies are offensive to us. We are also afraid of high inflation and the collapse of our economy. We have the bad parts of soc and cap, without the good parts of either with this mix.

As long as its Obama's own money that he spent on his date(which he has earned as a Senator, lawyer, etc.) then he's free to spend it however he pleases.
His money that he earned is his private property, and it should be up to him as to how to spend it, not subject to the consent of the people.
I suppose some can see it as in bad taste, and I know someone will pull the "taxpayer salary" card, but that's a bogus argument.We shouldn't tell cops and other public servants how to spend their money.
